A discussion of how the Washington and Lee University community has been impacted by the Board of Trustees decision to retain the name, and the movement to rename and remove Confederate monument and namesakes nationally.
In the summer of 2021, the Trustees of Washington and Lee University voted to retain the name of the institution. Throughout the previous year, many Confederate monuments were removed, and the names of other institutions throughout Virginia and the rest of the south were changed. In addition, an overwhelming majority of the faculty voted in support of a name change, and various groups of students circulated petitions and engaged in protest of the name. Although changing the name was supported by a majority of all members of the community, the Trustee’s statement focused on the impact of their decision on the descendants of the enslaved on campus, and in the aftermath of the decision some Black members of the Washington and Lee community faced backlash for their support of changing the name and their public comments on the decision. On this episode of Getting Common hosted by Professor Carliss Chatman, Associate Professor at Washington and Lee University School of Law, Rev. Robert W. Lee, IV (https://www.roblee4.com/), Ty Seidule (www.tyseidule.com), Professors Nneka Dennie and Brandon Hasbrouck, and Washington and Lee Law alumna Adenike Miles-Sorinmade will discuss the efforts to change the name, the aftermath of the Trustee decision, and the meaning of naming and monuments. The members of the Washington and Lee community will discuss how they have been personally impacted by the debate and the decision. Rev. Lee and Ty Seidule will share how they have come to their current position on Robert E. Lee. https://www.voiceamerica.com/show/4043
