Dr.-Luh-Ketut-Suryani_142x130

Cheryl welcomes Dr. Luh Ketut Suryani, M.D., Ph.D. a renowned Balinese healer, highly acclaimed western-trained psychiatrist, and a leader in bridging indigenous Balinese knowledge and values with the western world.

Teen suicide is on the rise in Bali. Stress associated with economic problems, modernization, and shifting philosophies has led to increased suicidal tendencies among the young Balinese. Western approaches to suicide prevention have not been successful there. Dr. Luh Ketut Suryani, M.D., Ph.D of The Suryani Institute developed an approach to suicide prevention that is working in that culture: a combination of Western and modern treatments infused with rich Balinese cultural and social elements.

Founder and Chairman of Suryani Institute for Mental Health, and Professor of Psychiatry at Udayana University, much of Dr. Suryani’s work focuses on the challenges of the children of Bali, though these challenges exist with cultures around the world. Dr. Suryani has authored numerous books on Balinese culture and spiritual practices, hosts her own television show on women’s issues, offers weekly community meditation gatherings, and speaks about cultural issues impacting her beloved Bali.

Join Cheryl Esposito meeting with Dr. Suryani in Bali as she shares her insight into the growing problem the youth of Bali face as they try to blend the world of YouTube and social media with their culture and life in paradise.
