The Roller Coaster Reality of Complex Organizational Transformations By Maureen Metcalf Feb22

The Roller Coaster Reality of Complex Organizational Transformations By Maureen Metcalf...

This blog is a companion to the interview with Mike Sayre and Dr. Dale Meyerrose on VoiceAmerica “Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations” on February 7, 2017, Focusing on the roller-coaster reality of complex change. As we listen to leaders talk about their transformation success – it sounds as if they created a plan, executed on the plan and declared victory. In working with large complex change, this is rarely true. Things happen that derail the project, such as acquisitions, divestitures, and market changes. The test of a successful leader is how he or she responds to the changes that happen, pivots to revise the strategy for success, and implements the revised strategy. The role of organizations is to deliver results aligned with their mission. In a complex and ever changing environment, organizations must change to keep pace. Scott came into an organization that was in the process of making significant change. His job was to lead the portfolio of transformation initiatives and ensure the business continued to run effectively. This role meant that he needed a strong understanding of the current organizational operations, the direction of the change and the capacity to change. Given the rate of change we are seeing across the business landscape, rarely do I see organizations that aren’t making multiple concurrent changes. I expect that this trend will continue well beyond my career. Organizations now need to adopt the ability to change as a core competency if they are to thrive long term. Many leaders believe they are effective at change because they have led a few initiatives. As the bar increases, it is incumbent on you as a leader to continually hone this skill of leading organizational transformation, which means knowing how to both update yourself as a leader...

Our Oceans, Our Future: a conversation with Fabien Cousteau by Catherine Calarco Feb21

Our Oceans, Our Future: a conversation with Fabien Cousteau by Catherine Calarco...

Educate + Empower + Restore. It is a great honor to be joined by Fabien Cousteau to discuss the Ocean Learning Center (OLC) and the experience of living 31 Days underwater. Our dynamic conversation will provide unique insights and review amazing adventures of the Cousteau family. Following his grandfather’s words, “People protect what they love, they love what they understand and they understand what they are taught.” – Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the mission of the OLC is to raise awareness, educate, and inform all citizens of the world of ways to protect and preserve the planet’s waters and endangered marine habitats and marine life. Through knowledge and innovative technologies regarding ocean preservation, the team at OLC collaborate with partners to develop educational programs and activities in aquatic conservation, restoration, and marine projects dedicated to protecting the Earth’s waters and its inhabitants for the future of our next generation. The Oceans provide our planet with air, water, and food. We share an unbounded curiosity to learn about our environment and life.   As an Aquanaut, Fabien lived under water for 31days.   His experience demonstrated the uniqueness of our planet and the joy of being part of the ocean environment.   “”Ninety-nine percent of our livings space is the ocean”   The oceans hold a huge amount of secrets and amazing new discoveries.   New technology now makes it possible for us to explore it like never before.  At the same time, the ocean environment is threatened with islands of plastic (gyres), the loss of coral reefs due to bleaching and acidification that threatens the entire planet itself.  Dynamics of climate change impacts the ocean and us on land.  Technology can save the ocean but it will take people to make it happen.   How can...

Spirituality is Authentic to Ancient Western Civilization with Linda Johnsen By Dr. Paula Joyce Feb17

Spirituality is Authentic to Ancient Western Civilization with Linda Johnsen By Dr. Paula Joyce...

A constant theme in my radio show has been Unity: we are all One, we are all connected, we are more alike than we are different. What we don’t know about the history of our Western civilization puts an exclamation point on this theme. We hear a lot about the different beliefs stemming from Western and Eastern thought and religion. As it turns out, we haven’t been taught the whole truth. The Greek philosophers, who are considered to be the founders of Western civilization and scientific thought, were also masters of spiritual wisdom. They traveled to India and Egypt to study and brought back spiritual practices like meditation and beliefs including karma, reincarnation and spiritual transcendence. Pythagoras remembered his past lives, founded a successful ashram in Italy in 600 BCE and his followers strove for enlightenment. Maybe there is not a great divide between the East and West as we have been led to believe. Please join me Thursday to learn more about mysticism in ancient Greece. More...

Teams that Cross The Highest Bar Not The Lowest Common Denominator By Maureen Metcalf Feb15

Teams that Cross The Highest Bar Not The Lowest Common Denominator By Maureen Metcalf...

This blog is drawn from a paper published by Jim Ritchie-Dunham & Maureen Metcalf, Co-hosting: Creating Optimal Experience for Team Interactions, Integral Leadership Review, November 2016. Jim and Maureen also recorded a Voice America Interview airing on February 14, 2017. Christopher, the CEO, walked into a planning session with the intent of getting his full team on the same page for how to move key initiatives forward for the upcoming year. His leaders were all in alignment on the core purpose of the organization and how to accomplish it. During the discussion, everyone gave unbiased input intended to move the organization forward irrespective of personal interest. Christopher was highly skilled at understanding the point of view of all participants and synthesizing the various points of view of his trusted leaders to create solutions everyone could support. Does this scenario describe your normal business meetings? How is it different? We would like to explore the idea that groups can leverage the skills of individuals across five key perspectives and create an environment in which each participant operates at his greatest level of contribution. We call this the alchemy of co-hosting, whereby the co-host, in conjunction with the participants, invokes a very different mindset and process for the team to function. The Challenge “Less than one-third of U.S. employees have been engaged in their jobs and workplaces [since 2000]. According to Gallup Daily tracking, 32% of employees in the U.S. are engaged — meaning they are involved in, enthusiastic about and committed to their work and workplace. Worldwide, only 13% of employees working for an organization are engaged.” – Gallup Much of our work is done within teams comprised of many highly effective and highly compensated people. We have found that these teams often function at...

Anybody’s Dog By Ariel & Shya Kane Feb14

Anybody’s Dog By Ariel & Shya Kane...

Anybody’s Dog – By Shya Kane An excerpt from How to Have A Match Made in Heaven: A Transformational Approach to Dating, Relating and Marriage As my wife Ariel and I boarded a small airplane in Ft. Lauderdale bound for Eleuthera in the Bahamas, I noticed the other passengers who would be flying with us. Some seemed to be Bahamians returning from shopping trips, while others were retirees. There was a family with two small children and I enjoyed watching their young boy animate his Spiderman action figure, jumping it from his sister’s shoulder, flying it from seat to seat. I also noticed a man in his mid–30s talking loudly to his wife. Dressed in casual attire, they were obviously going on vacation. Since there was only one seat on each side of the aisle, Ariel and I sat across from each other and this couple sat in front of us. The plane prepared for take–off and I watched Ariel gaze out her window, fascinated by the view from her little portal into the world. As I turned to look out of my window, I saw that the man who had been so loud was now fidgeting in his seat while his wife did a crossword puzzle. As we sat on the tarmac before take–off, I heard him say, “Joan, this flight is going to be just like our honeymoon. Look at this plane—it’s so small.” Immediately that got her attention. She anxiously said, “Do you really think so, Ted?” “Oh yes, the ride will be exactly the same—just as rough, maybe even rougher.” She put down her pencil and grabbed his hand. I could only imagine what the airplane ride was like after they got married but this one was actually smooth and...

When It is Dark, Turn to the Light By Marni...

Some days it is harder for me to make the “turn” to the light than others.I get sucked in sometimes by the fear and what could happen down the road.If I allow it to grow, my fear becomes anxiety and rules my life affecting my relationships, my parenting, how I feel inside, my self-care and more. So I make a conscious effort to be aware of the dark side and even befriend it.  Weird, I know. Yet somehow when I befriend it using energy healing and meditation, the powerful combination buoys me to move forward.  NO it is not always comfortable.  Yes sometimes I cry (though I cry expressing many of my feelings).  Does it always get better? YES. If you want help, just ask. More...

2017: A Universal New Beginning By Dr. Paula Joyce Feb10

2017: A Universal New Beginning By Dr. Paula Joyce...

I have been interested in the meaning of numbers since childhood. My curiosity was aroused when I realized that my family always gave gifts in multiples of $18 regardless of whether it was to honor the memory of someone or to celebrate a happy occasion. I didn’t think of it as a superstition. It was just an accepted, unquestioned part of my reality. Eventually I learned that in Hebrew, 18 means life and thus is considered a lucky number. This belief stems from Jewish numerology, called Gematria. Regular numerology, adds the numbers to get a single digit, 9, which is a humanitarian number or the brotherhood of mankind. Because 2017 adds up to the single digit of 1, the universe is at the beginning of a 9-year cycle. This new vibration affects us all, regardless of your own personal year. Please join us Thursday to learn what your personal year is, how the vibration of this universal 1 year will affect you and how President Trump’s personal year affects the United States and the world. What if you are not as Messed up as You Think you are? with Guest Diva Diaz By Heather Nichols...

Many of us spend a lot of time feeling out of place. Perhaps it is a sense that we don’t quite belong or that we can never quite get things “right”, or even that we always seem to get it wrong. What if that difference that we be, what we and others have always seen as wrong, is actually our strongness? If we looked at some of these “wrongnesses” from a different angle, without judgement, we may see something quite different. That child who always annoyed adults by asking endless questions, who was always in trouble, may become the adult who explores and discovers a different way of doing things that may be kinder to the planet and the beings on it. Those who have created some of the most massive change on the planet are rarely those who fit in the box of this reality. They tend not to be the rule followers and may be branded as troublemakers. Many of them struggle in school and yet had brilliant minds, such as Albert Einstein. The traits that are creative and inventive do not always fit into a world where people oppose change and anything new. What if you are the changemaker, the one who is here to be the very difference that will create the change our world requires now? Diva Diaz, International Speaker, Author, and Facilitator, began her career in business and economic media, travelled the world meeting business leaders and heads of state, and yet, despite her success, could not shake a feeling of stress, failure, not being good enough and being wrong. In her search to create more happiness and ease in her life she discovered the tools of Access Consciousness. Join Heather Nichols on Creating Beyond Reality Radio as...

Something to Crow About! By Cynthia Brian...

“I raised chickens because I love that feeling of being in the country and living from the soil” Eartha Kitt With 2017 being the Year of the Rooster, I am excited to share my gratitude to the poultry that graced my life. Chanticleer may be the reason I am where I am today. When I was eight years old I announced to my parents that I wanted to be able to go to college.  Since my grandparents had barely finished sixth to eighth grades and my parents had high school diplomas, I would be the first person in my family to strive for a university degree.  It was decided that the only way this dream would be possible is if I financed it myself.  My brilliant idea was to raise chickens, sell the eggs, and enter competitions at fairs to earn the cash.   My first clutch of chickens yielded nine pullets and three cockerels.  My favorite rooster was Chanticleer, a beautiful Rhode Island Red, who followed me everywhere.  A great deal of time was spent with my brood of twelve as I began my farm fresh egg business through my membership in the 4-H Club.  When fair season rolled around, I entered Chanticleer and my hens in the appropriate categories including showmanship. Chanticleer and I won blue ribbons and were named Grand Champions in every competition at every event, including the California State Fair.  At fairs outside the county where I resided it was necessary to enter Chanticleer in “open division” meaning I wasn’t competing against other children or 4-Her’s but was competing with professional breeders and adult hobbyists. Chanticleer still won Grand Champion and soon I was being heralded as a “California Champion Rooster Raiser” and “The Chicken Lady”  (Of course when...

After two years of painstaking effort, legendary and global superstars have come together to cover songs by Sting & The Police to raise money to fight the scourge of human trafficking. I struggle By Marni

What am I going to write about? The time I struggled and showed my ass by behaving like I’d lost my mind? There are moments I feel like I’m part of the circus or better yet starring in a sit-com.  My life is far from always being full of laughter though we laugh a lot in our family. I get tired of taking everything so seriously.  So I put on a pair of “TV glasses” and see what each situation I’m worried about, frustrated with, pissed about, and enjoying would like through the camera of a sit-com. I discovered this solution when Eli was an infant.  I was alone and changing his diaper.  He stuck one foot in poop, then another, then his hand.  Somehow it got on my hands too.  I was by myself at home.  And as a new mom, I began to panic.  How do I figure this out? How do I get my son and myself clean without getting poop everywhere.  Every idea I thought of resulted in me seeing my son ending up falling to the floor.  All the tools I needed were in other rooms,  The thought of carrying poop from room to room with a dog and three cats standing by to enter the fray filled me with more anxiety.   My body tensed and tightened.  And then Eli began to cry.  Big surprise, right?  And then as he wriggled in more poop, for a split second I imagined my reaction if I was watching this on TV.  What was the big deal? And I began to laugh.  And as I laughed and my body loosened, Eli calmed and smiled.  I have no idea how, but somehow I cleaned us both pretty quickly and easily.  And from then on, I pulled...

Mad As Hell And We Won’t Take It Anymore By Maureen Metcalf...

This blog is a companion to an interview with Barbara Kellerman on VoiceAmerica “Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations” on January 31, 2017 discussing the end of leadership as we know it and how the current landscape impacts the requirements of leaders going forward. This interview is one of the interviews conducted at the International Leadership Association Annual Conference. This post was drawn from www.BarbaraKellerman.com posted on November 28, 2016 with permission. “One of the most iconic scenes in American film history is in Paddy Chayefsky’s 1976 black comedy, “Network.” Peter Finch stars as Howard Beale, a network news anchor who’s about to be canned because of declining ratings. Beale starts to unravel while he’s on the air. He becomes visibly unhinged, screaming at his viewing audience, urging them to do what he’s doing – to shout at the top of their lungs, “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!” The line came to mind while reading today’s New York Times, which testified yet again not only to how furious people are, but to how hell bent they are on fighting people in positions of authority. Three examples: • South Koreans, fed up with their president, Park Geun-hye, have taken to the streets in the hundreds of thousands to protest her refusal to respond to charges of corruption and influence peddling. South Korea’s worst political crisis in decades shows no signs of abating. Ms. Park remains defiant. The people remain defiant as well – demanding that she either resign or be impeached. • The mayors of several of America’s largest cities have vowed to fight any order to deport illegal immigrants, even if instructed by the federal government to do so. Los Angeles’s Eric Garcetti, Chicago’s Rahm Emanuel, and New York’s Bill de...

What Your Mom Didn’t Tell You About Relationships with guest Kalpana Raghuraman By Heather Nichols...

So often we learn how to be in relationship by observing our parents.    Then we watch movies and read romance novels and these all form the relationship basis of what we create with our partners. We may allow our fantasies of the “perfect happily ever after relationship” to overshadow what we could actually create. Some of us may also choose to do the exact opposite of our parents and still find ourselves playing out old patterns that create more separation and discord than harmony. It is rare to see a relationship that is nurturing and honouring of both partners. One where both people can bring their entire selves to the relationship. Many of us have never experienced and rarely witnessed those types of relationships in our own lives or in the world around us. What if there is something else?  What if you could have a completely different type of relationship that does not fit into the conventional way it is done in this reality, and that could be created moment by moment?  What if you could have a relationship that makes you and your partner’s life greater, while simultaneously contributing to creating a greater world? Come join Kalpana Raghuraman and Heather Nichols as they explore definitely different possibilities that create relationships that are thriving, alive, creative and joyful! More...

On Humanity Evolve!, we Explore the link between confidence and dealing with negative emotions to live a full and vital life. Let Your Heart Guide You: It Knows. By Cheryl Esposito...

Cheryl Esposito welcomes Sonia Choquette, spiritual teacher, six-sensory consultant, transformational guide, & author of 19 best sellers on intuitive awakening & transformational capabilities. Our sixth sense, intuition, is our “first sense.” It is the conscious intelligence of our heart…many of us ignore its wisdom. We disregard our knowing in favor of the facts. Urgency addicted, we miss opportunities to create connections. In our busy-ness, is loneliness; a longing to live a meaningful purpose. We learn by doing, then by our un-doing. Sonia reached her un-doing: her brother died; 6 weeks later her father died; her marriage ended, her business unraveled. To regain spiritual footing she chose a pilgrimage, walking Camino de Santiago, 800km/500 miles over Pyrenees & across northern Spain. Walking Home: A Pilgrimage from Humbled to Healed is Sonia’s 35-day transformational journey into her heart’s knowing. Join Cheryl Esposito&Sonia Choquette to learn the way…into your own heart. From Pain to Gain: Changing your perspective on the negatives of life, and using pain to your advantage By Dr....

Is there still pain lingering in the background of your being, even though you’ve freed yourself from the infliction? Have you been told who you should be, or how you should behave?  Do you feel like you’re walking on eggshells, but can’t seem to push yourself onto a new path? I have experienced many of these moments of pain in the past. I simply chose to believe lies for far too long, that disempowered me…That had me agreeing with others opinions of me that were UNTRUE. I’ve emphatically demanded that me, my body, and the universe, create and empower me, as I choose to be. I speak up for those that can’t yet. I live for the eradication of abuse off of this planet. So, let us explore and uncover, what YOU can gain, from the pain of the lies that were embedded in you, that blurred the definition of the TRUE YOU. What could life be, if you chose to change the perspective on the negatives of life, and used the experiences for your advantage? Let’s shift from pain to...

Leadership Evolution: Theory and Practice in Action By Maureen Metcalf Jan27

Leadership Evolution: Theory and Practice in Action By Maureen Metcalf...

This blog is a companion to the interview with Dr. Gill Robinson Hickman and Jorrit Volkers on VoiceAmerica “Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations” on January 24, 2017, focusing on leaders moving away from the cult of personality and toward supporting the mission of the organization by supporting followers. This interview was conducted at the International Leadership Association Annual Conference. In its simplest form, the term pracademics is a melding of the words practical and academic. Pracademics involves resolution of challenges with practical actions that align with “correct” academic theory and academic theory. John was the president of a third-party distribution company that provided a retail product and service for businesses. Throughout the course of his career, he had been very effective at spotting industry trends and shifting the organization to take advantage of those changes. This skill over decades created a financially strong organization. Unfortunately, he also had a blind spot in how he treated his people and his perception of his ability as a leader. He saw himself as the quintessential successful leader. As the world changed, he continued to lead from his stance of command and control. During his last couple of years, he fired a highly successful CIO and most of his team because he didn’t understand the need to make certain significant business changes. The CIO was heavily research-based and, therefore, discounted as too academic and not practical. In one instance, the CIO made a change to the hardware and processes that allowed the organization to avoid a multi-day outage of all technology support because he remained current on the trends and research. This leader’s forward-looking and research-based decisions and actions saved the company hundreds of thousands of dollars with just this single event. We all make mistakes and learn...

What if you could have infinite revenue streams that come from many different sources & directions that don’t require you to work more, work harder, and be responsible for all of the money coming in?  What if your business could have many, many different streams of revenue, and you could even have multiple businesses that have multiple revenue streams?  When we decide how something has to look, we eliminate the possibility of what could show up that could be even easier, more lucrative, and create even more ease in our worlds than we can imagine.  What if multiple revenue streams is about receiving more, rather than doing more? Come join Heather Nichols as she dives deeply into everything about business and money. Heather will share with you her tips, tools, and the questions she asks to create ever expanding possibilities in her own business and financial world. You may come to realize that you already have far more avenues for income than you were aware of, and that some powerful questions could change everything in your financial world! More...

Why Wear Someone Else’s Underwear By Marni...

Do you wake up feeling great and head out into your day only to find after a work meeting or a run to a store you feel off, cranky, sad, etc.? Does any room in your house or does your car feel off, cold or darker? If you are answering yes about any part of you or your space feeling off, you need energetic cleansing.  I want to help you and share some of my favorite rituals. I energetically cleanse myself and my home, often if not daily.  Whether you are an open channel or just unaware,  it is easy to pick up other people’s energy unknowingly not only in your own energetic field but also in your home, your car,  or any space you visit. If you wouldn’t want to share someone else’s underwear, why wear their energy? So what do you do to feel better? First begin by becoming more aware of how you feel so you notice when your feelings (physical, mental and emotional) change.   I begin my day doing a quick scan of me.  How do I feel: emotionally, physically, energetically.  If you don’t know the answers to all of them, it is okay.  It will come with practice.  Daily consistency is key.  Second cleanse your self.  Why?  Clearing a space without clearing yourself is like mopping your floor wearing dirty shoes.  How? There are many approaches for cleansing yourself.   Here is a short list.  You may like one or a couple; use them separately or together. There are no rules.,, feel what feels good to you. When you finish check in and see how you feel.  Don’t make this hard or complicated.    1- begin with water in the body;  Program a glass of water by holding it and setting an intention  Think and drink 2-Visualization: Create an...

Drones in the Home of the Future By Jessica Stoner...

“Drones in the Home of the Future” – this weeks episode of The Future of Real Estate radio show with Real Estate Futurist Jessica Stoner. How fun are Drones!? Now that we’re finally embarking on the future with the exponential growth of drones and drone technology, what can we expect from these little guys, in and around our homes, neighborhoods and cities? As we are very much on the precipice of the drone revolution, it’s difficult to really grasp the uses we can put them towards. Just like we could not guess the sheer number of apps and the many uses we put them towards on our mobile device when the iPhone first came out, similarly we can’t yet get the full picture of how many ways we’ll use these newly opened up 3 dimensions now available to us. Today’s show is going to be an exploration of where we know we are going with Drone technology, where we think and where we hope it will go, and how all it may affect your home and community of the future. Climate Change Battles; Where is the Collaboration? By David B. Savage Jan19

Climate Change Battles; Where is the Collaboration? By David B. Savage...

I am saddened by the constant battle for higher ground in the Climate Change Public Relations Wars. Where is the intelligence? Where is the collaboration? Where is the innovation? Where is the commitment? Our planet and our grandchildren deserve far better than this. Like the famous painting shown here, the battle rages on and while there are peacemakers, where are those making the necessary changes? Or in the energy battles, will we continue to cut down those with great technical knowledge and reduce those with a great social conscience? Like politics, in the climate discussion, the battles take the forefront while the war is being lost. It matters little who has a more acceptable or stronger social message, we must fix this mess. We must reduce emissions of all kinds. We must stop this dangerous trend. Here is what I experience today (click the links to websites as you read); 1) Before the Flood: Leonardo DiCaprio hopes his new film will inspire climate action Before the Flood article https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/oct/14/before-the-flood-leonardo-dicaprio-hopes-his-new-film-will-inspire-climate-action 2) Director of DiCaprio’s Before The Flood documentary ‘horrified’ by Alberta oilsands Horrified by Tar Sands http://www.calgarysun.com/2016/10/26/director-horrified-by-alberta-oilsands-in-leonardo-dicaprios-climate-change-doc-before-the-flood 3) this is where backgrounds, perceptions, and judgments divert us all into separate “camps”. Relaxation and Creation with guest Stephanie Richardson By Heather Nichols...

For so many, relaxation is synonymous with doing nothing, taking a break, or going on vacation.  What if, when you are being more of you and in your creative flow, you are more relaxed, and therefore more creative and productive?  What if relaxation is a space that allows you to accomplish so much more every day with a degree of ease you may have never considered possible? There are 3 different types of people that every business and every creative endeavor requires:  a creator, a connector, and a mover.  They have different gifts, different skills, and different capacities.  A common mistake that people make with business is in deciding that they, or their employees, have to do certain things in a particular way.  This can create stress, diminish relaxation, and get in the way of productivity. Join Heather Nichols and Stephanie Richardson for a conversation of “Relaxation and Creation” — a dynamic adventure into the energetics of creation and the nuances of business that will allow you to have more, create more, relax more, and be way more productive as a result! Be The Boss Everyone Wants To Work For By Maureen Metcalf Jan16

Be The Boss Everyone Wants To Work For By Maureen Metcalf...

This blog is a companion to an interview with Bill Gentry on VoiceAmerica “Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations” on January 17, 2017 discussing Be the Boss Everyone Wants to Work For, his recent book for new managers. This interview is one of the interviews conducted at the International Leadership Association Annual Conference. Do you remember the first car you ever had? Go back and think about it. Was it a 2-door or 4-door? A hand-me-down or brand new? A small car? A truck? I bet you still remember the feel of the steering wheel and how your body sat in the driver’s seat. The pre-set radio stations. The stories behind the dents or scratches it might have had. Maybe even the smell it had. All the intricacies that made it your own. My first car was a 1990 Chevy Blazer, 2-door, red. My high school and college buddies would pile into it. I named it “The Major General” and I loved that car. It’s funny how “firsts” make such an indelible, unforgettable, deep-rooted impression on our lives. And for many of these “firsts” there is usually some sort of course or training to introduce you to it and get you accustomed to it. With that first car you had, I’m sure your Mom or Dad or some other licensed adult taught you, or maybe you went to a driving school or took er’s education course. Being a leader for the first time in your life can make that same indelible, unforgettable, deep-rooted impression on your life too. It can set the course for your entire career and build a foundation and reputation for the type of leader you will be. And like driving a car, everyone gets training and development for such an important “first” in their working...

Dream a Little! By Cynthia Brian...

“Be at War with your Vices, at Peace with your Neighbours, & let every New-Year find you a better Man.” Benjamin Franklin Resolutions, goals, a fresh start. Does January bring out your best efforts in wishful thinking as you embark on a new year or do you have the stamina and mindfulness to actually fulfill your gardening dreams? The famous English gardener and writer, Vita Sackville-West, wrote: “The most noteworthy thing about gardeners is that they are always optimistic, always enterprising, and never satisfied. They always look forward to doing something better than they have ever done before.”  Although Vita died in 1962, her gardens at Sissinghurst survive as a national treasure, thriving with seasonal beauty and tender care from volunteers. I was fortunate enough to travel the grounds last year and marvel, even in the rain, at the expanse of her horticultural involvement. Vita’s quote definitely describes my personal gardening mantra as my motto has always been “Failure is fertilizer. Throw the mistake on the compost pile to grow a new garden.”  In other words, mistakes, or malfattis as we say in Italian are always an experiment in something new…and maybe even a better creation. I don’t rest on my bay laurels but keep on striving. One of my favorite global excursions is to visit gardens everywhere I travel. Exploring gardens, great and small, is a wonderful way to expand one’s horticultural intelligence while gathering ideas for one’s own plot. At the top of my resolution list for 2017 I’ve designated garden hopping as a must-do. In the past few weeks, I’ve had numerous emails from readers of this column with questions, comments, and aspirations as well as ambitious dreams for gardening in 2017.  Here are ideas you may wish to employ...

Ecosystems And Biodiversity Consist of Individuals Not Just Concepts, with Dr. Ian Redmond By Eli Weiss Jan13

Ecosystems And Biodiversity Consist of Individuals Not Just Concepts, with Dr. Ian Redmond By Eli Weiss...

Ian Redmond says, “I am a naturalist by birth, a biologist by training, and a conservationist by necessity. But conservation for me isn’t just about saving species. On a larger scale, the planet needs us to save functioning eco-systems; on a smaller scale, we must also recognize that species are made up of individual animals. For me, it became personal when I had the privilege of getting to know individual wild animals in the wild… I can truthfully say that some of my best friends are gorillas, and I care passionately about them and the future of all life on Earth.” His career shifted from research to conservationist when one of his subjects was killed. His work on behalf of animals was recognized in 1996 when presented with PAWS Humane Achievement Award, and appointed O.B.E. in 2006 at the Queen’s Birthday Honours. More...

Amelia has been the focus of hundreds of articles with world-wide circulation, including The New York Times. In addition to television programs, like The View, she was the subject of a BBC documentary showing her work with elephants. This touches on her true passion, which is leading her Sacred Harmony Safaris in Africa and assisting organizations that rescue elephants, lions, rhinos and more. Amelia is the author of several books on animal communication, including Whispers from the Wild: Listening to Voices from the Animal Kingdom, as well as Straight from the Horse’s Mouth and The Language of Miracles. Visit her at www.ameliakinkade.com Most of us think of life in hierarchical terms with human beings sitting at the top. Are you thinking: well, of course; we’re the most intelligent and the most civilized? If so, I want to challenge your thinking. Just suppose we are all pieces of a puzzle and the gifts of every animate being and inanimate object are needed in order to have true peace on earth? What if each species has specific information, wisdom and ways of experiencing the world that when brought together would create wholeness? What if we need to learn how to hear, feel and see every being and everything in order to be truly alive? If each of us does have a piece of the puzzle (or is a piece of the puzzle), we must respect each other and communicate...

How Do Leaders Influence Followers? By Maureen Metcalf Jan12

How Do Leaders Influence Followers? By Maureen Metcalf...

This blog is a companion to the interview with Dr. Gama Perucci and Aldo Boitano on VoiceAmerica “Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations” on January 10, 2017, focusing on leaders moving away from the cult of personality and toward supporting the mission of the organization by supporting followers. This interview was conducted at the International Leadership Association Annual Conference. We define innovative leadership as the ability to influence by engaging self, culture and systems equally. To me this means I am highly focused on influencing the people I lead and yet much of the leadership research focuses on the leadership qualities with the assumption that we are developing leaders that people want to follow. Is that an accurate statement? I grew up in a military family and my dad talked about “fragging”. Per Wikipedia: The term fragging is used to describe the deliberate killing or attempted killing by a soldier of a fellow soldier. I imagine most of us can imagine a leader we worked with that we did not appreciate. Early in my career I remember a well-meaning boss yelling at me for a minor mistake. Our culture was one where yelling was the primary method of reinforcing our leaders were serious. As a leadership consultant, I can’t imagine coaching my clients to yell more to build follower confidence. One of the key elements of effective leadership is the ability to inspire followership. In chapter 12 of Leader 2050: Critical Challenges, Key Contexts, and Emerging Trends, authors, Susan Cannon, Mike Morrow-Fox and I provided a list of seven competencies needed by highly effective leaders now and in the future. This chapter walks through trends that will impact the future and leadership mindsets and behaviors that are currently required and will need to be nurtured...

Tiny Homes By Jessica Stoner Jan12

Tiny Homes By Jessica Stoner...

Tiny Living is a movement taking place in many developed countries. It involves people making a conscious choice to live in small homes. Some choose this out of necessity, as affordability of housing in many cities and towns is increasingly becoming impractical. Others choose it for long term financial reasons, not wanting to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in their housing over their lives. We also have those drawn towards Tiny Living, due to the simplicity of it. Small homes equals small storage spaces, therefore less possessions. Many feel overwhelmed with our mainly consumerist society and the many things they own, have to take care of, move when relocating etc. Tiny Living results less “things” in one’s lives which comes with the feeling of Freedom and Relief. On today’s show, we will be chatting with two guests. A developer, Battistella Developments, building an inner-city micro-condo complex in Calgary, AB, and Tiny Home Alliance Canada,  an organization, that provides resources and assistance to those embarking on the Tiny Living lifestyle. Belinda Farrell: Find Your Friggin’ Joy! By Rebekah and Boyd Campbell...

In case you missed the live show on January 9, listen to the recorded archive! Belinda Farrell has overcome major life challenges—the suicide of her son, complete financial loss, and healing a degenerated spine without surgery. But all was not lost. By using ancient Hawaiian techniques and accepting responsibility for every aspect of her life, she was able to rise from the ashes, find her friggin’ joy, and now she’s sharing this invaluable information with others. About Belinda Farrell: Belinda is the author of the book Find Your Friggin’ Joy, graduated with a BA in Spanish and English from the University of California at Berkeley and is trained in hypnotherapy, past life regression, NLP, Hawaiian chanting, and ancient Hawaiian healing (Huna). She trained with Anthony Robbins and has effectively used these skills in her own life. She has completed 18 firewalks. When Belinda was forty-eight, she collapsed with herniated discs and spinal nerve damage. Threatened with paralysis by her medical doctors if she didn’t have surgery, Belinda instead chose to apply the ancient Hawaiian healing practices she had been learning the previous three years, which are covered in this book. Her back completely healed, including childhood scoliosis. For fifteen years she has been sharing these healing practices with others, offering Reconnective Healing & Huna classes &taking clients to Hawaii to teach Huna and swim with wild spinner dolphins. www.HunaHealing.com More...
