With less than two months to go to the launch of Building Banking on Values, a new VoiceAmerica radio series I’m hosting that goes behind the scenes to tell the stories of the people, passion and positivity within the values-based banking and financing sector; I thought to introduce you to some of our guests. Meet Linda van Goor, Regulatory Communications Expert whose motto is to ‘connect, translate, empower’ when facilitating change in the EU banking sector.  Linda has worked for universities, the banking sector, De Nederlandsche Bank and the European Commission as a teacher, adviser, moderator, issues-manager, supervisor, regulator and trainer. She’s been explaining, connecting, coordinating, translating, drafting and applying European regulatory issues in the financial sector for years. The European idea “unified in diversity” has always been a guiding principle. Finding common interests and bridging the gap between legal text and day-to-day practice has been my guiding approach. Regulatory communication is my means to find common interests and to guide and empower people to solve problems, to cooperate across national or sector borders and to create opportunities. Colleagues in Brussels sometimes referred to this approach as “the Linda way” – listening until finding the essence of a problem or a legal text, the commonalities and common goals of the many parties involved, then explaining that essence in simpler words to others and finally inducing joint initiatives. That’s how Linda van Goor contributed to bringing home high impact legislation (especially Directive 2011/89/EU and related initiatives regarding complex financial groups) in full cooperation with respective Presidencies and the Council, Commission colleagues and the European Parliament, and under the responsibility of the European Commission. Making Sense of Buddhism by Paula Joyce Apr13

Making Sense of Buddhism by Paula Joyce...

A client recently asked me what I knew about Buddhism. She wanted to go somewhere to immerse herself in Buddhist practice as a way of learning more. I shared some basic information and encouraged her to begin her search with the internet. The fact is that Buddhism is not one thing and there isn’t even agreement on the number of main branches. There are numerous questions to clarify including which particular teacher appeals to you. Most of us are familiar with His Holiness The Dalai Lama and the Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. But do you know what they believe and what the differences are between the different forms of Buddhism? According to my guest for this show, there are five precepts that are essential to all forms of Buddhism: “don’t kill, don’t steal, don’t have excessive wants, don’t lie, don’t get high.” In fact, he says that you can summarize Buddhist precepts into one simple concept: Don’t be a jerk. Please join us Thursday to learn more about Buddhist wisdom and...

Congress Should Not Be a Part-Time Job by Rebecca Costa Apr12

Congress Should Not Be a Part-Time Job by Rebecca Costa...

What if the next President of the United States decided not to move to the nation’s capital? After the election, they announced plans to fly into Washington on Monday — keep office hours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays — and return home on Friday. What if they were comfortable sleeping on the sofa in the Oval Office, showering at the gym, and eating in the staff cafeteria when they were in town? What? You don’t like the sound of that? Welcome to the United States Congress. According to former Senate Majority Leaders, Tom Daschle (D) and Trent Lott (R), members of Congress presently work together three days a week, or less. So, no one knows any one any more. There’s no camaraderie, no communication, no socializing, no nothing. Given this environment, its no wonder government leaders can’t find common ground. Compromise takes time, cooperation, give and take. It’s a lot like a marriage — and we all know what the stats on long distance relationships look like. So how bad is it? The latest stats reveal that 78 percent of those elected to Congress now spend 40 out of 52 weekends a year at home. Tim Roemer, former representative from Indiana claims that Congressional “commuting” is taking a serious toll: “Despite a $174,000 salary, members of Congress do the job we elected them to do only ‘part time.’ The rest of the time, they are chasing money for their re-election campaigns.” Which means time away from the nation’s capital, and business. The days when leaders bonded over children’s birthday parties, a weekend neighborhood barbeque, and working side by side into the night to pass legislation, are all long gone. In fact, so many Representatives and Senators now commute that no voting is scheduled on...

What are Smart CIOs Doing? Apr12

What are Smart CIOs Doing?...

This blog is a collaboration between Angelo Mazzocco, CIO, Central Ohio Primary Care and Co-Founding Organizer of the CIO Tomorrow Conference, and Maureen Metcalf, CEO, Metcalf & Associates and host of the Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations radio program. The world is changing dramatically, and technology is leading this global transition. As technology leaders, you will be distinguished by your ability anticipate trends and recommend changes that leverage them before your competition does. This proactive ability to read what is happening and turn it into a competitive advantage is rare and highly valuable to companies. “Former Intel Chairman Andy Grove said that an inflection point, ‘occurs where the old strategic picture dissolves and gives way to the new.’ This seems to be happening with disconcerting regularity. Every day, contemporary executives confront a series of inflection points – situations in which received wisdom is no longer adequate or appropriate for the task at hand. Francois Hollande became the president of France on the promise of being “Mr. Normal.” His record-settingly low popularity suggests that, at least in France, there is no place for normal, as The New York Times put it. That may be true everywhere. Here’s the thing: Great leaders are able to imagine and hence control what is on the other side of the inflection point.” Thorton May, Innovative Leaders Guide to Implementing Analytics Programs One of the most common questions Maureen hears from technology leaders is: with all of the changes, how can I manage the deluge of information, identify the critical elements and stay current? To figure this out, she interviewed Angelo about his thoughts on his personal development to understand what shaped his thinking when he invited high-profile keynote speakers to the upcoming CIO Tomorrow conference. The event, held in...

Slowing Down, An excerpt from Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment Apr11

Slowing Down, An excerpt from Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment...

Slowing Down An excerpt from Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment by Ariel & Shya Kane It was a cold sunny day in New Jersey and the first thin layers of ice were forming on our pond. We were scheduled to go to Pilates that day, our private exercise class with a trainer, but we liked doing some cardio workout first. Usually, weather permitting, we would take a walk through town before our class. Even with the sun out the cold was not appealing, so we opted for a more rigorous half-hour of exercise on our treadmill and elliptical machines. Here is what happened: First, I noticed that I was watching the clock: Uhh-Oh, trying to get it over with… You know… What you resist persists and takes lonnngger. I mentioned to Shya that I was clock watching and we began to chat which took our thoughts away from the time. As we moved along, joked and sweated, I came to realize that something had been bothering me since the day before. I had made a couple of mistakes in the last few days. Not big ones, just a red flag that something in me was not quite as crisp as I would have liked. I was not operating from the bull’s eye of my own personal center. I mentioned it to Shya. I told him the little details that were plaguing my thoughts. Here is what he had to say: “Ariel, slow down. Just a little bit. You are trying to do too much, too fast.” And that was that. We finished our workout at home and then went to work out with our trainer. Class was fun. I didn’t try to get it over with. I exercised to the best of...

What Makes Breaking Up So Hard to Do? by Dr.Suzanne B. Phillips...

Most people would agree that “breaking up is hard to do.” Whereas there is a great deal of attention to the broken heart of a lost love, there is much less focus on the difficulty of being the one to break up a relationship.  Issues like fear of judgment, co-dependency, family expectations and dismissal of one’s own needs complicate the breaking up of a dating relationship.  Understanding and strategies offered. COLLABORATIVE COMMUNICATION: HOW TO STAND OUT AND OPEN DOORS THROUGH YOUR WRITTEN WORD by Hemda Mizrahi and Elaine Rosenblum Apr08

COLLABORATIVE COMMUNICATION: HOW TO STAND OUT AND OPEN DOORS THROUGH YOUR WRITTEN WORD by Hemda Mizrahi and Elaine Rosenblum...

How can you negotiate better, improve your self-presentation skills, and prevent misunderstandings that may emerge from e-communications, such as texting and emailing? Elaine Rosenblum, JD, an expert in COLLABORATIVE COMMUNICATION, joined me on “Turn the Page” to share tactics that will enable you to open doors through your written and spoken words. Listen to our conversation to hear the full range of her suggestions and illustrations. Elaine states, “To avoid potential miscommunication, SPECIFICITY is as important as shifting from judgmental to neutral language, especially in texting or emailing people you don’t know well, or in professional interactions.” She provides two examples: MICHAEL, AN EMORY MBA STUDENT PITCHING HIMSELF FOR A JOB Elaine suggests to Michael: Instead of  “I think I have the skills to do this job,” let your interviewers know, “I am an Emory MBA with four years of beverage marketing experience at Coca Cola and Starbucks. I can conduct business in English, French and Spanish.” FROM INDIANA UNIVERSITY TO GOLDMAN SACHS “Young people interviewing for first jobs typically only have internship experience and minimal workplace skills. It’s imperative for recent or soon-to-be grads to understand “transferable skills” and articulate what makes them uniquely interesting. This Indiana student was a poker prodigy at nine. Few college juniors can own this proposition. Poker also has transferable skills to Wall Street. The Goldman feedback was that telling an engaging “story” about his “poker gift” is what set him apart and landed him the “long-shot” position.  Even seasoned executives have to work to maintain their specificity when articulating.” MORE ON SPECIFICITY “Using “them,” “it,” or “that” as reference points in texting may not provide adequate context. While it takes more actual texting words, directly stating time and place or redefining who “them” or what “it” or “that”...

The College Visit: What Questions Should I Be Asking?...

College visits can be an incredibly valuable part of the college process—or they can be a big waste of time and money. Students and families can make these worth their while by thinking ahead about the kinds of questions they want to ask and of whom, and we’ll be offering guidance around both in this week’s show. In another of our ongoing segments on students’ college choices, this week we’ll hear from a student who chose the University of South Carolina after originally setting her sights on small liberal arts colleges. And finally, we’re running part two in our series on tuition reciprocity agreements with a focus on the New England Regional Student Program. April Garden Guide by Cynthia Brian...

“April hath put a spirit of youth in everything.” William Shakespeare The siren song of spring calls my soul to the outdoors as swiftly as the mermaid lures the sailor to the depths of the sea. The fragrance of the blossoms, the colors of blooms, the chirping of the birds, the croaking of the frogs, and the scent of green grasses speak to my deepest being. Our precious earth is in the process of re-birth and no matter how many years I’ve witnessed this evolution, I am always in awe. My camera captures thousands of photos, most of which looked so much better with the naked eye, yet I want to record the beauty. I am obsessed with the lilacs, wisteria, iris, freesia, fruit trees, wildflowers, and, especially the soothing sounds of the cascading creeks. Spring-how I love thee! As wild turkeys gobble gobble along the hillsides and into our streets unaware that turkey season is open for those who seek to bag a bird for a barbecue and as the deer begin to nibble our budding roses, it’s wise to consider protecting our delicate plants from our indigenous predators.  Wire, netting, and fences are our most effective armor.  El Nino has been a blessing in quenching our thirsty gardens, especially our lawns, yet the prodigious weeds, if left unattended will compete with our flowers for moisture in summer. Now is the time to take action. Every morning as I walk my property, I tell myself I’ll spend only an hour in the garden after work. However, the hour quietly melts into three or four and soon I’m weeding by flashlight. This is love. It’s springtime in our gardens and fun is pending! Go out and dig. ⎫ ADD edible flowers to your dining experience....

Working as a support mechanism to the body, Reiki re-establishes a normal energy flow of ki (life force energy) throughout the system, which in turn can enhance and accelerate the body’s innate healing ability. Reiki does not require that the practitioner guides the energy with the mind, as the energy is guided by the higher power that knows what vibration or combination of vibrations are needed by the client. Find out how Reiki can benefit you. We will explore the incredible healing benefits reported by people who have learned Reiki and from those who have received Reiki.  We invite you to call in or email us to share your own experience with Reiki. A gifted orator, musician, and transformational leader, Kute’s passion is helping you reveal your passion and live it. Raised in Ghana, the son of a revered spiritual leader, Kute has a presence that inspires. He was age 8 the first time he spoke in front of 3000 people with his father by his side. By age 18 with speaking appearances in over 300 venues, Kute was getting restless.  Having the courage to choose his own way in the world rather than step into the role that awaited him as his father’s successor, he left for the U.S. with “two suitcases and a dream”. He knew he wanted to help others live their own truth, not the truth that anyone else had created for them. “What are you pretending not to know?” Kute asks as he takes you on a transformational journey to dig deep and tell yourself your truth. He dares you to “pick up the instrument that is your heart and play it fully.” There is liberation in being who you are meant to be, rather than living the story that others have created about you. Whose life is it, anyway? Join Cheryl Esposito & Kute Blackson in creating your next masterpiece:...

Innovate How You Lead: Create A Business Advantage by Maureen Metcalf Mar31

Innovate How You Lead: Create A Business Advantage by Maureen Metcalf...

What does innovating leadership really mean? Let’s start with the definition of leadership as a uniquely human activity that is intended to move an organization forward such that it improves the lives of the people it serves and simultaneously takes into consideration the rightful interests of the organizational members. It is important to note that each individual leader will lead in a manner that is authentic to his or her unique skills, abilities, personality, beliefs, values, and other influencing factors such as brain chemistry. Effective leadership encompasses both the science of leading and the heart of the leader. It requires heartfelt care, compassion, and authenticity to be truly effective. This does not mean leaders are soft, but rather they demonstrate compassion when taking tough action. Being a good scientist and understanding the theory is a good start but insufficient if the leader does not demonstrate deep care for the people being led and the people being served. Innovating leadership cannot be applied as a monolithic theory, or as a simple prescriptive measure. It occurs through your own intellect and stems from your own unique sensibilities. Let’s build a foundation from which to explore both innovation and leadership, which means talking about them in an entirely different context. Leadership is a process of influencing people strategically and tactically, effecting change in intentions, actions, culture, and systems to move the organization forward such that it improves the lives of the people it serves and simultaneously takes into consideration the rightful interests of the organizational members. Leadership influences individual intentions and organizational cultural norms by inspiring purpose and creating alignment. It equally influences an individual’s actions and an organization’s efficiencies through tactical decisions. Innovation, as an extension of leadership, refers to the novel ways in which we...

ARE YOU READY FOR SENSORWORLD? by Rebecca Costa Mar30

ARE YOU READY FOR SENSORWORLD? by Rebecca Costa...

Sensors, sensors, everywhere sensors.  In our clothes, our shoes, air conditioners, cars, diapers and beds. And what are all these sensors doing? They’re collecting and analyzing data of course – billions of discrete pieces of information every picosecond of every day so we can, a) make informed decisions and, b) automate all of the things connected by the IoT (Internet of Things).  Soon sensors embedded in my pajamas will determine I’m dehydrated from having a little too much fun the night before, then send a message to the 3-D food printer in my kitchen to make a drink designed to replenish my electrolytes.  Sensors will also heat my house the minute my car heads for home and tell me when my 16-year old is driving over the speed limit.   Sound far-fetched?  It shouldn’t. Recently, Senior Editor of Wired Magazine, Bill Wasik, reported, “A new device revolution is at hand: just as mobile phones and tablets displaced the once-dominant PC,  wearable devices are poised to push smartphones aside.” In truth, the U.S. sensor market is expected to surpass $15 billion in 2016, causing On World to forecast that by 2017, global shipments of wearable, implantable, and mobile health and fitness devices will be up 552% from 2012. Welcome to SensorWorld. Now sensors and data analytics are preparing to go where ‘no man has gone before.’ Tackling an activity we spend a third of our lives ignoring: sleep! Why sleep? The National Sleep Foundation reports that 43% of Americans rarely get a good night’s sleep, and 60% experience a sleep problem almost every night. A recent Gallup poll revealed that since 1942, the amount of sleep we get has decreased roughly a half an hour per night and continues to trend downward. And the Center...

How to WIN: Inspire with Insight, Grace and Action by Cheryl Esposito Mar29

How to WIN: Inspire with Insight, Grace and Action by Cheryl Esposito...

Cheryl Esposito welcomes Kristin Engvig, pioneering founder of WIN (Women’s International Networking), who has dedicated the past 20 years to women’s leadership and organizational change, inspiring others to create a world where business and society flourish and all people thrive. What do you do when the seed of an idea evolves into a vision, then becomes a force of influence and transformation for women around the world? If you are Kristin Engvig, founder of WIN, you breathe. You consider possibility. You build relationships. You step forward not knowing the outcome. You trust. You course correct if something does not work. What you don’t do is give up the core of the seed, the intent that was bigger than even you could imagine at the time, the values that nurtured the idea into being. This is not always the path of least resistance… A native of Norway, Kristin believes it is her responsibility to be a global citizen. Her career spans leadership roles at global corporations including JPMorgan & Citibank, to her current work as an international strategy and marketing consultant. In the midst of that journey, Kristin’s vision of “…a sustainable, feminine, global & authentic way of being in work, communities & life…” evolved into her founding of WIN (Women’s International Networking), which today is an independent global women’s leadership organization. Transforming ourselves in order to transform the world – one where business & societies flourish and all people thrive… building relationships to inspire possibility…stepping forward to take action, trusting that each step is a transformative moment for humanity. Every moment matters. Every person matters. Tune in every Friday at 10am PST to Leading...

HOW TO LEAD WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM YOUR EMOTIONS by Hemda Mizrahi and Pat Baxter Mar29

HOW TO LEAD WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM YOUR EMOTIONS by Hemda Mizrahi and Pat Baxter...

Pat Baxter, Ed.D., MS, CSA, author of “Cool Change: Turning Emotions Into Leadership Strengths,” joined me on “Turn the Page”  to discuss how emotions help us to be guided by our experiences, better manage relationships, and take productive action. Listen to our conversation about engaging the benefits, and minimizing the liabilities of expressing feelings at work. The ability to regulate one’s emotions is an important marker of performing well in high-pressure situations. The more limber you are in responding to stress, the more access you’ll be granted to influence others. Dr. Baxter expanded on our discussion after the show, by sharing additional tactics for constructively engaging emotions: EMPATHY IS A CRITICAL SKILL IN BUILDING STRONGER RELATIONSHIPS. Research shows that women are likely to have higher scores in certain Emotional Intelligence competencies (which can make them strong leaders!), especially empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand and relate to another’s feelings. Both empathy and emotional awareness are skills that can be learned. One of the most effective actions you can take to establish an empathetic relationship is to listen carefully and closely. When the person pauses or becomes quiet, repeat back what you heard (not word for word), using your own words to convey what you understood. Image Relationship Therapy, pioneered by Harville Hendrix, encourages the listener to then ask, “did I get it?” and “is there anything else?” This type of approach is foundational to coaching, counseling, and mediation given how supported, respected, and cared for the person speaking feels. It is a great strategy for deescalating a heated situation. BEING EMOTIONALLY AWARE ENABLES YOU TO GET “UNSTUCK” IN YOUR EMOTIONS. Emotional awareness invites you to pinpoint the triggers and other factors that contribute to your emotions, and to be empowered by the insights that...

The Brains of Leaders: Manage Your Thinking to Improve Your Effectiveness by Maureen Metcalf Mar29

The Brains of Leaders: Manage Your Thinking to Improve Your Effectiveness by Maureen Metcalf...

The following post is by guest Gary Weber, Subject/collaborator in neuroscience studies at Yale, Institute Of Noetic Sciences, Baumann Institute, Center for Study of Non-Symbolic Consciousness, Johns Hopkins, Penn State. It accompanies a Voice America Interview about how leaders can manage their thinking to improve their effectiveness. I found the conversation about how the brain actually works and how we manage our thinking versus our perception of what we are doing quite fascinating. For me, the take away was that our brain functions much differently than we were taught and by updating our understanding, we have the opportunity to reduce our stress and improve our effectiveness dramatically. From Gary’s work: One of our great, and common (mis)conceptions is that we need “thoughts” to speak – that we “think up”, consciously, what we say before we say it.  As an experiment, take a few minutes and watch carefully what you say, and see if you do think up what you say.   Go ahead, just do it… Do we know what we’re going to say before we say it?   Or do we just hear it as it is said, and then try to see if it was a “good” thing or if we might have “misspoken”? The quieter your internal narrative is, and the closer you watch, the easier it is to see that you have no idea what is going to be coming out when speech happens. An excellent paper was just published in “Psychological Science” entitled “Speakers’ Acceptance of Real-Time Speech Exchange Indicates That We Use Auditory Feedback to Specify the Meaning of What We Say”, by Andreas Lind, et al., from the Swedish universities at Uppsala and Lund. What Lind and his colleagues did was to see what would happen if...

A Simple Solution to Loneliness by Paula Joyce Mar26

A Simple Solution to Loneliness by Paula Joyce...

Being lonely is not the same as being alone. You can be married, a member of a book club or a CEO and still be lonely. 1 out of 5 people are lonely and that number is increasing. Even though loneliness is not classified as a mental health disorder, it does affect our health and well-being like depression or anxiety do. In fact, Time Magazine recently ran a piece entitled, “Why Loneliness May Be The Next Big Public-Health Issue.” Clearly we need to take this seriously. Studies have shown that chronic loneliness increases mortality, inhibits one’s immune system, increases blood pressure, detrimentally impacts sleep patterns and has negative health consequences on a par with obesity, alcoholism and cigarette smoking. It’s even associated with dementia. Yet loneliness is not just an issue for seniors. In fact, nearly 60% of those aged 18-34 say they are lonely often or sometimes compared to 35% of those over 55. Please join us next Thursday to learn the causes and cure for being lonely....

Grow a WildFlower Garden with Cynthia Brian...

“May all your weeds be wildflowers.” When I was a child weeds and wildflowers were synonymous. I would meander through the hills and creeks with my handy Golden Nature Guide called “Flowers: A Guide to Familiar American WildFlowers” along with notebook, paper, and a Brownie camera to capture the images and properties of as many specimens that I could find. Trillium, morning glory, lupin, California poppy, clover, stargazer, brodias, columbine, buttercups, and mustard all captivated me. I would pick the flowers to quickly bring home to iron between wax paper and catalogue into my wildflower scrapbook. In a field of specimens, I’d dig a plant up with the attached roots to transplant into my personal flower plot. What I found out is that wildflowers aren’t fussy. They grow in all kinds of soil, don’t need water once they are established, and add stunning textures and vibrancy to your landscape. 1. Find a place where the flowers will get at least six hours of daily sunshine. Wildflowers need lots of sunshine. 2. Before spreading the seed, clear the dirt. Purge all weeds, grasses, or any other growth from the area. Turn the toil with a hoe or a tiller. 3. Rake the soil. 4. Add sand to the seeds at the rate of ten parts sand to one part seed. This will help you to see it when you spread it. Use a seed spreader if you are seeding a big area, or feel free to sprinkle by hand. 5. Don’t cover the seed with soil. It does need to be compressed for better germination either by walking on it or rolling it. I use a five gallon bucket to roll over the seeded soil in any smaller locations. 6. Water the seeds regularly until...

WILL THE PARTIES LINE UP BEHIND TRUMP AND CLINTON? by Rebecca Costa Mar24

WILL THE PARTIES LINE UP BEHIND TRUMP AND CLINTON? by Rebecca Costa...

As we near the end of the primary season and the reality of a national contest sets in, the question on everyone’s mind is whether voters will come together to support their party’s nominee. Romney and other GOP leaders have publicly stated they will not support frontrunner Donald Trump. On the other hand, polls show that many Bernie Sanders supporters would rather sit the election out than cast their vote for Clinton.  In short, both leading contenders face serious obstacles when it comes to unifying their parties, let alone the country. First, Trump. Though he won three states on Super Tuesday and has secured roughly half the delegates needed to win the GOP nomination, last week party leaders secretly gathered to block Trump from the general election. Politico obtained a copy of an invitation sent to Republican leaders which read, “Please join other conservative leaders to strategize how to defeat Donald Trump for the Republican nomination, and if he is the Republican nominee for President, to offer a true conservative candidate in the general election.” According to political insider, Roger Stone, the Republican Party has, “cooked up a strategy…to steal delegates from Trump so that he’ll fall below 1,237 on the first ballot, and then, before the second ballot, to present one of their (own) group … as the Savior of the Grand Old Party.” Given opposition from the most powerful members of his party, can Trump bring the GOP together?  He can if he follows these 3 simple steps: For openers, make certain his competitors join forces with him.  Though Trump is widely known for his deal-making skills, pundits were completely caught off guard when Chris Christie and Ben Carson aligned with the frontrunner.  If he’s successful at negotiating similar support from Rubio,...

How Big Change Happens by Maureen Metcalf Mar23

How Big Change Happens by Maureen Metcalf...

This post is provided by Metcalf & Associates and collaborator Jim Ritchie-Dunham  as a companion for the March 22 Voice America interview with Christoph Hinske focusing on How Big Change Happens in his keynote presentation to the World Green Building Council. Jim is president of the Institute for Strategic Clarity, a trustee of THORLO, and an adjunct faculty member at the EGADE Business School and at Harvard. In this post Jim talks about his  “theory of impact resilience.” While a theory of change focuses on how a change in an intervention will lead to a change in specific means, which will drive change in a specific social impact–in a linear model–a theory of impact resilience looks at the system of causes, effects, feedback, and stakeholders that lead some interventions to generate a much more resilient system that delivers much greater, sustained impact. This information is for leaders who have struggled to successfully implement complex change using linear models and want to better understand alternative approaches that will increase the probability to success for much needed and highly visible change projects. More and more people are looking to large-scale social change processes to leverage their impact around very complex issues. From poverty, health, education, epidemics, and inequity to water, air, green building, and renewable energy. Scaling collective impact is everywhere. I have been looking at, and engaging with many of these efforts, for two decades now. In trying to figure out how to support large-scale change, many groups are trying to become evermore strategic. As a big proponent of strategic clarity, I encourage the strategic dialog, and I encourage pathways that will support a group in getting to greater clarity about what they can do together and what will work. In their strategic development processes,...

E. Coli – The Bug That Just Won’t Go Away! by Nicholas St Jon...

Yes, yet another case! A Valley Center, Kansas girl was reported with a “severe” case of E.Coli. Late last year it was cases that had cropped up across America from “suspected” contamination at Chipotle restaurants that have since been unable to isolate where it came from. Before that it was cantaloupes, lettuce, and peanut butter. You can live in fear of going out to eat or you can strengthen your Immune System so strong that even if you are infected your system will get rid of it so fast you’ll probably not even know you should have been sick. E. Coli is a bacteria that is very common and only a small handful actually can cause your digestive system problems. BUT – when it does, it can make you wish life would just end because the pain inflicted by this tiny little bacteria is no small thing. Many refer to it as food poisoning, which I guess if you want to label it, that’s as good as any. So if my Immune System was sub-optimal and I found myself face to face with this nasty little pain causing creature, here’s what I would do to stop the thing in its tracks. First, go to my local health food store, my preference is Natural Grocers, and get a bottle of NOW’s Sodium Ascorbate crystal powder, the 227 gram size is most common for anywhere between $12 – $15, its very inexpensive. I’d make my own batch of Colloidal Silver with my AVAg47 generator, but I could also pick up a bottle of the strongest Colloidal Silver I could find, hopefully in the 200 ppm (parts per million) range or higher. Even though I wouldn’t feel like drinking ANYTHING, I’d add 5 grams of Sodium Ascorbate...

Self-Justification in Politics and Life: More Dangerous Than Lying by Dr. Suzanne B. Phillips...

In the current political climate the title of Travis and Aronson’s book “Mistakes Were Made: But Not By Me” is a rationale by leaders that many worry about. It brings to the forefront the human tendency to Self-Justify and the positives and negatives associated with it. A closer look reveals that when self-justification of negative actions becomes the automatic response in our personal or political lives– the impact is more dangerous than lying. Read more...

HOW YOU CAN OPTIMIZE YOUR CREDIT SCORE AND BETTER UNDERSTAND YOUR SPENDING AND SAVING BEHAVIORS Mar17

HOW YOU CAN OPTIMIZE YOUR CREDIT SCORE AND BETTER UNDERSTAND YOUR SPENDING AND SAVING BEHAVIORS...

Financial Behaviorist Syble Solomon joined me on “Turn the Page” to discuss how her Money Habitudes card game, which has been used by hundreds of thousands of people globally, helps people to have their “best ever” conversations about money. These types of dialogues can support couples in staying together, the wealthy in improving their quality of life (affluence does not imply well-being!), and those who are financially challenged to thrive. Listen to our episode for insights that will guide you in better understanding your spending and saving behaviors. “Credit” is a topic that goes hand-in-hand with your habits and attitudes about money. Subsequent to our show, Syble and her colleague, Lee Gimpel, with whom she created The Good Credit Game, provided information that will assist you in optimizing your credit score. Given the variability in how credit works in different parts of the world, the suggestions they shared are best applied in the U.S. Here’s what they said: WHY CREDIT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU Your credit score is derived from the contents of your credit report at the time that the data is requested. Different companies produce both general scores, and ones that are specific to particular industries and different types of credit requests. Your score answers the question, “How much does the financial system trust you?” It determines the likelihood you’ll be approved for credit or a loan, and the rates you’ll receive. Your credit background is increasingly used beyond traditional places like getting a mortgage or car loan. It may figure into whether someone will rent to you, or if you qualify for a job, especially those that require security clearances. Lower credit scores can mean higher car insurance rates. Statistically, people with lower scores make more insurance claims. START BUILDING GOOD CREDIT NOW....

How to Make the Right Decision: Going From Worrier to Warrior in 10 Easy Steps by Hemda Mizrahi & Benson Simmonds Mar16

How to Make the Right Decision: Going From Worrier to Warrior in 10 Easy Steps by Hemda Mizrahi & Benson...

Award-winning actor, coach, and writer Benson Simmonds joined me on “Turn the Page” to discuss his recently published book, “SOULAR POWER  – Unlocking the Eight Gates to Joy and Abundance,” which reflects his 20 years of study in the dramatic arts, Kabbalah, Eastern Philosophy, and Mysticism. Listen to this episode to access greater meaning, joy, and success in your life. Benson expanded upon our conversation after the show, by sharing how you can apply the key tactics he offered to the process of making “good” decisions. If you’re generally decisive and find yourself in new waters with an unprecedented anxiety or conflict that’s causing you to feel “stuck,” this approach will help you to move forward with greater peace of mind. If you frequently  have a hard time making decisions, Benson’s “ten steps” will teach you how to choose more quickly, and with greater confidence. Here’s what he taught me—in his own words: We’ve all been there – gripped by fear when needing to make an important decision. We’re afraid of making the “wrong” choice, or one that will result in a negative outcome for ourselves or someone else. Whether you’re making business decision, considering whether to leave or stay in a relationship, making choices regarding your health, school, or even what color shoes to buy, the underlying constant is that feeling for fear. When in fear, you are in worrier (ego) mode, as opposed to warrior (soul) mode, that place from which you can tap into the power of your soul. You soul is your untapped brain potential, that part of you that is connected to a divine source of unlimited joy, love and expansion. What about the old, “make a list of pros and cons, so you can detach emotionally” approach? That strategy...

JOB NUMBER ONE FOR THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES by Rebecca Costa Mar16

JOB NUMBER ONE FOR THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES by Rebecca Costa...

As of today, there have been 12 Republican and 9 Democratic primary debates, with more to come.  In each exchange the candidates have been asked to explain their priorities. Donald Trump listed border security at the top of his list.  Sanders said an equal economic playing field for all Americans was key.  Kasich claimed the $12 trillion deficit was a national emergency. And Cruz promised he would devote his first 100 days in office to repealing the Affordable Care Act, the Iran nuclear agreement, Common Core, and every other measure Obama put forth. From job creation, terrorism and immigration, to tax and education reform, the candidates have offered an impressive list of “top priorities.” But are these issues really job number one for the next President of the United States? Probably not. And here’s why: none of candidate’s plans, intentions, or detailed programs matter if the impasse between the two parties persists.  Think about it: would Clinton or Sanders have better luck getting the Senate to confirm a Supreme Court nominee than Obama?  Would they be more successful at getting anything through the current Congress?  And how about Cruz or Trump?  Cruz’s track record of bringing members of the Senate together is on par with Trump’s claim that he can unify Hispanic, Muslim, women and black voters. This week on The Costa Report, former Senator from Arkansas, Mark Pryor, compared the standoff between the Congress and Executive Branch today with similar conditions eleven years ago.  As Bush was preparing to submit his court nominees, the Democratic leadership announced they would filibuster all of the President’s nominees.  To which the Republican establishment fired back threatening to change the filibuster rules to stop the Democrats.  And for a while we faced an irresolvable stalemate – with...

The Four Purposes of Life: Finding Meaning and Direction in a Changing World Mar16

The Four Purposes of Life: Finding Meaning and Direction in a Changing World...

When I was declaring a college major, I told my parents that I wanted to become a writer. Their response was: “You’ll be a teacher. Write on your own time.” My only choices were what subject and what age group. So I got as close as I could and majored in English. That turned out to be a good thing for me because I was able to use my education and experience to develop my life path. How many of us, however, are able to break away from the “have to’s” and “should’s”? Women especially need to examine whether we’re playing a role, meeting parental, societal or spousal expectations or if we’re following our own path. We assume roles to please others. All of us, men and women, must discover who we really are and allow that to emerge into the world. Many men are nurturers and many women are leaders and intellectuals. We must break out of societal conditioning and allow our true purpose to emerge. Please join us Thursday to hear Dan Millman share the wisdom he has garnered in his own search....

It begins with each one of us – practical strategies, simple actions that we can take today. The best part? We define our own steps: “what matters to me.” “At the heart of it, I believe what we want is a new context, a new story for the third millennium – one that inspires us all, one that enlivens humanity.” This is an opportunity to create your own inquiry into what matters in your heart. And bring that to life…simply…every day. Join Cheryl Esposito & Martin Rutte to learn the 3 questions that can change the world…starting with...

In this case, she had to make a difficult decision between USC and Carnegie Mellon, and she’s going to tell us how she did this. A recent article outlined some suggestions for how to raise a creative child, and they didn’t involve overscheduling or—gasp—over-parenting. We’re also going to answer listener questions about college finance. Tune in live every Thursday at 1pm PST to Getting In: A College Coach...

Simple Gifts, An excerpt from Practical Enlightenment Mar11

Simple Gifts, An excerpt from Practical Enlightenment...

Simple Gifts An excerpt from Practical Enlightenment by Ariel & Shya Kane Although we had been good friends a long time ago, we hadn’t seen Eric in more than 20 years. It was the first time he had attended one of our Say YES to Your Life! evenings in New York City. He had traveled from Boston to attend our special event, Employee of the Year, a seminar devoted to discovering how to bring excellence to the workplace. There were many others attending for the first time that night – most were cautiously optimistic about what was possible, curious about what they might learn. Eric came to the evening with a plan: Sit back and listen. He thought that would be the best way to approach the seminar since, to his way of thinking, he had nothing of value to offer. Thankfully, his plan failed. Here is what happened: As we looked out at the faces, we could tell that people were looking for many different things but we felt fairly certain that everyone had an interest in being more successful, productive and satisfied at work. We also knew that most people have internalized standards that they unknowingly compare themselves to and many fall short in their own estimation. So we posed a question: “What attributes do you think embody the Employee of the Year?” It was an exciting exploration. Many volunteered ideas – doing complete work with consistency, operating with passion, listening, being responsive to your colleagues and customers, as well as many other useful suggestions. Each attribute someone brought forward came to life as people passionately articulated how they felt and what they saw. Suddenly, a man in the front row stood up. “I’m not sure what my idea of Employee of...

March Garden Tips from Cynthia Brian by Cynthia Brian...

“That which surrounds you is within you.”~ Karl Schmidt After visiting the Yucatan Peninsula for a week at the end of February where I snorkeled and swam in underground cenotes (rivers) as well as the aqua waters of the Caribbean, I returned to a garden exploding in blooms. Bearded iris, tulips, anemones, freesia, cyclamen, calla lilies, oxalis, Chinese fringe, rosemary, ranunculus, cinerera, gladioli, plus hillsides of daffodils as well as fruit trees of Asian pear, peach, apricot, prune, and crabapple. As the wind blew, the air rained pear blossoms. The soothing smell of springtime permeated my nostrils. How lovely to come home to beauty. The recent insert in our water bill made me laugh with ways to use only thirty-five gallons a day. Besides the fact that they failed to recognize that most households contain more than one individual, they also completely overlooked water for gardens, indoor plants, and pets. Although my water conservation efforts have placed me in the top 20% of savers, the water company also recognized that 68% of my water usage is for landscaping. If only we had access to the water of those 6000 cenotes in the Yucatan! Many emails have arrived asking about more information on the Pearl’s Premium lawn seed. Since the ground is warming yet the heavens still shower us with rainfall, March is an opportune time to seed and re-seed your lawns. Since my November 4th, 2015 article about this award winning lawn seed, I’ve learned that new research indicates that the roots grow to twenty inches, making the grass, once established very drought resistant. The one draw back that I have discovered from my personal experience is that in our area, the birds do indeed like the seeds. Make sure to roll the seeds for...

What do Americans want in their next President? Mar09

What do Americans want in their next President?...

The 2016 race for the White House has raised many more questions about leadership than it has answered. What attributes do Americans want in their next President? Experience? Decisiveness? Honesty? And how much does likeability matter? Thus far, the primary debates have been riddled with more nasty accusations and counter- punches than we’d allow in a sporting event or divorce court, never mind at the average supper table. Yet, when it comes to the Presidential contenders, many Americans see these behaviors as strength, certainty and resolve. Frontal assaults reflect fearlessness. Demeaning comments, superiority. Interrupting and talking over each other, a sign of taking charge. Welcome to the new portrait of leadership. This isn’t the first time America has struggled with leadership and likeability. Some of the most successful helmsmen in history didn’t have personality traits we admired. No one would argue whether George Patton was one of the greatest generals to serve in the military, or, whether he was so brash, conceited and disagreeable even his superiors took pains to avoid him. Margaret Thatcher, Britain’s longest-serving Prime Minister of the 20th century, was enormously unpopular with the working class in spite of the fact that her economic policies saved the country from a catastrophic recession and record unemployment. Her cold, strict demeanor quickly earned her the nickname “The Iron Lady.” In modern times, business and government leaders like Larry Ellison, Dianne Feinstein, Mark Zuckerberg, Donald Rumsfeld and Eric Schmidt have been widely admired for their talent and success, but few, if any, would describe them as “likeable.” Which begs the question: what if, in addition to skill, these individuals had been likeable? Would they have achieved greater successes? What if Patton had had Douglas MacArthur’s ability to bring people together? What if Donald Rumsfeld...

How important is workplace atmosphere to a millennial? Mar09

How important is workplace atmosphere to a millennial?...

This post is a companion to the Voice America interview with Cam Marston to air on March 8, 2016. Cam is the President and Owner of Generational Insights and an expert on the Demographic Trends and Generational Bias Impacting Work & Sales. How important is workplace atmosphere to a millennial? Apparently it was important enough to at least one of them to blow off one of the premier employers in her desired profession. “My visit,” she concluded, “made me realize it was sterile journalism.” Gordon did not give examples of work produced by the Times that she considers sterile, but seemed more concerned with the newsroom environment, saying she knew she “wouldn’t fit in with the culture” in a place where she couldn’t “fully express my creativity and quirkiness.” She illustrated her point by noting that an internship coordinator at the Times may not have appreciated the “shooting stars and flying bats” on her portfolio. While Gen-Xers and Baby Boomers will laugh this off as a millennial living down to the stereotype (and wonder what kind of journalism student would show up to the New York Times with stars and bats drawn on her clips), we also must assume that Gordon isn’t alone. Finding a collaborative atmosphere and an outlet for their creative passions is important to millennials – and finding talented millennials is important to employers. So who should give? Should employers like the Times reconfigure their workplaces to cater to the desires of millennials like Gordon? Or should Gordon realize that not every office is going to feel like the campus newspaper? There’s no one right answer here, but my hunch is: perhaps a little of both. Comparing Financial Aid Offers Mar04

Comparing Financial Aid Offers...

It should be an easy thing to compare financial aid offers from different schools. But between loans, grants, merit scholarships, work study, and other different components, it can often feel like comparing apples to oranges. In this week’s show, we’ll take listeners through the best way to compare offers and decide which one is actually the best. In another segment in our High School Plan series, we’ll explore different course selections and extracurricular ideas for potential pre-dental students. For those students looking to get some hands-on experience while they’re in college, we’ll look more closely at co-op programs. Tune in every Thursday at 1pm PST to Getting In: A College Coach...

Hospitals can Kill you! by Nicholas St Jon...

But they don’t have to. I recently interviewed Dr. Betsy McCaughey Ph.D on “The Health Cure” radio show. She was a sheer delight to have on the show and I was extremely honored to have her and her knowledge is profound! Dr. McCaughey (pronounce McCoy) is the Founder and Chairman of The Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths (RID) in hospitals. The work she is doing is making hospitals much safer for you and I to be patients in as well as for visiting loved ones in. Her website is hospitalinfection.org and we discussed the biggest threat to our health while in the hospital, C. Diff. If you haven’t heard of the latest threat to humanity, you’re not alone. I’d just heard of it recently myself but had no idea how serious this threat is. Its what I call a “rogue bacteria” which is part of the superbug antibiotic resistant bacteria list that is continually growing. C. Diff is a bacteria that now infects 5% of patients that are in hospitals and kills over 25,000 people a year. The primary thing that makes this c. diff bacteria so profoundly different is that it enters the body through the mouth whereas MRSA enters through an opening in the skin like a surgical cut. Its infection is in the intestines and can destroy good bacteria and if left unchecked, destroy your intestines leading to death. I find it striking that the media and “authorities” were scaring us to death over Ebola which killed 11,300+ people over 12 months but you’ve heard NOTHING of a bacteria right here in the United States that kills over 25,000 people a year! That’s as I like to say, the BAD news. Thank God for people like Betsy McCaughey who brings us...

Going Deep ~ A semi-silent Meditation Retreat by Angela Blaha Mar03

Going Deep ~ A semi-silent Meditation Retreat by Angela Blaha...

The value of going into silence! I remember the first day I went into silence, it feels like it was yesterday.  I was filled with anticipation of going deep within, to experience silence like I had never experienced it before.  I was a bit nervous to go so deep within myself, that I actually made myself sick a few days before I was scheduled to leave for the event. I was a ball of emotions, none of which I could identify with.  It was as if they were new emotions, or old emotions that had a new layer to them.  I rarely get nervous, but I have to admit I was nervous about the silence.  Like you, I live in a very loud and noisy world. The nervousness continued upon arrival, as I was entering a place with new faces, not knowing any of the other people attending this silent event.  The thing I thought would be a saving paradigm was that we would be silent, so there was no room for small talk or getting to know people.  Just silence! Much to my surprise there was some sort of underlying knowingness with the other participants, like we had known each other for years.  There was no room for small talk as there was deep and expansive conversation to experience.  We all seemed to be on the same path to enlightenment or at least to understand ourselves better and the reasons we exist. What I learned from this experience was that I yearned for the silence, and it is now a regular part of my daily life.  I yearn for the moments of silence so I can explore an even deeper level of who I am.  My first experience was mind blowing to say...

Color Helps Heal Trauma by Paula Joyce Feb29

Color Helps Heal Trauma by Paula Joyce...

Trauma describes a wide range of experiences that include single occurrences as well as on-going incidents. Some examples are: traffic accidents, the sudden death of a loved one, all forms of abuse, natural disasters, medical disasters and war. The effects of trauma vary. Most psychologists believe that you can survive trauma and alleviate the symptoms. They do not, however, believe that people can truly heal from trauma, thrive and even experience what is now called posttraumatic growth. It turns out that some new approaches to healing trauma result in personal growth that is dramatic enough to warrant the descriptive title of transformation. People create positive change, develop a new identity and find new meaning in life. Their new found strength and wisdom gives them the tools they need to prevent and process future trauma. Please join us Thursday to learn how Emotional Transformation Therapy can do all this. Visit: ettia.org (International) ettcenter.com (Dallas and Bedford, TX). From a One Woman Show to a Multi-Business Enterprise by Marcia Zidle Feb29

From a One Woman Show to a Multi-Business Enterprise by Marcia Zidle...

How do you maximize operational efficiencies, hire the right people and make sure you are serving your customers well?  How do you avoid burning out as your grow your business? How do build a business that is here today and here tomorrow? The Answer Is: Systematize For Success. On this episode of The Business Edge my guest Johnette van Eeden, founder and CEO of Star Wellness has grown her business on the principle  “systematize for success!” As a serial entrepreneur, she advocates all key processes of every business, including hiring, training, sales, accounting, and operations, can and more importantly should be systematized.: Therefore, everyone knows where to go and what to do…they simply follow the system.  Key employees can leave for a few days without chaos.  New employees have a resource to turn to instead of having to ask someone how to do everything (or worse, just guess).  In fact, Johnette went on vacation for a month during the busiest time last year, and didn’t have to worry because she knew she had the systems and people in place to make it run smoothly. Listen to this Podcast and Learn: How she grew from a one woman show to multiple locations to now having a franchise operations; the challenge of growing too quickly and how Michael Gerber’s E-Myth book put her on the track to success; her systematized hiring process and the tools she uses to get the right people in the right seats on the bus; how she became a master time manager as her company took off and added multiple product lines and advice from a serial entrepreneur on the success factors for building a sustainable business. The key take away: Set goals for where you want to be, formulate a plan...

Fence Me In! by Cynthia Brian...

By Cynthia Brian “Good fences make good neighbors.” Robert Frost Growing up on a ranch we had all kinds of enclosures. Fences to keep the cattle in, fences to keep the deer out, coops for the chickens, hutches for the rabbits, paddocks for the horses, pens for the sheep, and extra corrals for the injured animals we’d rehabilitate before release. What we didn’t have were human fences. While traveling to the East Coast and the Southern states, I noticed a lack of fences between homes. Lawns rolled into one another, gardens meandered, play structures appeared to belong to no one or everyone. In the California sierras, the same mentality holds true for many homeowners. But in the cities and suburbs of California, strong fences create good neighbors, especially if you live near a house that reminds you of Miss Havisham’s ruined mansion in Charles Dickens, Great Expectations, albeit with abandoned cars on blocks, rusting washing machines, and a backyard piled high with trash. The sturdy redwood fence dividing your properties could be your sanity savior. Here in our neck of the woods we experience a different kind of problem. Deer! With few predators and plenty of open space deer have been multiplying exponentially. This is not good news for gardeners. Of all the correspondence I receive from readers, the majority of the questions concern these trespassing foragers. “What can I plant that deer won’t eat?” “How can I keep the deer from breaking my sprinkler systems?” “What can I do to keep the deer out of my garden?” Over the years I’ve written articles about our dear deer and after three decades of trying literally every trick suggested, I am convinced that there is only one answer. Build a fence! I decided to call several...

How You Can Become a Peak-Performing Person and Leader: Tackling Taboo Realities Like Sexual Violence and Tobacco Use Head-On by Hemda Mizrahi Feb26

How You Can Become a Peak-Performing Person and Leader: Tackling Taboo Realities Like Sexual Violence and Tobacco Use Head-On by...

Leadership and social change experts Peter Prichard and Sarah Beaulieu joined me on “Turn the Page” to discuss two taboo topics—tobacco use and sexual violence. In sharing compelling personal stories that galvanized their social change missions, Peter and Sarah demonstrate how truth-telling can empower you to become a peak-performing person and leader who chooses to make a difference Sarah and Peter extended their information sharing after the show to provide you with additional support and encouragement. SEXUAL VIOLENCE IS NOT JUST A WOMEN’S ISSUE. Sarah notes, “One challenge with sexual violence is that many people view it as a “women’s issue.” Sexual violence directly impacts about one out of four women AND one out of six men in the United States. You can learn more about the facts surrounding men and sexual violence at: http://theenlivenproject.com/convo-graphic-the-truth-about-men-and-sexual-violence/ OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOU TO CONTRIBUTE TO SOLUTIONS Sarah is working on a book to help men support survivors of sexual violence in their lives and become stronger champions for sexual violence. If you’d like to contribute your perspective to this book, please complete her men’s survey and invite your colleagues and friends to do the same She shares a few of the many practical ways that you can support stigmatized issues like sexual violence without re-vamping your company’s community relations efforts: follow an anti-sexual violence organization on social media; sponsor a table at a fundraising event; or provide skilled volunteer support to group that works directly with survivors. She also suggests exploring how sexual violence might intersect with issues that you or your employer already support, citing the following examples: “while childhood exposure to sexual violence can impact your physical and mental health (http://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/acestudy), few organizations that focus on heart disease, diabetes, or obesity view sexual violence prevention and...

DEATH OF THE CAMPAIGN BLUEPRINT by Rebecca Costa Feb24

DEATH OF THE CAMPAIGN BLUEPRINT by Rebecca Costa...

When it comes to political campaigns, the past used to be the best predictor of the future. But no more. Speaking on The Costa Report, political history buff and host of MSNBC’s Meet the Press Daily, Steve Kornacki, summed up the 2016 Presidential race, “New rules for politics are being written in real time right now. And finding out what those rules are is invigorating!” So what’s different about this year? As it stands today, a billionaire businessman who has never held elected office, who has offended women, Hispanics, and the Pope, offered no program specifics, and spent far fewer campaign dollars than his competitors, has managed to maintain a double-digit lead for ten months – causing every pundit and journalist to begrudgingly admit they were wrong about Trump.  They expected his run to be as short-lived as Giuliani or Gingrich.  And if the old rules still applied, it would have been.  But as Trump moved from state to state – violating every tenet that defines “political correctness” – his popularity grew.  The working class – once a Democratic stronghold – began switching teams.  As did soccer moms concerned with security, young people worried about job opportunities, and retirees who face entitlement cuts when the economy falters.  Kornacki observed, “Trump has been leading, on average, in national polls since July now. None of the candidates in 2012 – who were running against Romney – ever led for more than 3 weeks at a time …we’ve clearly established that he (Trump) is something very different in Republican politics, in American politics.”    Managing editor for the New York Times website, David Leonhardt agrees.  Leonhardt recently recanted his skepticism about Trump’s effectiveness, “We were fooled by history. Neither Mr. Cruz nor Mr. Trump resembles any candidate who has won...
