Cybersecurity — Thriving in a High-threat Environment: Five Key Tenants by Maureen Metcalf & Dr. Dale Meyerrose May23

Cybersecurity — Thriving in a High-threat Environment: Five Key Tenants by Maureen Metcalf & Dr. Dale Meyerrose...

This post reflects a collaboration between Dr. Dale Meyerrose, major general, U.S. Air Force (retired), president of the MeyerRose Group and Maureen Metcalf, founder and CEO of Metcalf & Associates, and is written in conjunction with an interview on VoiceAmerica aired on May 24, “Cybersecurity: Thriving in a High Threat Environment.” Dale sees “cyber” as much a language as the medium over which data flows. In turn, cybersecurity is about ensuring trust in virtual functions and services. One often thinks cybersecurity is the job of specialists working in an information technology (IT) services organization, or of analysts in the security shop. Yet, when something goes wrong, it cannot only affect the very health and reputation of an entire organization, but possibly its existence. Over the past five years, the headlines have been replete of examples of high-profile organizations and individuals who have had their data, records, and identity compromised by criminals, terrorists, governments, and “evil doers.” As a consequence, many have formed opinions based on impressions created by the media—many of those impressions may not be grounded in fact. So, what is the proper context? There’s a tendency to focus on the large number of compromised records in some of the more infamous cases, particularly involving retail and entertainment firms, and the U.S. government. Yet, these sensational cases aren’t necessarily the largest in numeric terms. We are familiar with these cases for reasons other than strictly the number of compromised records and/or identities. The publicity of these crises were likely for other reasons, such as participant notoriety, shock value, timing, potential liability, among other aspects. We tend to forget that cybersecurity issues exist in the context of the outside world and the human experience in general. Inserting “cyber,” or “e,” or “I” in front...

Executive Perspectives – Lessons That Drive Success by Maureen Metcalf May17

Executive Perspectives – Lessons That Drive Success by Maureen Metcalf...

This post focuses on lessons learned from several senior executive interviews on VoiceAmerica Radio. I want to thank everyone who was willing to participate; I have had the honor of talking to a range of highly accomplished executives from a variety of industries and backgrounds. Let’s start with an example of an employee whose experience mirrors of one of our top interviews: people drive your success. Susan walked into her new job and was delighted that on her first day, her intuition about accepting the position proved correct. She left a great job (on paper) to be part of a professional organization that would be a better fit. She’d been looking for a place where the leaders understood that taking care of their people caused the organization to actually be more efficient and effective. She’d had plenty of experience with organizations that gave lip service to employee engagement and becoming a best place to work, and yet, at the end of the day, she didn’t feel engaged. She felt harassed by ongoing assessments and pressure to deliver better scores rather than inspired by a true effort to improve the organization. Now she was the VP of Talent in an organization that genuinely treated people with respect. They recruited for mindset and offered ongoing training to ensure employees could meet the changing needs of the workplace. After doing the interviews, I wanted to see what themes emerged from the group and share with readers who may not have had the opportunity to listen to all interviews. Themes: 1. People differentiate your business and your ability to deliver on your unique brand as well as retain customers. Treat your people well and they will treat your clients well. Treat your people badly and they will be...

Bad Bosses: Are You One? by Maureen Metcalf & Mike Morrow-Fox May11

Bad Bosses: Are You One? by Maureen Metcalf & Mike Morrow-Fox...

This blog post is co-written by Mike Morrow-Fox and Maureen as a companion to the VoiceAmerica recording on Bad Bosses. Bill comes into the office. He is swamped by the sheer volume of work he needs to accomplish –  preparing for a high-visibility client meeting, meeting with his executive leadership, and consolidating information to create his monthly reports. On top of this, he has seven highly competent direct reports. He’s grateful that his team is so effective, because it means he doesn’t need to spend much time with them. He really likes his team and wishes he could do more mentoring, but for now, he needs to keep his head down and get his work done. As we read in the article, his approach is actually ineffective because he is not actively engaging them. In a January 2016 article published in the Gallup Business Journal, ‘Gallup has been tracking employee engagement in the U.S. since 2000. Though there have been some slight ebbs and flows, less than one-third of U.S. employees have been engaged in their jobs and workplaces during these 15 years. According to Gallup Daily tracking, 32% of employees in the U.S. are engaged — meaning they are involved in, enthusiastic about and committed to their work and workplace. Worldwide, only 13% of employees working for an organization are engaged.’ Bosses play a major role in employee engagement and disengagement. Engaged bosses drive engagement, while disengaged bosses drive disengagement and, even, active disruption. Let’s start with a definition. What is the difference between a leader and a boss? Leaders set the cultural tone and strategic vision; bosses are the employee’s conduit to the larger organization. We understand that there are some obvious characteristics that would make anyone a bad boss, like throwing...

PERFORMING OPTIMALLY UNDER PRESSURE by Hemda Mizrahi & Renita Kalhorn May09

PERFORMING OPTIMALLY UNDER PRESSURE by Hemda Mizrahi & Renita Kalhorn...

Leadership and performance training expert Renita Kalhorn, MBA, joined me on “Turn the Page” to discuss “How to get a Mental Six Pack.” Renita teaches entrepreneur CEOs and their teams, and Navy SEAL candidates the mental toughness skills that are essential to optimal performance under pressure. After the show, she elaborated on some of the core principles that underlay peak performance strategies, which relate to how we manage our thoughts and emotions. Renita shares: FIRST PRINCIPLE “Whatever we do now, we’ve “trained” ourselves to do through repetition. Changing our behavior takes retraining.” SECOND PRINCIPLE “Emotions are chemical reactions in our body, so we can become “addicted” to stress, anxiety, frustration, and other emotions, just like any chemical substance. We can continue to have the same emotional patterns or reactions, regardless of our circumstances, because we “crave” the emotional fix. Even if it’s not pleasant, it’s familiar and it reminds us of our identity.” THIRD PRINCIPLE “Going through our day without processing the emotions that come out of our thoughts/interactions with others, will keep us from being present and productive. It’s like driving with the parking brake on.” Renita offers strategies through which you can retrain yourself to be more productive: UNRAVELING FROM THE “ADDICTION” OF CHRONIC STRESS “One client was a rock star in business development, bringing in $25M deals. She had a lot of stress and anxiety around maintaining a high level of performance and it was affecting her health and relationships. No matter what the circumstances were, there was always something to be anxious about: an upcoming negotiation, getting a promotion, getting a bonus, a new deal. She created a strategy to be more mindful (meditation, petting her cat, gratitude journal) and, on particularly stressful days, brought PRESENT MOMENT AWARENESS by simply...

REBOOT YOUR LIFE AT 60+: START PLANNING FOR YOUR NEXT CHAPTER by Hemda Mizrahi & Jaye Smith...

Jaye Smith, M.A., educator, author, consultant, coach, and Co-founding Partner of Reboot Partners, joined me on “Turn the Page” to provide guidance on how you can “Reboot Your Life at 60+” and plan for your next chapter. Listen to our conversation to find out about some the universal fears and struggles that people over 60 share around the world, and how you can look toward your future with greater confidence and ease. Jaye spoke with me after the show to share exercises that have supported thousands of “Reboot Partner’s” readers and retreat participants in approaching their lives with a fresh perspective. Here are three to get you started: “TAKING LITTLE RISKS” “A number of us get stuck in doing things the same old way. That thinking and approach makes it hard to reinvent ourselves as we plan for a new chapter in our lives. In order to have a new experience, we need to find ways to OPEN UP OUR PERSPECTIVE. When needing a breakthrough or a shift in perspective, we recommend trying out this exercise. We call it “Taking Little Risks.” What little risks can you take to begin to have new eyes about your day-day life and long-term view? Here are some ideas: identify FIVE new ways to travel to and from work, FIVE new kinds of food you have not tried, and FIVE activities you’ve always wanted to try. You get the idea. Try new things that draw you out of your comfort zone. This will help you to release old habits, see things differently, and exercise your brain!” VISIONING: LOOKING BACK FROM THE VIEW YOUR 100TH BIRTHDAY “We talked a lot about visioning and imagining your ideal future. Another way to uncover some of those dreams and goals from another angle...

Fresh Ideas in the Garden...

Cynthia Brian’s Gardening Guide for May Spring Forward with Fresh Ideas By Cynthia Brian “Now every field is clothed with grass, and every tree with leaves; now the woods put forth their blossoms, and the year assumes its gay attire.” ~Virgil With all the rain we’ve enjoyed this season, spring has birthed the most spectacular garden displays experienced in years.  The air is fragrant with the scent of jasmine, emerald green hills are decorated with golden poppies, and pretty peonies populate our plots.  Songbirds chirp as they feather their nests, butterflies flit from blossom to bloom, lady beetles and bees are busy with their business. A lovely turkey feather poked out from under my fig bush by my living room window. When I went to grab it, I realized it was attached to a wild hen sitting on eggs! She wasn’t even startled and I’ve continued to enjoy watching her daily. Our natural world has found its equilibrium. My Pearl’s Premium lawn is finally looking lush and full. The secret was constant re-seeding, daily moisture, and netting to keep the birds at bay. This summer will tell how drought resistant the grass is. One thing is for certain, it has definitely forced out weeds and dandelions. Whereas I used to pick at least a hundred dandelions a day to feed the quail, I am now down to half a dozen or even less. Thus far I am impressed with this grass seed and will keep you posted as the dry weather sets in. (www.pearlspremium.com) I’ve been busy planting seeds one by one, a very tedious task, as I’m not one to start my seedlings indoors. Instead I use an egg carton and pour the various seeds I want to plant into the egg holders,...

Stanley Teitelbaum, Ph.D., joined me on “Turn the Page” to share his guidance on “Overcoming Self-Defeating Patterns in Stock Market Investing.” Dr. Teitelbaum has been a practicing clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst for over 35 years. As a member of the Financial Therapy Association, he collaborates with wealth managers, financial advisors, and their clients to help them optimize financial outcomes. He suggests that you can build a personal investment portfolio that outperforms your brokerage accounts IF you overcome your self-defeating investment patterns and follow basic principles based on a better understanding of stock market performance. Listen to my conversation with Dr. Teitelbaum to learn about distinguishing reality from illusion in stock market investing, and how to overcome common self-defeating patterns and other wealth destroying roadblocks. Dr. Teitelbaum draws on over three decades of his own experience with both brokerage accounts and personal investing in sharing his advice. He spoke with me after the show to expand on his tips: 1) “Avoidance of shame is one of the biggest emotional obstacles to successful stock market investing, which prompts people to hold on to losing investments for too long.  Sometimes we make a stock pick that we have reasons to believe will be a sure winner, and surprisingly it turns sour.  Recognize that no investor bats .1000, but by maintaining a strategy of taking small losses you can be a winner.” 2) “It is helpful to be aware of the defense mechanisms of denial, avoidance, rationalization, and self-deception that investors utilize to perpetuate self- defeating patterns.  Develop a checklist of potential pitfalls when you see yourself at risk for repeating poor investment decisions like buying high and selling low.” 3) “Be aware of the tendency to overestimate your level of risk tolerance, especially during a bull market when...

HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED IN YOUR JOB SEARCH: TIPS FROM “YOUR ONE-MINUTE JOB FINDING COACH” by Hemda Mizrahi & Randy Place May04

HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED IN YOUR JOB SEARCH: TIPS FROM “YOUR ONE-MINUTE JOB FINDING COACH” by Hemda Mizrahi & Randy...

“Motivation is the key to your success,” says career counselor Randy Place in his book, Your One-Minute Job Finding Coach. “Anyone who has tried and failed and then learned and mastered a sport, a musical instrument, or a field of study knows that failures are the foundation for success.” The reason you kept on keeping on? You were motivated to do it.” Randy expands on these insights by stating that a lack of motivation can lead to procrastination, adding, “a reason you might lack motivation is that you have no GOAL for your search. Without a specific job or career target, you’ll confuse the job marketplace. If you’re unsure about a goal, it’s okay to have several targets. Then you’ll conduct your job campaign in three main buckets as a way to uncover the right target for you.” Given the necessary role of motivation in both initiating and sustaining a productive job finding campaign, Randy offers FIVE TIPS FOR GETTING AND STAYING MOTIVATED: LOVE WHAT YOU DO. Loving what you do and doing what you love gives your life a meaning and a purpose. People who love what they do have enthusiasm, a key selling point in interviews. Several studies show that happy campers earn more money, have higher productivity rates, and are more motivated to succeed. AVOID BEING OVERWHELMED. Feeling unmotivated can be the result of being swamped. The antidote to feeling overwhelmed is to be very specific when writing tasks on your to do list. For example, by listing “write the first draft of my SUMMARY” rather than “write my RESUME,” you’ve given yourself a task that’s doable today. NARROW YOUR FOCUS. Not only should you break tasks down into achievable portions, but also narrow your focus to accomplish just five things...

Meet Tamara and Susan: Believers in How Banking Can and Should Go Beyond the Balance Sheet by Linda Ryan May03

Meet Tamara and Susan: Believers in How Banking Can and Should Go Beyond the Balance Sheet by Linda Ryan...

With the launch of the Building Banking on Values, a new VoiceAmerica radio series I’m hosting that goes behind the scenes to tell the stories of the people, passion and positivity within the values-based banking and financing sector; I thought to introduce you to some of our guests. Listen to the show right now. Meet Tamara Vrooman, President and CEO (Vancity), and Believer in How Banking Should Build the Well-being of People, Planet and Places.  As President & Chief Executive Officer of Vancity, Canada’s largest community credit union, Tamara Vrooman believes that banking has a vital role in developing a healthy society—building the well-being of people and, at the same time, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the communities in which they live and work. This summarises Vancity’s vision of redefining wealth. Tamara views the economy as much more than what is written on a balance sheet; it includes the social and natural economies in which we all live. Understanding the interdependence of these three means that Vancity takes a very different approach to banking, ensuring its products, services and advice deliver financial, social and environmental results for the more than 500,000 members it serves. As a financial co-operative, Vancity is ideally suited to operate in an economy that is ever changing because it is through its close connection with members that Vancity sees what is required to meet their changing needs. This ‘member-led innovation’ guides Vancity in its business strategies. Under Tamara’s leadership, Vancity has gained international recognition for its values-based banking model. Vancity was the first Canadian financial institution invited to join the Global Alliance for Banking on Values, an independent network of the world’s leading sustainable banks and banking cooperatives. In 2014, Pope Francis asked Tamara to participate in a Vatican Summit entitled The...

CIO Tomorrow – Managing Your End-Users’ Appetite for Disruption Apr29

CIO Tomorrow – Managing Your End-Users’ Appetite for Disruption...

The following post was written by Thai Lee as part of the Columbus Business First’s CIO Tomorrow Conference. Ms. Lee is one of the featured speakers in the Voice America Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations interview aired on April 26, 2016. As “disruption” challenges “cloud” for IT buzzword supremacy, line-of-business owners (and the end-users they manage) are hungry to deploy new “disruptive” technologies in the workplace. While CIOs are eager to support the innovation that follows disruption, most are well aware that longtime, traditional IT partners still play an irreplaceable role in keeping their network and infrastructure available and secure. Today’s CIO works in the middle of legacy IT and user-driven disruptive technology. Working in the IT channel since 1989, SHI was born and lives in the “middle.” We currently help over 17,000 IT organizations understand all the information they need to quickly evaluate, acquire and deploy traditional, disruptive and hybrid IT solutions that meet their technical, security and business needs. Based on that experience, here are three things we have found effective IT organization do to support end-user demand of disruptive technologies: – Manage IT Assets – all the time. IT Asset Management: it’s not just for audits anymore! Any business case for deploying disruptive technology must survive a direct comparison to both your install base and your existing volume licensing entitlements. Despite their enthusiasm to roll out a new SaaS application, line-of-business owners (Marketing, Accounting, Sales) are rarely aware of an existing contract or “shelfware” that can exist elsewhere in enterprise and possibly be re-deployed to their group. An effective IT asset management program can empower IT staffers to immediately respond with an alternative solution that may make better business sense or provide tangible cost-savings. – Normalization of consumption billing. Utilizing today’s...

Heal Your Body With Your Voice by Paula Joyce Apr27

Heal Your Body With Your Voice by Paula Joyce...

We all know the power of voice. Some voices are so beautiful that they can transport us, uplift our moods or bring us to tears. But voice is even more than we think it is. AT&T said that BioAcoustics is the medicine of the future. BioAcoustics Voice Spectral Analysis is a new process that can detect hidden or underlying stresses in the body that are expressed as disease. It can identify toxins, pathogens and nutritional supplements that are too low or too high. Vocal print can even be used to match the most compatible treatment remedy to each client. The introduction of the proper low frequency sound to the body, indicated through voice analysis, has been shown to control: pain, body temperature, heart rhythm, and blood pressure. It has also been shown to regenerate body tissue, and alleviate the symptoms of many diseases; in some cases, even those considered to be incurable by Western medicine. Please join us Thursday to learn more about this amazing healing process from its founder....

HOW HOLISTIC VETERINARY CARE CAN OPTIMIZE YOUR PET’S MOBILITY, LIFESPAN, AND QUALITY OF LIFE! by Hemda Mizrahi and Dr. Jill Elliot Apr27

HOW HOLISTIC VETERINARY CARE CAN OPTIMIZE YOUR PET’S MOBILITY, LIFESPAN, AND QUALITY OF LIFE! by Hemda Mizrahi and Dr. Jill...

Holistic veterinarian Jill Elliot, DVM, joined me on “Turn the Page” to share her recommendations on a vaccination protocol for cats and dogs. She also spoke about treatment approaches that have restored mobility in pets with musculoskeletal issues, and increased the lifespan of animals who have cancer. Listen to our conversation to hear about the remarkable successes she described, recognizing that, while many of Dr. Elliot’s patients have experienced notable quality of life improvements through her integration of conventional and holistic protocols, each pet’s response is unique. With the underlying objective of helping to facilitate the optimal wellbeing of your pets, Dr. Elliot provided the following additional guidance after the show. VACCINATION AND OPTIMIZING YOUR PET’S WELLBEING “Vaccinations are essential to protect your animal’s long term health and wellbeing. Core vaccination protocols change depending on your pet’s environment and routine or lifestyle. During your first vet visit with a new cat or dog, it’s important to discuss the veterinarian’s philosophy about vaccines and wellness care in general. If you feel pressured to vaccinate, or do anything else you don’t agree with, don’t be afraid to get a second opinion from another veterinarian. Try to find a vet office where you know you will be able to see the same veterinarian for every visit. In many large practices you might see a different vet each time, depending on their work and vacation schedules. Each vet may have a different philosophy, which can create confusion for you and your pet! Be open to new ideas and treatments. Veterinary medicine is constantly evolving. When there is a problem with your pet, in addition to discussing it with your veterinarian, you might ask your friends and neighbors what they do in similar situations. Many of my referrals come from...

The Gift of Rejection with Mary Norris by Cynthia Brian...

Every week, Express Yourself!™ will bring you a stimulating program based on a chapter from our award winning book Be the Star You Are!® for Teens. The Gift of Rejection “You’re too tall, you’re too short, you’re too pretty, you’re too ugly, you’re too young, you’re too old, your hair is too blonde, your hair isn’t blonde enough, your eyes are too blue, your eyes need to be brown, you have too much experience, you’re not experienced enough.”  No matter who you are, you will face rejection in life so it’s time to embrace it and move forward. Asya Gonzalex hosts the program beginning with chapter, The Gift of Rejection” by Cynthia Brian from the book Be the Star You Are!® for Teens followed by a lively conversation with The New Yorker copy editor, Mary Norris.  Norris expertly guides readers through the most common and confusing grammatical issues in her book, Between You and Me, Confessions of a Comma Queen. She reveals her rejections throughout her career and why it’s important to keep on keeping on. An informative and fun interaction with two women who love words and repel rejection. Bio Mary Norris Mary Norris began her professional career as a foot checker—dutifully checking patrons’ toes for athlete’s foot as they entered a Cleveland city pool—before working at a costume company and driving a milk truck. Humble beginnings for a woman who would come to spend more than three decades as a copy editor (or “prose goddess”) at The New Yorker, where she’s worked with such celebrated writers as Philip Roth, Pauline Kael, and George Saunders. Norris’s love of language, and her wish to help “all of you who want to feel better about your grammar,” led her to write BETWEEN YOU & ME:...

CIO Tomorrow – Leadership is About Results that Matter Apr26

CIO Tomorrow – Leadership is About Results that Matter...

The following post was written by Dr. Dale Meyerrose as part of the Columbus Business First’s CIO Tomorrow Conference. Dr. Meyerrose is one of the featured speakers in the Voice America Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations interview aired on April 26, 2016. If you were to take a “professional selfie,” what would you see?  What would others see?  How would the perceptions of each correlate—or not? Many of us in the technology business built reputations on our ability to keep the IT running, perform miracles on shoe-string budgets, manage IT projects, understand enterprises and processes, and respond to emergencies.  Our view of that selfie would likely reflect pride in our technical acumen and ability to deliver on many things.  Important, yes.  But in the macro-scheme of business, do those things really matter?  Do they earn you a seat at the decision tables within your respective organizations?  Do they compel the Board of Directors to seek you counsel?  The evidence over many years, lo decades, is clear—they don’t! Why don’t others, looking at that same selfie, see you as necessary for setting corporate strategy?  Linked with company performance and customer satisfaction?  Value your contributions as cultivating opportunities and revenue, vice as a cost center to be minimized?  A crucial player in the “big” decisions over the course of time?  Hmmm. In my view, the reason is that many CIOs (and CSOs and CISOs for that matter) don’t move beyond the “plumbing” of their younger years.  Make no mistake, the plumbing has to work and work well.  However, the skills that made us good technicians and program managers early in our career, don’t translate into the talent needed to lead complex organizations in today’s demanding business world.  Consequently, I believe it critical for CIOs to differentiate...

Vision: The Metaphysical and You by Marie Jackson...

In this broadcast of Time Share, Marie and her regular contributor Paul Armitage tackle the elusive issue of seeing beyond the obvious. What we recognize as “real” isn’t real at all in this dimension of opposites, and our view of the glass as half-full or half-empty changes once we realize there’s no glass. Paul’s extensive understanding of “SETH” material, and his ability to put this esoteric knowledge to work in daily living, makes him a spiritual teacher with solid footing in both worlds: the obvious and the hidden....

Give Yourself Permission to Live Your Vision by Marie Jackson...

Listen in as Priya and Marie discuss the topic of Vision. Our view of the glass as half full or half empty changes once we realize there is no glass. There are no limits on what we can do because the truth of who we are is limitless and waiting. By helping us look at all sides and all choices, Priya will help us identify opportunities that work for everyone involved. We have been accustomed to seeing each other as separate – there’s a “you” and a “me” – how do we make choices to keep us all whole and growing without seeing it all as a zero sum game?...

Take Care of Your Trees and They’ll Take Care of You! by Cynthia Brian...

By Cynthia Brian “Trees are poems the earth writes upon the sky” Kahlil Gibran It was a glorious sunny day, almost mocking the tragedy that was to come. As my grandfather mowed his lawn – something he’d done many times before – the limb of a diseased elm tree came crashing down on him. He was killed instantly. I write this week’s article as a cautionary tale. My grandfather knew the tree was diseased, but the city he lived in had not yet issued the permits needed to remove it. With this tragedy always in my heart, I am forever diligent in inspecting my trees. With this tragedy always in my heart, I am forever diligent in inspecting my trees. Trees are the life source of our world, offering so much for so little. Trees clean our air, provide shade, offer oxygen, filter run off drainage, and cool the air. Without trees, many species of birds, squirrels, bees, and other wildlife would not have habitat. Trees beautify a neighborhood, conserve energy in our homes, bear fruit, and offer climbing structures for adventurous children. Trees are harvested to make furniture, paper products, and firewood. Sitting next to a tree recalibrates our bodily energy. Property values are higher in residential areas with mature trees. Trees are indeed poems written in the sky. This past year moss began to form on the branches of the gigantic cottonwood tree that had voluntarily seeded itself in my front yard. Over the winter, mistletoe dangled from the heights, ivy strangled the trunk, and giant ugly mushrooms sprouted along the base. While other trees on the property had leaves unfurling when the vernal equinox approached, my cottonwood remained haunted. Over the years, Advance Tree Service had delivered free wood chips to...

Know and Understand the United Nation’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals by Luis Vicente Garcia Apr22

Know and Understand the United Nation’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals by Luis Vicente Garcia...

The United Nations launched an incredible set of GOALS in 2015 called the Sustainable Development Goals or SDG’s. They are a set of world changing goals on very important areas for humanity that include, promotion, knowledge of important issues and a series of activities that will make the world a better place. Knowing these goals and understanding them is crucial and has many important implications for our future growth and development; but for me, it is more important to know what we as individuals, companies and institutions can do to promote and help achieve these important goals. It needs to start someplace and there is no better place than here on the radio show ‘Performing at Your Best: Mindset Evolution with Luis Vicente Garcia‘. Learning the SDG’s and understanding what we need to do in order to work together towards achieving them by the set date of 2030 is now of key importance. MANAGING INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE: THE TROUBLE WITH ADDED SUGAR by Hemda Mizrahi and Colleen Webb Apr21

MANAGING INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE: THE TROUBLE WITH ADDED SUGAR by Hemda Mizrahi and Colleen Webb...

Colleen Webb, MS. RDN, CLT, joined me on “Turn the Page” to share how food and nutrition can positively impact your ability to manage Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). IBD primarily includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Our conversation reveals how your dietary choices can enable you to manage this potentially debilitating condition. Colleen expands upon the guidance that she provided during the show by discussing the impact of ADDED SUGAR on your symptoms and state of health. Her suggestions offer benefits for overall health, regardless of whether or not you have active IBD. THE TROUBLE WITH “ADDED SUGAR” Colleen states, “Added sugar includes sugars and syrups added to foods during processing, preparation, and at the table. It does not include sugar naturally occurring in whole fruit or milk. Added sugar goes by many names, including high fructose corn syrup, agave, honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar, and evaporated cane juice. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a “healthy” sugar. Most of us are aware of the obvious sources of added sugar, such as sugar-sweetened beverages, cookies, cakes, and candy. Given that SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE “HEALTHY” FOODS MAY CONTAIN ADDED SUGAR, be sure to check nutrition labels. For example, nut butters may contain evaporated cane syrup or other sugars. Flavored yogurts, granola bars, store-bought smoothies, and cereals (even organic!) often have more added sugar than a serving of cookies! Most of us are consuming way too much added sugar, and studies have shown that people with active IBD consume even more added sugar than people without active IBD. The reality is that EXCESSIVE INTAKE OF ADDED SUGAR IS LINKED TO INFLAMMATION, DYSBIOSIS, AND A VARIETY OF CHRONIC DISEASES. Sugary foods and drinks can lead to GI upset, especially diarrhea, bloating, gas, and nausea.” COLLEEN’S RECOMMENDATIONS...

Mergers and acquisitions: 5 Key Drivers to Value Realization by Maureen Metcalf Apr20

Mergers and acquisitions: 5 Key Drivers to Value Realization by Maureen Metcalf...

Today’s post is a collaboration between Maureen Metcalf, Carla Morelli and Laura Hult focusing on mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and identifying key factors that drive success and failure. The authors are seasoned veterans who have participated in many transactions and seen similar themes. This post and its companion VoiceAmerica interview provide insights and make recommendations to improve the probability of success for your next transaction, whether you are acquiring, selling or involved in the integration. Research Indicates that Mergers and Acquisitions Often Fail to Deliver Desired Results The Financial Times Press’ A Comprehensive Guide to Mergers & Acquisitions: Managing the Critical Success Factors Across Every Stage of the M&A Process says that though studies have historically set the rate of M&A failure at 50 percent or more, recent years have found it to be as high as 83 percent. One might conclude that executives and boards would eschew M&A as a way to achieve growth and profitability in favor of less risky alternatives, but that has not been the case. Despite the warning signs, the number and dollar value of transactions has increased every year for the last 20 years. Failure Results from Management’s Lack of Knowledge or Unwillingness to Face Facts “The primary reasons for failures [are] related to the fact that it is easy to buy but hard to perform an M&A. In general, many mergers and acquisitions are characterized by the lack of planning, limited synergies, differences in the management/organizational/international culture, negotiation mistakes, and difficulties in the implementation of the strategy following the choice of an incorrect integration approach on the part of the merging organizations after the agreement is signed. Most failure factors indicate a lack of knowledge among senior managers for the management tools that enable coping with the...

Cheryl Esposito welcomes Peter Wrycza, founder of the Nirarta Centre for Living Awareness in Bali. Peter says: “In 1995 I stood in a grove of clove trees overlooking a river in a serene valley between the sea and the mountains and realized that this was my moment of choice. I could stick with my familiar work and territory in Europe. The Empty Chair Around the Holiday Table by Rabbi Mel Glazer...

THE EMPTY CHAIR AT THE HOLIDAY TABLE The festive holiday tables were filled once with the loved ones who have been a part of our holiday meals for as long as we can remember.  Some were our grandparents, some our parents, some spouses and siblings, and some, our beloved children.  Last year, they were sitting right there in “their” chairs, next to us, laughing and celebrating.  How should we respond to the empty chairs, to the emptiness that fills our hearts with such sadness?  Holidays are supposed to be such a time of joy, but how can we be joyful without them?  Their chairs are empty, and our hearts are filled with heaviness.  What do we do? We have lost something profound, and we must realize it and verbalize it.  We have lost our loved ones, those who have taught us, raised us, and been our role models and teachers.  They are gone, we are left to go on without them, and it hurts.  They were connected to our lives for so long, and now, suddenly, they’re not here.  A part of them still lives inside us. And we have lost even more.  We have lost the order and the familiarity of sitting down together, in the very same seats that we sat in last year at this time.  We felt safe and comfortable, everyone was in their correct chair, all was right with the world.  But now, the order is all wrong.  The seating is different, because different people are sitting in those chairs.  When our loved ones die – or divorce out of the family – we are adrift, without rudders to guide us.  Not only do we miss them, but we miss the certainty of the familiar.  Who will sit in...

Bad Bosses: Are You One? by Maureen Metcalf Apr14

Bad Bosses: Are You One? by Maureen Metcalf...
