Cheryl welcomes Dr. Luh Ketut Suryani, M.D., Ph.D. a renowned Balinese healer, highly acclaimed western-trained psychiatrist, and a leader in bridging indigenous Balinese knowledge and values with the western world. The Ghosts of Christmas Past: How Retailers Can Avoid a Repeat of 2015’s Challenging Holiday Season – Part 2 What to Do Now Jul21

The Ghosts of Christmas Past: How Retailers Can Avoid a Repeat of 2015’s Challenging Holiday Season – Part 2 What...

This post is written by David S. DuBose, Director of Supply Chain Solutions, Sedlak This three-part series explores a number of near-term and long-term moves retailers can make to eliminate or minimize holiday season fulfillment headaches and ensure their supply chain is up to the task. In part one of the series, we identified the issues retailers faced during the holiday season of 2015. Specifically, retailers were unequipped to handle the surge in online sales and a prolonged holiday shopping season. In this second section of the series, we detail the specific actions retailers should take now to improve their operative efficiency and achieve success. Retailers should start by analyzing the 2015 season’s volumes to understand where things broke down. Two dimensions, in particular, are important to explore: 1. One is product flow: How does merchandise flow through the network? What are the routings? How does it get from factories through the distribution network—and how does this add to or limit flexibility? 2. The other is capacity: What are the capacity and flexibility of the different nodes in the network—the central DC, regional DCs, and any consolidation points or pooled distribution points? Did carriers and suppliers provide sufficient capacity? Other important capacity levers to analyze include pick faces, throughput, parking, storage areas, staging, and sorters/conveyors. Ideally, this analysis should be done at the SKU level (or, at minimum, the product group level) so a retailer can fully understand the amount of space needed in the DC for each item’s slot. Such insights can indicate whether the projected product flow for the upcoming season will overwhelm the DC’s ability to store and fulfill product. In some cases, spreadsheets will do the trick. But for a growing number of retailers whose network complexity has mushroomed, more...

CASTING YOURSELF AS THE HERO OR HEROINE OF YOUR LIFE STORY by Hemda Mizrahi and Nicole Cutts Jul20

CASTING YOURSELF AS THE HERO OR HEROINE OF YOUR LIFE STORY by Hemda Mizrahi and Nicole Cutts...

Success Coach and Clinical Psychologist Nicole Cutts, Ph.D., joined me on “Turn the Page” to discuss the benefits of seeing your life as a hero or heroine’s quest, and how to clarify and achieve your vision of success. Dr. Cutts is the author of “The Adventures of Isabelle Book I: The Embryo Goddess and the Morpho,” a heroine’s quest adventure novel with a purpose. CASTING YOURSELF AS THE HERO OR HEROINE OF YOUR LIFE STORY Dr. Cutts states, “Have you thought about how much easier your life would be if you were a super hero? I know I have. Think of all the great super hero powers there are! Flight, invisibility, extraordinary strength, and one of my favorites, the ability to breath under water like Aquaman. Although it’s not realistic for humans to be super heros, we can all be heros or heroines if we choose to be. While being a heroine does not come with super powers, it does come with special abilities and great advantages. Even if your life does not become a literary work, you are writing your own life story, so why not cast yourself as a heroine or hero of this story?” YOU AND YOUR VISION: A COSMIC MATCHMAKING PROCESS! She shares, “A VISION is an idea, state of being or concept that you have regarding what you “want” in your life, or what you want your life to be. This phenomenon has been referred to by other terms, such as dreams, callings or aspirations, to name a few.  Human beings experience feelings of want, longing or desire toward a vision. I view the union of a vision and a person as a COSMIC MATCHMAKING process! My Vision Realization Continuum (VRC) model asserts that both you and the vision...

Building Leadership Success- Using Assessment Results to Increase Effectiveness by Maureen Metcalf Jul20

Building Leadership Success- Using Assessment Results to Increase Effectiveness by Maureen Metcalf...

This blog is a companion to the interview series with Christopher and Sheila Cooke on the VoiceAmerica Business Leadership show “Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations.” This four-part series, “Leaders Building Self-Awareness by Stepping Through the Worldview Membrane: Learning to Engage Your Organization,” begins July 12. The second interview is a conversation that talks about spotting the patterns, talking to two accomplished leaders who took the LeaderView Assessment about their results and how to interpret them to build on their success. This conversation includes a discussion on how their specific data helps them discover their leadership strengths and biases. As we listen to the leaders, Carla and Jim talk about their development goals, I wanted to provide companion information to leaders who are following along. If you take the LeaderView Assessment, you will receive an interpretation manual as part of the package. Following is the development process we use in the Innovative Leadership Fieldbook and Workbook series. Research since the late 1970’s has shown that such biases are actually the basis of your leadership strengths. Through a process of assessment and self-discovery, leaders build self-awareness, learn what it means to step through the worldview membrane, and learn how to dramatically increase engagement in their organizations. After taking the LeaderView Assessment, and others you might find valuable such as the Metcalf & Associates assessments for resilience and innovative leadership, along with integrating information from other sources such as performance appraisals it is time to synthesize what you have learned about yourself. We recommend using a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats worksheet (SWOT) shown below. We invite you to complete your own SWOT analysis. Keep in mind that your strengths and weaknesses tie back to your vision for yourself from last week’s post. We are very excited...

If You Get Upset Try Saying Yes! by Ariel & Shya Kane Jul18

If You Get Upset Try Saying Yes! by Ariel & Shya Kane...

If You Get Upset Try Saying Yes! an excerpt from Practical Enlightenment by Ariel & Shya Kane People often erroneously think that once they wakeup, transform, have an enlightening event or series of events that they will never get upset again. There is also a misconception that years of looking at your life buys you something and that you should have permanent relief from getting disturbed. Getting upset is not a failing, but to the mind that wishes to “get somewhere,” the mind that wishes to achieve enlightenment, it is. Have you ever said to yourself: I thought I was over that already I don’t like being upset I hate this I don’t wanna be upset Those thoughts are all about resisting this moment of now and being a No to how your life is showing up. Most of us have the idea that enlightenment and transformation will save us from the domination of our lives. We think that if we become enlightened we’ll have power over sickness, fatigue and getting upset. So we strive to calm our minds, quiet the voice in our heads and gain control over our environment. Here is the good news and the bad news: You have no control over how life shows up. It’s bad news if you’re trying to be in control because life doesn’t really care what you want. The good news is that you can discover how to be a Yes to how your life is unfolding in the moment and then miraculously, disturbing forces cease to disturb. The paradox is that you have no control, yet when you are a Yes to your life, you have ultimate control because what is happening becomes your choice. But you can’t do being a Yes in order...

DIGITAL MARKETING TIPS FOR ENTREPRENEURS AND SMALL BUSINESSES by Hemda Mizrahi and Doug Motel...

SEO and Social Media Coach Doug Motel, Founder of Site Optimized joined me on “Turn the Page” to discuss how to build brand recognition and attract qualified traffic to your website. Our conversation focused on resources that the Internet offers FREE OF CHARGE to improve SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION. Listen on demand to learn more. As a bonus after the show, Doug shared insights on COMMON MISTAKES that entrepreneurs and small business owners make in their marketing efforts: POOR QUALITY PROFILE PICTURES ON SOCIAL MEDIA “If your logo has an image of your building and the company sign, chances are it will not work well as a profile picture on Facebook or other social media platforms. The reason? When you are posting on your feed, or contributing to a conversation on someone else’s feed, your photo is resized to a very small square, possibly as tiny as 50 x 50 pixels (about 0.5 inches x 0.5 inches). No matter how much you love your business card logo, verify that it is legible when reduced to a small square before using it on social media.” GO BEYOND POSTING MARKETING-RELATED UPDATES: SHARE COMPELLING CONTENT THAT YOUR TARGET MARKET WILL LOVE “Being viewed as a valuable resource and attracting followers to your social media sites requires that you share great curated content, as well your own content. Curated content includes press, articles, blogs, or videos that your audience really needs to see. If your followers can count on YOU to be the clearinghouse for important information, they will be happy to consider your other (more mercenary) updates as well.” PROVIDE A CALL TO ACTION “If you are going to direct people to your website (which I recommend highly) or other places where your original content is sitting, suggest that they...

Hot, Hot, Hot by Cynthia Brian...

By Cynthia Brian “There shall be eternal summer in the grateful heart.” ~ Celia Thaxter When it’s hot outside, I want to be in the garden.  I find it challenging to sit in my office writing articles or producing radio shows when nature beckons me to be nurturing the earth. In summer I spend several hours of every single day digging in the dirt whether it’s early in the morning or after dusk because my chores are never finished.  My gardening wardrobe usually consists of my bathing suit and shorts allowing me a quick cool down with a spray from the garden hose.  As my daughter was working in her garden in her bikini she telephoned to declare that she was carrying on our family tradition. “I realize I come from a long line of bikini gardeners, “ she giggled.  I thought of titling my next gardening book, The Bikini Gardener, but then perhaps readers would expect to see beautiful bikini clad bodies instead of gorgeous gardens. I promise not to be photographed! Baby, it’s hot outside and we gardeners have work to do.  We have to be water conscious, yet we see the bare spots in our landscape and yearn to make our personal paradise a more beautiful place. What are our options? Planting annuals and perennials offer the answers to filling in those areas that just never seem to seed well.  Between the turkeys, deer, and raccoons, our landscapes have many hurdles to overcome and I’m determined to continue to find ways to succeed. Here are a few of my favorite recommendations for adding sparkle, individuality, and excitement without the extra water and work this season. ⎫ Sun loving vinca (Catharanthus roseus) crave six hours of sunlight a day and do well...

The Ghosts of Christmas Past: How Retailers Can Avoid a Repeat of 2015’s Challenging Holiday Season Part 1 – The Challenges of 2015 Jul14

The Ghosts of Christmas Past: How Retailers Can Avoid a Repeat of 2015’s Challenging Holiday Season Part 1 – The...

This is a guest post by David S. DuBose, Director of Supply Chain Solutions, Sedlak This three-part series explores a number of near-term and long-term moves retailers can make to eliminate or minimize holiday season fulfillment headaches and ensure their supply chain is up to the task. By most measures, the 2015 holiday season was one many retailers would like to forget. For starters, sales for the season in the United States were underwhelming, increasing by a less-than-expected 3 percent to $626.1 billion. But an even bigger problem was that operational challenges caused many retailers to have trouble satisfying customers shopping their online stores. They were frequently out of stock. One study revealed out-of-stock rates on Cyber Monday were at an all-time high, with 13 out of 100 product views showing an out-of-stock message—over twice the normal rate. Other data showed a similar problem: Thirty-five percent of online sales volume went toward retailers’ Thanksgiving Day sales, leading to “a lot more out of stocks” on Black Friday than expected. They also had difficulty delivering online orders. According to one study, it took an average of nearly seven days, or 20 percent longer than the previous year, for orders placed on Cyber Monday to arrive. The same study found unexpected delays in 9 percent of the United Parcel Service ground orders analyzed, suggesting a network under duress. And UPS’s on-time delivery rate for ground packages fell to 91 percent the week of Cyber Monday, down from 97 percent a year ago. What Was the Problem? Why the struggles? The biggest reason was retailers’ inability to accommodate the surge in online shopping, which continues to wreak havoc with retailers’ shipping. For the first time, more U.S. shoppers in 2015 bought online (103 million) than in stores...

The Ghosts of Christmas Past: How Retailers Can Avoid a Repeat of 2015’s Challenging Holiday Season Part 3: What To Do in the Next Three Years Jul13

The Ghosts of Christmas Past: How Retailers Can Avoid a Repeat of 2015’s Challenging Holiday Season Part 3: What To...

This post was written by David S. DuBose, Director of Supply Chain Solutions, Sedlak This three-part series explores a number of near-term and long-term moves retailers can make to eliminate or minimize holiday season fulfillment headaches and ensure their supply chain is up to the task. As noted in the previous posts in this series, retailers face several operative challenges during the holiday season. In Part 2, we discussed immediate actions to help retailers prepare for what’s coming later this year and next. In this final section, we detail the additional, and more substantial, steps needed to build stronger operational capabilities to improve holiday season performance in future years. Put in Place the Right Network Design The most important thing a retailer can do is ensure it has the distribution capacities and infrastructure needed over the long term to support its growth goals and accommodate shifts in consumer demand and buying behavior. This involves taking a deep look at its network design to determine what changes it must make, and when, to be successful (see figure below). Figure: High-level supply chain network design process:     The process begins with collecting the data required to forge a deep understanding of the company’s existing supply chain network along two dimensions. The first involves the markets the retailer serves, the types of customers it sells to, and sources of supply. The second is more tactical, concerned with things such as product flow and transportation costs. This data provide insights into: • The current state and capacity of the retailer’s stores, DCs and contracted facilities • The operations and process within the stores and DCs • The overall performance of the network, including costs and service levels While it’s collecting data, the retailer also should discuss exactly...

Creating Your Unique Relationship by Paula Joyce Jul13

Creating Your Unique Relationship by Paula Joyce...

“Love means never having to say you’re sorry.” At least that’s what the 1970 book and film, Love Story, would have you believe. This myth and numerous others destroy our attempts to have a successful marriage. These false beliefs get stuck in our minds and keep us from seeing the truth. We pick up these myths from society and our own experiences at home and in our friend’s homes. If we didn’t have good role models, then how could we possibly expect to develop healthy patterns when we marry? In our confusion, sometimes longevity becomes the measure of success even if you have to drug yourself to avoid divorce. Marriage counseling has a frighteningly low success rate, which makes people wonder if there is any real help out there. Maybe it takes a couple who have been successful in developing their own relationship during 44 years of marriage to offer sound advice for the rest of us. Please join us Thursday 7/14 to hear the truth about how to create the relationship of your dreams....

Can you afford to live to be 120 and Healthy? by Dr. Mary Anne Chase...

There is a lot of talk about longevity, the cost and availability of sick-care, advances in medical technology, the expense of those advances, who can get the necessary sick-care now, the freedoms and restrictions on living freely, and who is in charge of your health. Most people think of medical care after they become sick. Others of us use medical, scientific, spiritual, mental and emotional knowledge to maintain wellness There you are, standing at the crossroads in your life, wondering how to improve in all areas of your life. Do you realize that life is synonymous with growth and is something you have been doing every day since you were conceived or do you take the path that says, “There is nothing you can do about your body. Your genes dictate your future. Let’s hope the doctors and pharmaceutical companies can give you what you need to stay alive.” This talk explores these ideas and more. Guest E. Thomas Costello better known as Tom is the founder of Live To Be 120 and Healthy.com For more than a dozen years he was the head of the coaching program at The Healing Codes of Dr. Alex Loyd Services. His life-long interest in human behavior and potential has made him a devoted student and expert in the ways to develop human consciousness to higher levels. Leaders Building Self-awareness to Individual and Organizational Results Jul12

Leaders Building Self-awareness to Individual and Organizational Results...

This blog is a companion to the four-part interview series, “Leaders Building Self-awareness by Stepping Through the Worldview Membrane: Learning to Engage your Organization,” with Christopher and Sheila Cooke on the VoiceAmerica Business Leadership show “Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations,” begins July 12. The first interview is a conversation about personal freedom and flow, and how they used the online LeaderView Self-Assessment to build it. This conversation includes a discussion of how the assessment helps leaders discover their leadership strengths and biases. This blog is a companion to the interview series. This model and approach are pulled from the Innovative Leadership Workbook for Emerging Leaders. Before moving to the assessment, I wanted to provide a post on how we use assessments in the leadership development process. The process shown below suggests that the first part of the development process involves creating a compelling vision for yourself for your future. If you don’t have one, we recommend using the information in this post as the foundation for assessment and analysis. To validate your vision, we find that reading futurist publications in specific industries is helpful. The role of the futurist is to evaluate current trends and build possible scenarios for how the future might unfold. By building on your capacities for leadership, you can use these scenarios as part of your planning process to provide insight into overall societal trends, ensure that you are well prepared for the potential impact of ever-changing business conditions, and suggest imminent scenarios that help you navigate those trends effectively. There are several organizations providing very effective views into the future. One that we regularly reference is The Arlington Institute (TAI), founded in 1989 by futurist John L. Petersen. It is a nonprofit research institute that specializes in thinking about...

Forgive Yourself: It Wasn’t Your Fault by Aileen Nunez...

Forgive Yourself!!! It Wasn’t Your Fault The biggest challenge is to realize that you did worse to yourself than what your perpetrator did to you (by use the word perpetrator it is not referring to a rapist or child molester, it is to identify the person who robbed you of what was yours without your permission). You took it all in and accepted what they did unto you was going to destroy you. By not speaking up or even finding a way to defend your position, you conspired in the plan of your own destruction. How awful is that? You became your worst enemy. You gave the permission that what they did was not only going to mark you, but it was going to change the whole course of your life. It was going to change your view of life. It was going to take way your self-love. At that point, you could choose to self medicate with drugs, drink alcohol regularly or find other means of self-destruction. To forgive yourself you must first realize you were the victim. You did nothing wrong! It is about going within and establishing an inner dialogue that includes words of healing and love. You did not choose the experience of being betrayed. Love yourself enough to remind yourself that you did it perfect. You did not know any better and the time that has passed has been necessary in order for you to realize to choose a better experience in your life. You remind yourself that you are a being of light, love and peace rather than the suffering you have endured throughout your life by being a victim. Connect to the different parts of your body and forgive each area sending a lot of love and...

Over/Under: A Story of One Entrepreneur’s Journey with Two Tech Startups by Marcia Zidle Jul11

Over/Under: A Story of One Entrepreneur’s Journey with Two Tech Startups by Marcia Zidle...

What is Over / Under? It’s a metaphor for two companies, one that was over-funded and the other under-funded. The results aren’t what you would think. Why would a start-up, with a 100 page business plan and with 4.2 Million raised from top tier ventures firms, fail spectacularly, despite having a product, a top tier list of customers and a reasonable revenue base? My guest on this episode of The Business Edge is Charlie Alsmiller, CEO of Appterra, his second tech star-up. , Charlie took a different approach. He had no business plan, no customers, no products and no capital. Rather, he set out to listen to the market and the market told him how to build his business. Today, 11 years later, his company is one of the top Business-to-Business integration firms, supporting some of the largest companies in their mission critical processes. Listen to this podcast and learn:: The importance of having a plan A, B, C, D as a funding strategy; what contributes to the life or death as a start-up…and it’s not money; why the ability to say “yes” or “no” is most satisfying being an entrepreneur; how parenting is like running a business – different stages require different expectations and involvement; and the reason he says: The only thing I know about a business plan when I write it, is that it’s probably wrong.” The key takeaway: You’ll be more effective the less you do.  Build repeatable processes and train the proper people in your business. When you do that, your role changes dramatically. You become the carrier of the cultural flag….and get to push the business in new directions. Work ON your business not IN your business guides everything I do. It can be really easy to just...

The value of Visualization, meditation and breathing exercice by Marie-Helene Tourenne Jul11

The value of Visualization, meditation and breathing exercice by Marie-Helene Tourenne...

In this episode we will experience together two exercises that I have learned from my Kolaimni teacher, Mechi Garza. The first one is a visualization technique that allows us to perceive the deeper reality of an object, (an orange in this case). The value of this exercise is to broaden and develop a different kind of perception, to train our senses differently so they may grow to give us a truer “vision” of the world around us. The second one is a breathing exercise that is extremely calming and which can be of great use whenever we might be challenged and are in a situation that does not offer us the privacy we might need to practice a short meditation for example. These are simple, practical techniques that I invite you to include in your tools for a better...

Letting Go of The Past by Aileen Nunez...

Let Go of the Past Of course! Let go of the past is easier said than done. To finally achieve a place and time where we can see the horrible events in our lives that took us to a place where we actually continued to hurt ourselves, is never an easy realization. The fact that we are in the here and now ready to take the challenge of looking at the tragedy head on, is perfect. Getting to a moment where we realize that we allowed our own suffering by staying stuck in the moment.  Finding ourselves in this numb state of mind and detached from all the good we deserve, made it almost impossible to see how we promoted our own deterioration. Keeping the past in the present was a constant reminder of how we had been robbed of all the good in our life. We chose to live in the horrific tragedy day in and day out. Almost expecting more bad things showing up in our lives. How did this spiral into being our life? How could this possibly happen? There must be more to life than this. The good news is that all of it was necessary. To go through a moment where someone hurt you so deeply by the hatred they carried toward you, by the malicious intention someone had to destroy you or the actual physical violation of someone imposing force to actually take a part of you without permission. They are all tragedies that filled us with a sense of loss and inner death. How despicable for one person to think it is okay to take another’s will and violate any level of honor or respect, taking it from us. That is right! It is not your fault...

Why People with Addictions Don’t Stop by Sober Coach Dave...

The “I want to fix you because I know best” auto response to a person who is clearly heading down the wrong path in life due to their addictive behaviors doesn’t work. This method involves the belief that you must convince or persuade the person to do the right thing. In this case, stop their addictive behavior. A variety of selfless motives can draw people into “Helping”: a desire to give back, to prevent and alleviate suffering, or make a positive different in the lives of the suffering addict. Ironically, these very same motives can lead to an ineffective or even counterproductive way to help people with addictions. Helpers (spouses, friends, family, children, employers) want to help, to set things right, to get people on the road to health and wellness, free from their addictions. Seeing people head down a wrong path rouses the normal desire to get out front of them and say “Stop! Go Back! Don’t You See the Hell You Are Heading into?” There is a better way! And this is done with the best intentions, with one’s heart in the right place. We call this “I want to fix you because I know best” – the desire to fix people’s addictive behaviors and to set them prompt on a better course. What could possibly be wrong with that? The most common place to get stuck on the road to overcoming addictions is “conflicting feelings”. Most people who need to make a change, overcoming addiction or otherwise, have conflicting feelings about doing so. They see both reasons to change, getting sober and reasons not to. They want to change their addictive behaviors and they don’t want to, all at the same time. There are also some people who need to make...

It Hurts Me To Forgive by Aileen Nunez...

It Hurts Me to Forgive We all have someone in our life that has hurt us deeply and we can’t get past what they put us through. We feel that forgiving means we forget the pain they caused us. That we are accepting of the deep agony and suffering we endured. That we are allowing them to get away with what they did.  That we are dismissing that what they did to us was ok.  We fester with these thoughts for days, months and even years.  They stuck a dagger in our hearts and now we have to just pick ourselves up and move on as if nothing.  We can’t really get out of our mind how they got away with such despicable behavior. Everyone tells us to get over it and move on. What are they even saying? It was a whole lifetime of suffering and I have to pretend as if I’m ok and move past it? Of course we want to get past it or even pretend it was nothing but the truth remains that not only did they hurt us with the event, they got away with it and left us broken. The truth of the matter is that allowing ourselves to stay stuck on the deep wound, we’ve allowed the event to reoccur over and over again as if on instant replay. We allow that person to hurt us day in and day out and it doesn’t allow us to ever heal. How sad that we’ve given permission to that person to continue having the power and control to repeatedly hurt us and they stay in charge of any chance of happiness and self love we could ever enjoy. Our enemy stays so close they become part of our...

Connecting to Your Spiritual Side by Aileen Nunez...

“Connecting to Your Spiritual Side” After years in private practice as a Family Therapist, Life Coach, Entrepreneur and Mom, I decided that it was finally time to start writing my book collection of information that I have been gathering throughout the years. It was time for me to go deeper into myself to begin to connect to my spiritual side. I learned a long time ago that through love everything could be repaired. At the early age of 17, I felt it was time for me to break free from my family of origin and start a family of my own. I decided it was time for me to establish and make note of who I really am in order to help others discover who they really are…….. To launch on the journey of my life’s purpose.  There are many sides to each of us but it becomes easy to fall in the traps and become what this world wants us to be and forget our own essence. It is in my book writings that I want to encourage each reader to connect to their purpose in this life. To stop denying their greatness by losing themselves in pleasing or conforming to others. I want to continue in my path as a teacher and a coach, that what I have accomplished in over 30 years, is a Miracle and that everyone has the potential to do the same. It is with a sense of knowing that we can stand up for what we believe and feel empowered to be ourselves. If not we end up denying and negating our true essence. My life has had many ups and downs. I have had experiences of being in love and feeling loved to feeling abandoned and...

Finding Your Purpose by Aileen Nunez...

On June 23rd, the video crew hired by the Women of Distinction Magazine, was sent to my office at Famwell Healing Center, to record the video for YouTube.  Clearly, I was extremely nervous but elated with joy.  I felt so blessed that I could finally begin to get my message out to the universe on how being on purpose is so easy and rewarding as long as you stay true to yourself and your mission in life.  This was a short exerpt of how I could reach out to so many that will never make it to my office in Miami, Florida, but with YouTube, I was ready to shout out messages of hope to so many that just need a little inspiration to get on path.  Helping others to stay on the right path is part of my own mission in this lifetime.  So many ask me questions such as: What is purpose? How do I know what is my purpose? How do I connect to my purpose? These are just a few questions I frequently encounter but it is a very personal question to answer.  One thing I know for sure is that purpose is connecting to your true essence of who you really are and being in touch with your inner child.  Share what your purpose is and how you knew………. The Art of Inspiration by Cheryl Esposito Jul05

The Art of Inspiration by Cheryl Esposito...

Cheryl Esposito welcomes Shailja Patel, an award-winning Kenyan poet, artist & political activist. Friday July 08, 2016 10:00 am Pacific Time Growing up in Kenya Shailja experienced the impact of war on the lives and spirit of the people.  Her path took her on a journey from working on Wall Street to living a monastic life, running non-profits, eventually finding her voice in poetry. She uses text, voice, body and critical thinking to delve for truth and dissect power. Today she is a performance artist bringing her work to people around the world. Her one-woman show, Migritude, unfolds hidden histories of women’s lives in the bootprint of Empire, from India to East Africa. Shailja’s powerful performances bring her audiences to an introspective space, connecting with the raw emotion and impact of war and oppression, daring us to imagine a different reality. The irresistible passion and eloquence of her words touches people at their core and inspires action. I experienced Shailja on the main stage at a Bioneers Conference with a standing room only crowd of hundreds of people. Her performance was breathtaking. We were all moved so deeply – it was as if we were in a trance. The end of her performance was met with profound silence…we were unable to breathe, to move from the moment. Then at once, the entire audience leapt to its feet with applause and cheers and tears that went on and on. Shailja said, “The fifteen-second pin drop silence after I finished my performance was worth three standing ovations.” Indeed.   Words shape us. They inspire. Join the conversation with Cheryl Esposito and Shailja Patel for a conversation…inspired. Missed the Show at 10am? Creating Vibrant Departments in Large Complex Organizations by Maureen Metcalf Jul05

Creating Vibrant Departments in Large Complex Organizations by Maureen Metcalf...

I am writing this post in conjunction with the Voice America interview to be aired on June 28 because I have worked with many leaders who are discouraged because they see their organizations as challenging and believe as leaders that they as leaders are stuck. This piece is intended to demonstrate that in some cases, departments within large organizations can be much more vibrant than the overall organization. I have been working as a consultant with WCBE, a unit of Columbus City Schools, since 2012. I am now the board president of the “Our WCBE” a nonprofit organization that supports the station financially. This small department (WCBE) within a large government organization strikes me as highly vibrant and nimble even though the school district is not. I make this observation not as a criticism of the schools—obviously a radio station runs differently than a school district and has far fewer concerns for safety and other factors that require the district to be much more cautious in fulfilling their obligations than does a radio station. I wanted to understand if departments could be vibrant (a positive deviant) when the parent organization is more “statistically normal.” To prove our hypothesis that this is possible, WCBE employees took the Harmonic Vibrancy assessment twice. First as employees of the radio station, and again as employees of the school district. The scores varied significantly. The next question I sought an answer for was: What is happening at the station that is different from what is happening with the district? The following points explain part of the difference between the organizations: 1. Vibrancy starts with the leader, Dan Mushalko, who sees everyone on his team as competent people who fill important roles. This seems like a no-brainer and something that...

What’s The Best That Could Happen? by Aileen Nunez...

What’s the Best that Could Happen? We are usually very keen when we realize the bad things happening in our life and the things in our past that we want to forget. We live in a society that reminds us that it is our duty to remember the bad moments in our life, the sad things that have happened, the areas in our life where we have failed, or our shortcomings. So when we hear phrases like What’s the best thing that could happen, we look around with a blank stare and feel lost. When we are asked to remember all the great things that have happened throughout our lifetime that have been life changing, we enter a moment of silence. As a society, we have been conditioned that even as a small child, our grades in school defined who we were as a person. If we were lucky to get A’s in our academics, we were clearly accomplished individuals. If by chance we were that student that received D’s or F’s we were looked down upon as failures and the likelihood of success was very dim. No one would ever ask what could possibly get a child that had the potential of being outstanding to nearly making through their academic journey. In these writings it is important to point out that we as individuals are looked upon for all that we are good, bad, and indifferent. One of the biggest paralyzers of all that we can say stops us is the emotion of fear. Fear is something that is instilled through our society on all of us as a method of controlling us to do what is expected of us by others or by society. The problem that fear creates within us is...

Our Children Are Cutting by Aileen Nunez...

Our Children are Cutting!!!!!! The subject of cutting has been continuously brought up with adolescents coming in for therapy. It is with a very heavy heart that I can express the difficulty when hearing that a young child of only 12 or 13 is so sad with their life, feeling so broken, that they intentionally and deliberately take a sharp object into their skin to help relieve the pain they feel within their heart and soul. I ask myself, “where have we gone wrong as a society and as a human race?” We have failed our children. The very same beings we brought into this world to help them be the best they can be…… Instead we have failed them and filled them with sadness and anxiety.  We have paralyzed them. This is NOT OK!!!!! We must find a way to touch the heart and mind of these kids that only a few years ago were being carried in our arms, rocking in a cradle, crawling, learning how to walk and connecting to this world that was supposed to surround them with love and light. Instead, we allowed the darkness to fill their life. We filled them with our voids, our feelings of loss, and the thorns of each rose that could have helped soothe them with beauty and love. As a therapist, I say ENOUGH!!!!! I can not stand back and watch our children dwindle away with hopelessness!!!! We have failed our little angels. We stepped back and gave them the freedom to fend for themselves and stood still only to witness as they drown in the tsunami of sadness and desperation. They don’t know who they are or what is expected of them. Who cares what schools are teaching when over 70...

To Create the Future, Change the Conversation by Cheryl Esposito...

Peter Block Cheryl welcomes Peter Block award winning author, thought leader, and consultant to corporate, government, and community organizations in the realm of empowerment, stewardship, chosen accountability, & the reconciliation of community. Friday January 18, 2013 10:00 am Pacific Time Peter’s many books include The Answer to How Is Yes: Acting on What Matters, which won the Independent Book Publisher Book Award for Business Breakthrough Book of the Year; and Community: The Structure of Belonging. Peter suggests that our major challenge in moving toward a relevant future is to focus on what we can create, rather than what problems we can solve. He has stopped talking about what’s wrong and how to fix it. Instead, he observes, “Nothing new gets created by better problem solving or by focusing on low-hanging fruit,” he says. “No matter how sophisticated we are as a learning organization, if our conversations are limited to measurable outcomes, we are simply getting better at a system, not creating a new future.“ Want to know how to do this? Victims of the Big People by Aileen Nunez...

Victims of the Big People Throughout my many years of practice it has been a gift to work with so many families. The most challenging is when working with children who come with issues of being victimized by the situations placed in their lives, where their parents have been involved in the legal system for custody battles. As much as the court system, the parents of these children, and therapists claim that it is always in the best interest of the children, they forget the impact and the emotional pain and suffering they place on these kids. It used to always be that the closest thing to a God like figure in children’s lives was their mother/father or both. Many children have been robbed of that experience and have been forced to choose one parent over another. Many times it is forgotten that the child is the innocent bystander looking for direction and guidance from these two people they call parents, who are supposed to have it all together to make the child’s life easy. The children are made to look at the evil or dark side of the parent when all along they have been taught that it’s important to love mom and dad equally. The parents forget that the children are supposed to stay focused to do well in school, to achieve academic excellence to one day be the professional that could attain their dream in life. Instead, because parents choose they cannot stay friends with someone who at some point in their life was the person they loved, had children with, and the person they made their life partner, has now turned out to be the enemy. The child in these cases can not fathom how the same family that would...

Children Lost in the Chaos by It’s Absolutely All About You...

Children Lost in the Chaos ITS NOT OKAY!!!!! Dismissing the suffering of a child that doesn’t have access to their mom or dad is despicable. In leaving my daughter at Columbia University to do her graduate program, I was faced with feelings of deep suffering and agony. When leaving her, I wanted to go back to either take her back home with me or to stay at the University with her. I don’t believe that came with being enmeshed or obsessed but with the true feeling of loss and separation anxiety.  Almost feeling that I was never going to see her again. I knew in my heart and in my thoughts that I would obviously see her in a few weeks or months, but the pain was so deep that it was hard to breathe. It suddenly came over me to think what a small child could possibly imagine and experience when they get shuffled around between parents and caretakers. Going into new homes and having new partners replacing their mommy or daddy. How awful an experience of loss and suffering. Not even knowing what questions to ask or who to ask them to. Wanting to understand what is happening to what they thought was a happy family. They feel dismissed and unnoticed. So many losses all at once!!!!! Of course they have trouble concentrating in school when they can’t get passed the emotional burden that they are facing. They can’t help but to feel ashamed and confused. They don’t feel worthy of asking for more information when clearly what has happened to their family was done without their permission. Their family torn into pieces and they figure it out when they realize that one of their parents has left the house and left...

How Do We Value Wildlife with Calvin Cottar Jun30

How Do We Value Wildlife with Calvin Cottar...

Join Eli Weiss and Calvin Cottar in discussing new conservation models and strategies that are ripe for out of the box thinking to be responsive to the needs and shifts in both multi-use landscapes and various value systems. If wildlife has no value to the local private landowners that depend 100% on living off their land, then wildlife will not be considered as part of the economic equation of payment or solutions. Whether we like it or not, coexistence comes at a price– how we define ‘price’, how it’s paid for and by whom, that is the topic Calvin and I discuss. Tune in on Monday, June 27th 8 a.m. PT! ‪#‎Conservation‬ ‪#‎Wildlife‬...

Hang Time! by Cynthia Brian...

“Flowers and fruit are only the beginning. In the seed lies the life and the future.”
  — Marion Zimmer Bradley, Fruit, luscious, juicy, tantalizing ripe fruit! There is no better nor satisfying delicacy than the fruit you grow in your own backyard. Whether it’s a pot or a plot, growing your own is the way the rock it! With our long warm summer days at their height, fruit and vegetables are ripening quickly awaiting plucking for our feasts. Apricots, plums, prunes, mulberries, loquats, tangelos, and tangerines are just a few of the gems hanging from my trees right now. Soon there will be mouth-watering peaches, pears, apples, guavas, nectarines, and figs. Tomatoes have taken up the space left by harvested greens, while beans, eggplant, peppers, zucchini, cucumbers, and tomatillos are racing to the finish line. It’s a virtual Farmer’s Market in my garden and this is exactly the way I like to eat. Every day I walk into my potager to fill baskets with crunchy deliciousness for our supper. I never know what I’ll be creating in the kitchen until I see what’s ready to harvest. I continue to sprinkle lettuce and arugula seeds in the empty spaces to extend my summer, fall and winter crops. My recommendation is to sow rows of bush beans, carrots, and radishes or any other vegetable every three weeks to satisfy your cravings for freshness. Remember to continue to replenish the soil with nutrient rich compost to keep productivity high. Did you know that that average home gardener only spends $359 per year on gardening supplies and plants as reported in a study conducted by Money.com? That seems ridiculously low when you consider that growing your own tomatoes will save you an average $9.50, cucumbers $8.00, peppers $3.60,...

Reconnect To Your Inner Child by Aileen Nunez...

Reconnect To Your Inner Child We are all a victim of something in our lives that made such an enormous impact that the event made it life changing for us. When we realize how much that day, that specific moment, that minute, the second the intention was put out to create the tragedy that marked us, we were left with just that, a mark. The mark could be called many things such as trauma, an episode or even a nightmare. The feelings of being robbed of our own essence. The unspoken permission we gave that someone who took our power away. The exasperating feeling of being left stuck in a void that is cold, dreary, emotionless which ultimately paralyzes us. The not knowing what to do next. Who did this awful gesture? Why would they harm us that way? They said they were our friend or even more impactful when they said they loved us. The enveloped feeling of despair and abandonment clearly changes all that we use to be. The urge to move on quickly and not disclose the horrific experience we just lived, leaves us feeling ashamed and the embarrassment too much to handle. Feeling we did something to deserve what just happened, not knowing what to do next or who to turn to that will not think we have lost our mind, is too much to process. The next best thing is to make a valid choice to forget the incident even happened. So we decide to block it from our memory. Store it away where it will never be recalled as a part of our life. Pretending we are alright and that the victimization never occurred. We choose to minimize and by doing that, we accepted that what was done...

It’s Absolutely All About You by Aileen Nunez...

It’s Absolutely All About You I recall a few years back being at a park where one of my children was playing baseball. I remember vividly a mother screaming to her son, that was seven years old at the time, when she stared him in the eyes as she shouted you must stop acting that way and stop thinking its all about you. The child with a blank stare in his eyes appeared lost and didn’t understand what the mother meant at that particular moment when he was made that statement. It was evident that the child felt his life and his world was tumbling over him. The feeling of despair and loss while that child was going up to bat during his little league baseball game, surrounded by peers, who wanted nothing more but for him to be at his best, left him deflated and emotionally drained. As he picked up his bat to go hit the ball, as everyone was staring in silence, waiting for him to hit another home run, his loss of direction took over and he struck out. It was evident at that moment, as he needed words of encouragement from his mom or his dad which was one of the coaches, he felt that no matter what he would do, it was never going to be good enough. He pretty much gave in and gave up to his mothers words that it wasn’t about him and he set himself up to fail not only during the game, but he gave up on his team mates and ultimately gave up on his ability to be the best he could be. Today that child is now a young adult, as I have spent years observing the outcome of those very...

Creating Vibrant Departments in Large Complex Organizations Jun29

Creating Vibrant Departments in Large Complex Organizations...

Empowering Women of Power by Aileen Nunez...

Empowering Women of Power So often we find ourselves feeling we have to be super women that can handle it all.  Trying to be the best at everything comes with a price.  My book is about teaching women that being empowered is knowing how to balance all the different hats we wear without losing the most important thing of all, OURSELVES!!!!!! Forgetting ourselves in the midst of the chaos will never help us feel successful.  Giving up our dreams will make us bitter and sad.  Losing site of our purpose will create resentment and hatred.  Choosing to make it about everyone without any left over for us will fill us with low self esteem and low self love.  So being a Woman of Power means we remember that being the best that we can be fills us with a level of empowerment that is what a true leader is all about.  Finding true success as a Woman of Power is filling ourselves with self love, self honor, self respect, self confidence, self esteem, self appreciation and self admiration.  Many calculate this as being conceited or self centered but the truth of the matter is being at your best you can share your best from a place of love.  Treat yourselves and pamper you!!!! Feeling great is exactly what it feels like to be a Woman of Power.   Share your experiences and help others find that inner empowerment….. Tune in live to “It’s Absolutely All About You” every Friday at 2pm...

You Can Have It All! Just Believe by Aileen Nunez...

You Can Have It ALL!!! Just Believe!! On April 21, 2015, I received a random phone call from Women of Distinction Magazine.  It was such a random call that I wanted to say they had the wrong number.  As I continued on with the conversation, I realized they were really interested in me and what I could offer to others.  As I began to digest the possibilites, I accepted the offer immediately.  I began to realize that this was an amazing example of the Law Of Attraction.  I have been putting together a book that I am writing and after attending a Hay House, Writing from the Soul Workshop with Wayne Dyer, this was exactly what I was told I needed in order to get my books published.  A “Platform”!!!!! The universe alligned me with the platform I need in order to establish an audience. Then a few days later, I received another call that they not only wanted to write about my story but they wanted to have me on the front cover of the August edition.  By now, I was really feeling the giddy nervousness of “this is really happening to me”!!!!!!!  After a few days, they also included asking me to have a short interview that would be published on YouTube.  By this point, I was jumping, laughing, crying and thanking God and the universe because exactly how I had asked was exactly how it was showing up.  The power of my words were synchronized and alligned with the Powerful Mind of the Universe.  This was finally my turn to get it all as I have longed it for many years.  My biggest gift to clients, friends, and family is that when we believe and put out our intentions to service...

What is the Most Difficult Biblical Commandment? by Rabbi Mel Glazer...

WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT BIBLICAL COMMANDMENT TO OBSERVE? Rabbi Mel Glazer, D. Min., D.D. Rabbi, Temple Shalom Host, “From Mourning to Morning” VoiceAmerica Radio Network Thursday nights 5PM PST In what most people call The Old Testament (we Jews call it the Hebrew Bible), there are 613 commandments that God gave us to observe. God says: if you will observe My commandments, I will protect you, and I will be your God. 613? That sounds like a lot, doesn’t it? Actually, there are less. We don’t have slavery like Biblical slavery, we don’t offer up animal sacrifices, there is no portable Tabernacle, and today we have a different agricultural economy than that in the Bible. Still, let’s say there are approximately 300 commandments that we could observe, which commandment do you think is the most difficult? And why? I have asked many people this question in the past week, and most of them suggest that the most difficult is  “Honor your Father and Mother.” And I will admit, observing that commandment can be extremely difficult at times. Parents, if you don’t believe me, ask your own kids about how difficult this commandment is for them… But I have another suggestion. My choice for the most difficult commandment is found in Lev. 19:18. We all know it from Sunday School. Ready? Here’s my personal choice: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Why is this my “most difficult” commandment to observe? Because in reality, there are two parts to the commandment. First, you need to love yourself. And then, you need to love your neighbor. And for lots of people you and I know, the first part is harder than the second part. And, I would add, unless you truly love yourself, there is no possibility...

EXPERT LEGAL ADVICE ON SURROGACY, COMMON CONCERNS ABOUT SURROGATES, AND A MOVING LETTER FROM AN INTENDED PARENT TO HER GESTATIONAL CARRIER Jun27

EXPERT LEGAL ADVICE ON SURROGACY, COMMON CONCERNS ABOUT SURROGATES, AND A MOVING LETTER FROM AN INTENDED PARENT TO HER GESTATIONAL...

After joining me on “Turn the Page” for a compelling three-episode series on surrogacy, my guests offered additional information to support you in navigating your exploration of, and foray into this family building option. Jeni Denhof, a former carrier and Program Manager with the surrogate parenting agency Circle, thoughtfully and sensitively responds to frequently asked questions and common concerns about surrogates in her blog post, “A Surrogate’s Point of View:” What if my surrogate wants to keep my baby? What if she becomes attached to my baby? Will my surrogate take care of herself while she is pregnant? What does my surrogate want from me throughout our journey? Will my surrogate be sad after the baby is born? What does my surrogate want from me after our journey? Circle’s Director of Legal Services, Dean Hutchison, Esq., suggests that comprehensive screening of both carriers and intended parents, with a similar due diligence applied during the matching process, and support for all parties throughout the journey, can prevent the types of horror stories that may dissuade some from considering surrogacy. His frame of reference includes 12 years with Circle, through which over 1,100 babies have been born to both international and domestic parents (43% same sex couples, 44% heterosexual couples, 7% gay individuals, 6% heterosexual individuals) from over 70 countries since 1995. Circle’s stats seem to align with Dean’s guidance that a successful process is very much tied into appropriate screening at the onset. The Agency’s April 2016 published fact sheet states, “Over 1,250 women, on average, start the process of becoming a Circle surrogate each month. Of those, about 1.7% ultimately match with intended parents.” Intended parents who apply to partner with a surrogacy agency write an introductory letter that describes markers of their journey....

The Dik Dik also brings psychic awareness, as we embrace the gentle energy of this graceful animal, we become fully aware of our surroundings and our higher self. Using Brain Science to Enhance Leadership Ability by Gary Weber Jun24

Using Brain Science to Enhance Leadership Ability by Gary Weber...

This post, written by Gary Weber, is a companion to the July 5 VoiceAmerica interview with Gary Weber, Using Brain Science to Enhance Leadership. Gary talks about our personal mental operating systems and how to replace them with an updated one. Replacing our current “I”-based, mental operating system (OS I) with an upgrade, largely by reducing the self-referential internal narrative (SRIN), is something I have been exploring for a while. The belief that our current OS has become “maladaptive,” was discussed in the blogpost “Does your nondual awakening benefit ‘everyone’? the world?” and in the video “dysfunctional evolution of the mind.” OS I developed about 75,000 years ago. (see blogpost “How old is the “I”?  How/why did it come into existence?…new science”) Our predecessors split off from our nearest relatives, the chimpanzees, about 6,000,000 years ago; the “I”-based OS 1 has been in operation for about one percent of the time we have been distinct from other primates. Our brain size increased three times after that split from the chimpanzees until when we developed OS 1. Many structural, organization, and neural modifications evolved before OS 1 could emerge. As we know, our current OS has many limitations. It is difficult to focus on important “stuff” with the continual interference from our SRIN. “Does insufficient apoptosis cause cancer?” competes with “Why did Jane treat me the way she did?” “I’ll tell her next week what I think of her,” “I should stop eating ice cream—Greek yogurt would be better”; “What should I wear tonight?”, etc. The persistent SRIN also consumes huge amounts of energy, wastes much bandwidth, and increases negative energy. It also results in emotionally-charged memories that lead to depression, anxiety, dis-ease, worries, craving, attachment, suffering, etc. The recognition that SRIN was THE problem...

Health Care Changes In Primary Care: A CEO’s View by Maureen Metcalf and Jim Svagerko Jun21

Health Care Changes In Primary Care: A CEO’s View by Maureen Metcalf and Jim Svagerko...

This blog was written as a collaboration between Maureen Metcalf and Jim Svagerko. It is a companion to the VoiceAmerica interview featuring Bill Wulf, MD and Jim Svagerko MA, PCC, talking about the leading work Central Ohio Primary Care with 300 physicians is doing and preparing for health care reform and new innovations in medical care over the next five years, and how it became a leader in their field and what they are doing to shape how the field of medicine and how it is practiced. According to the Community Action Network, “A healthy community reflects a sense of mental and physical wellbeing and is the foundation for achieving all other goals. Good health is often taken for granted but is essential for a productive society. For example, every community needs a healthy workforce upon which to build its economy and healthier students are more equipped to learn and be successful academically.” While the business of healthcare is run by physicians and administrators, health impacts every one of us. It is our responsibility to own our individual health because it effects our ability to enjoy life. Many of the challenges we face are a direct result multiple factors within the economy, and some health issues are a consequence of socio-economic disparity. Insurance plays a role when sometimes it is difficult to get access to the highest quality healthcare with the limitations on coverage. Additionally, factors in families and schools can play a role when adverse childhood events leave a lifelong impact on overall health. Injurious childhood events often contribute to mental health and drug and alcohol issues later in life. Often, the cycle continues. Many of these factors are interrelated and solving them requires cross-sector focus on community health. Communities like Franklin County...
