Health Care Changes In Primary Care: A CEO’s View by Maureen Metcalf and Jim Svagerko Jun21

Health Care Changes In Primary Care: A CEO’s View by Maureen Metcalf and Jim Svagerko...

This blog was written as a collaboration between Maureen Metcalf and Jim Svagerko. It is a companion to the VoiceAmerica interview featuring Bill Wulf, MD and Jim Svagerko MA, PCC, talking about the leading work Central Ohio Primary Care with 300 physicians is doing and preparing for health care reform and new innovations in medical care over the next five years, and how it became a leader in their field and what they are doing to shape how the field of medicine and how it is practiced. According to the Community Action Network, “A healthy community reflects a sense of mental and physical wellbeing and is the foundation for achieving all other goals. Good health is often taken for granted but is essential for a productive society. For example, every community needs a healthy workforce upon which to build its economy and healthier students are more equipped to learn and be successful academically.” While the business of healthcare is run by physicians and administrators, health impacts every one of us. It is our responsibility to own our individual health because it effects our ability to enjoy life. Many of the challenges we face are a direct result multiple factors within the economy, and some health issues are a consequence of socio-economic disparity. Insurance plays a role when sometimes it is difficult to get access to the highest quality healthcare with the limitations on coverage. Additionally, factors in families and schools can play a role when adverse childhood events leave a lifelong impact on overall health. Injurious childhood events often contribute to mental health and drug and alcohol issues later in life. Often, the cycle continues. Many of these factors are interrelated and solving them requires cross-sector focus on community health. Communities like Franklin County...

What Are The Three Top Relationship Killers? Expert Opinions Jun17

What Are The Three Top Relationship Killers? Expert Opinions...

What do you think are the three top relationship killers? About a month ago a relationship site contacted me and asked me that question. The Coordinator of the site said that they were gathering the opinions of people, like myself, who worked with and wrote about couples. In the end they gathered some fascinating and important comments from 62 experts. I would invite you to consider that when your relationship is working there is no one more expert about why it feels good, thrives and keeps you both happy and healthy than both of you. When it is not working so well, reading the opinions and advice from those who have worked with couples may provide motivation to improve your relationship. It may shine a light on what is keeping you from being happy together. Given everyone’s interest in “ online” answers, try using these opinions as interesting information that you can read together or read separately in a way that invites self-reflection, mutual consideration or even just something different to consider together. We never know where a first step might begin. I have listed the three top relationship killers that I identified. I have also listed comments I have heard over the years. Below them you will find the link to 62 contributions by men and women, from matchmakers to mental health professionals who work with couples…. Three Top Relationship Killers Distrust Distrust in a relationship disqualifies the safety needed for connection, intimacy and growth. Distrust may stem from a known or feared betrayal, which left unresolved and unaddressed, slowly eats away at all that is good. Distrust, which persists regardless of apology and change, may imply that mistakes and imperfections are not allowed. Sure I made mistakes, but no matter what I...

Summer Loving in the Garden by Cynthia Brian...

“It’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.” Marilyn Monroe. What a difference a week makes! Our weather went from cool, drizzly, and overcast to three digit temperatures in less than seven days.  Our emerald green hills metamorphosed into golden grasslands seemingly overnight. Mother Nature is preparing us for the forthcoming summer solstice. Pool parties, barbecues, and kids playing outside portend a pleasant June. How wonderful it is to sit in a comfortable chaise on the patio on a warm evening admiring the landscape and the stars. Welcome to blooms in June! I was delighted to have my daughter, Heather (yes, named after the flower), spend a couple of weeks with me recently.  The first words out of her mouth as she walked into the garden were “Mom, your landscape looks like a scene from Alice in Wonderland. It’s so colorful, bold, beautiful.” Indeed, my garden is a riot of hues with roses, gladiolas, lilies, love in the mist, calendulas, clematis, petunias, dahlias, hibiscus, geraniums, pelargoniums, calla lilies, nasturtiums, butterfly bush, guavas, daisies,  poppies, osteospermum, chamomile, salvias, lavender, numerous herbs, and flowering succulents.  Many of the blooms are edible, gracing my salads, sauces, and stir-fry. There is no mystery to incorporating some summer loving into your garden. My secret sauce is to plant a plethora of perennials and bulbs enhanced by color spots of annuals augmented by shrubs that bloom, trees that bear fruit, with edibles everywhere. Add your unique creative artistry to create your personalized haven and voila! Instant success, year after year. The elements you must consider whenever you are planting perennials or any plant are soil, light, moisture needs, climate, colors, and plant qualities. Once you know what you like, you can layer your landscape to attract the pollinators, birds,...

A Year on Performance and Mindset! by Luis Vicente Garcia Jun16

A Year on Performance and Mindset! by Luis Vicente Garcia...

What do you think if you hear about a year on Performance and Mindset? For me it has been a celebration of both Entrepreneurial Magic and Personal Success! Join me as we celebrate a full year with or radio show ‘Performing at Your Best: Mindset Evolution with Luis Vicente Garcia’. We had an incredible year filled with amazing concepts, new themes, inspiring notes and fabulous interviews: Joan Detz, Margaret Maclay, Steve Olds, Marc Koehler, Bob Burg, Hans Trupp, Michelle Poler, you name it. We talked about business ideas and fear; emotional intelligence and franchises; business expertise alongside purpose and vision; and we talked about the Sustainable Development Goals issued by the United Nations. We focused on improving and changing your mindset in order to increase your performance. Join me in this one hour show as we review our first year on Performance and Mindset. When we talk about Business or entrepreneurial success, we might not be really sure what it is or how to define it; and this will prove to be critical. You need to know where you are today and where you are going; then, figure out your plan to get there. Whether you have been in business for years or you are a start-up, things look harder and more difficult than what you originally thought, take more time and might have a bigger cost than planned. Your three main resources: time, team and money will be tested over and over again. What you need to do here is to understand what makes you apart, what is important for you and your company and how can you start redirecting some of the approaches and ideas you have been using in the past. This actually is the number one critical issue for all...

HOW MINDFULNESS CAN STRENGTHEN YOUR EFFECTIVENESS AS A LEADER by Hemda Mizrahi & Josh Ehrlich Jun15

HOW MINDFULNESS CAN STRENGTHEN YOUR EFFECTIVENESS AS A LEADER by Hemda Mizrahi & Josh Ehrlich...

Mindful Leadership expert Josh Ehrlich, Ph.D., author of MindShifting: Focus for Performance, joined me on “Turn the Page” to discuss how you can practice mindfulness, and integrate it as a team sport in your organization. Dr. Ehrlich highlights that “mindfulness does not just mean meditation.” It is reflected in the way we breathe, walk, eat, smile, and work. Examples include managing our access to electronic devices and communications such that we can be focused and present while on conference calls, during learning and development activities, etc. Dr. Ehrlich provides additional guidance to support you and your organization in your practice of mindfulness, and in reaping it’s many research-based benefits: MINDFULNESS AND PRODUCTIVITY “Fortune 500 organizations are teaching mindfulness to employees not because it makes them feel better (which it does), but because it makes them more productive. We get more productive when we focus on our process (how we get results), not just on outcomes (the scorecard of results themselves). Mindfulness helps us focus on our own process and thus to learn and perform more effectively.” MINDFULNESS AND NATURE “It’s as if many of us have ADD—Attention Deficit Disorder. Our environment and constant stimulation from technology creates it. So we feel restless, and this impulse correctly asks us to move. But instead of racing around we can practice moving mindfully while walking from one meeting to the next, or while stretching (which is the essence of yoga). Moving mindfully outdoors is especially beneficial. We evolved outdoors, so it makes sense that nature would bring us back to our senses (Kabat-Zinn, 2006). Spending time in natural settings seems to reduce symptoms of attention deficit, as well as make us more creative problem-solvers (Park, Tsunetsugu, Kasetani, Morikawa, Kagawa, & Miyazaki, 2009). Thus, we can speculate whether...

Minding Your Business: The Value of Mindfulness by Maureen Metcalf Jun14

Minding Your Business: The Value of Mindfulness by Maureen Metcalf...

Stress, regardless of how we try to avoid it, is a given. It is part of everyday living, but how we choose to acknowledge and approach it makes all the difference. Stress can be either productive or destructive depending on how much of it you have and how you process it. Think of a time when you performed better, prepared more, and worked harder because you were able to harness it and use it to your advantage. Now think of a time when you performed worse because of stress, perhaps spiraling out of control? What made these situations different for you? This post is based on the work of Maryanna Klatt, PhD, professor of Clinical Family Medicine at The Ohio State University. An expert in integrative medicine, she has spent more than a decade studying perceived stress, sleep, cortisol, and salivary alpha amylase levels in saliva—an indicator of the fight-or-flight response we experience in stressful situations. Her research is helping people of all ages and professions reduce their stress and improve their overall wellness. “We all have the same stresses—lack of control is a big one people struggle with, lack of time, continuous partial attention is a huge problem,” says Klatt. This post is a companion to the Voice America radio interview focusing on mindfulness and leadership. Klatt uses mindfulness as the foundation for her research. “Mindfulness is characterized by nonjudgmental, sustained moment-to-moment awareness of physical sensations, perceptions, affective states, thoughts and imagery.” Using the analogy of a hurricane, Klatt explains that mindfulness training can help you navigate to the eye of the storm—the calmest part—and figure out a way to deal with the chaotic circumstances swirling around you in a positive manner. To do this, she developed Mindfulness in Motion, an eight-week program...

Innovative Leadership: Staying Current as a Leader by Maureen Metcalf Jun13

Innovative Leadership: Staying Current as a Leader by Maureen Metcalf...

This post is written as a companion to the Voice America Interview featuring Carla Morelli and Maureen Metcalf talking about staying current as a leader. In this interview, the participants discuss the Innovative Leadership framework and how leaders innovate or update their leadership mindset and abilities. This post was written by Maureen Metcalf talking about her practice of refreshing her leadership vision – a process she has written about in her award winning book series focusing on Innovative Leadership. My vision and values serve as an important foundation for who I am and how I live my life. As the CEO of my company and also as a leadership faculty member, it is important for me to live what I teach. This is one of the core practices. I also revisit it regularly to ensure I am living what I say. For those of you who resist this process, it is true that you will not spend an hour over the weekend and suddenly determine your life purpose, however, capturing your general direction is a great start and you can refine it over time. A colleague and friend, Mike Sayre, CEO of NexDefense, talks about how he used his personal vision to select his current role. He has been a strong proponent of the importance of knowing and living your personal vision and sharing it with others so they know what to expect of you. You can listen to Mike talk about his vision as well as his company in a Voice America Interview.  He is a great example of a leader who follows his vision as the foundation for his choices. The following exercise is drawn from the Innovative Leadership Workbook for Global Leaders. Define Personal Vision Follow the steps defined below: •Step...

The Business Interpretation of Performance: Training Intent – “The MAGIC of the Martial Arts of Business” by Luis Vicente Garcia Jun09

The Business Interpretation of Performance: Training Intent – “The MAGIC of the Martial Arts of Business” by Luis Vicente Garcia...

When we go out to work or live our own lives, we must decide how we are going to do it. When we continue to learn and then implement the knowledge we have accumulated and the abilities we have developed, we need to understand that how we do one thing is how we will do everything we do. At the end, it is all about performance. Over the years we acquire new knowledge that we must apply; have experiences that we learn from; meet people and start developing a network whom we influence and who we learn from. These factors all combine into allowing us to be who we are today, at a personal and professional level. It is here where Training, Performance and Focus intersect and define how we do all that we do, simple or complex. It determines our ability to perform in an excellent manner, consistently. Now we must apply the learning and experiences we get from life, and the keys we obtain from sports and martial arts. Join me as we take the Training Intent of Martial Arts and give it an entrepreneurial meaning, so we can all benefit in our businesses. Follow Up Strategies That Will Get More Clients and Close More Sales by Marcia Zidle Jun08

Follow Up Strategies That Will Get More Clients and Close More Sales by Marcia Zidle...

Follow up is a fundamental in the sales process, but so often, the neglected fundamental that is a vital part of success. We know that the more you follow up, the more likely you are to get more business. However, many of us struggle with our follow up – we have good intentions but do it sporadically, half-hardheartedly and most likely without an effective methodology. Here’s how to change that and get the business we desire and need! On this episode of The Business Edge Wanda Allen with Follow Up Sales Strategies shared the fundamentals of the follow up process which included: why using a system is critical for success; how the right mindset makes the follow up process easier; and the surprising sales statistics that we should pay attention to. Listen to this podcast and learn: The three different ways to follow up beside just calling prospects back; why systems are important and which ones work and which don’t work; how our emotions and thinking sabotage us and what we can do about it; the reasons follow-up is focused first on building relationships; then getting the sale; how to get out of the “I don’t have time” syndrome and make follow-up a priority that you will be committed to. The key takeaway: Don’t just stand there; take this action now! Identify three people you know and need to follow-up with; figure out why you haven’t; then do it today – not tomorrow. Or identify your top three clients; ask self when you last talked with them – not email, text – but picked up the phone. Make the commitment and make the investment of your time; it will pay you...

A Way To God: Creation Spirituality by Paula Joyce Jun08

A Way To God: Creation Spirituality by Paula Joyce...

Do you remember the excitement of opening a Cracker Jack Box and finding your special gift hidden inside? That was the same feeling I had when I opened the email asking me if I wanted to have Matthew Fox on my radio show. I’m very grateful to have so many of the people on my show who helped formulate who I am, what I believe and how I live my life. I still remember the feeling of holding Matthew Fox’s books in my hands with my yellow highlighter at the ready to ensure that I absorbed everything I needed. He was my mentor, my teacher, my guide even though we had not met. Now, as I read again about Creation Spirituality, I understand what an amazing teacher he truly is. You can see the ideas I learned from him reflected in every show through my writings, silver lining stories, upcoming seminars, my guests, their ideas and our conversations. What a blessing to welcome Matthew Fox to my show. Please join us Thursday 6/16 for a rare treat as he discusses A Way To God....

Your Garden is Your Canvas by Cynthia Brian...

By Cynthia Brian “The world is but a canvas to the imagination.” Henry David Thoreau With summer approaching quickly, June is possibly one of the busiest months. Graduations, Father’s Day, weddings, birthdays, vacations, swim meets, pool parties…it seems that these thirty days offer the most opportunities for celebrations. It is time to fire up the barbeque, sweep the patio, freshen the flowerbeds, and get ready for some serious fun.  By growing your own food, you and your family will be healthier, happier, and enjoy more exercise. Get your children involved in the seed sowing, planting, and caring process to help them understand how food travels from the ground to the table.  Allow your garden to become your artistic canvas to showcase your imagination and creativity throughout the summer. SEED SOWING This is a fun project to do with children providing pride in growing. Start with radishes, lettuces, kale, zinnias, marigolds, or beans as they germinate quickly.  An edible garden is especially popular with young kids. ⎫ RECYCLE plastic six-packs, flats, and pots to use to grow your own seedlings. Wash well before beginning the process and make sure the drainage holes are not plugged. ⎫ HANG a shoe organizer on a sunny wall with the pockets filled to ¾ full with soil for a fun vertical garden that is especially excellent for herbs, lettuces, and other compact plants. ⎫ BUY sterile seed-starting mix, which doesn’t have any soil in it when you want to plant seeds in a container. ⎫ READ seed packets carefully. It’s critical to know how to plant each variety of seed, what amount of water, sunshine, and care it will need. You also want to know how big the plant will become. ⎫ PLANT extra seeds as many will not germinate....

WANT TO MOVE LIKE A DANCER OR MARTIAL ARTIST? TRAIN IN THREE PLANES OF MOTION by Hemda Mizrahi & Ari Weller Jun07

WANT TO MOVE LIKE A DANCER OR MARTIAL ARTIST? TRAIN IN THREE PLANES OF MOTION by Hemda Mizrahi & Ari...

According to fitness expert Ari Weller, Founder of PhilosoFit, a leading edge movement training studio in East Hampton, NY, “Life in the body expresses itself in three dimensions. Movement specialists label these the Sagital Plane, the Frontal Plane and the Transverse Plane.” Ari describes the three planes as follows: SAGITAL: front to back movement. Think bending to pick something up off a counter. FRONTAL: side to side movement. Think jumping jacks. TRANVERSE: rotational movement. Think swinging a golf club, or curtseying.  The twist. Rotational movements are small, but critically important. ARI’S ADVICE ON “TRAINING SMARTER:” “The greatest athletes are the ones who are naturally and effortlessly move their bodies through all three planes, through multi-dimensional space. Have you ever considered why a dancer or martial artist can flow so beautifully through space while a bodybuilder, rower or cyclist seems stiff, perhaps robotic? Look no further than the WAY THEY TRAIN, HOW MANY REPS THEY PERFORM IN A SINGLE PLANE OF MOTION. When making decisions about how to train smarter, make sure that training in three planes is one of the most important considerations in your program. THIS MEANS  INCLUDING ALL THREE PLANES IN YOUR STRENGTH, MOBILITY AND CARDIO TRAINING.” START YOUR DAY WITH A MOBILITY PREP Ari shares, “I always try to start my day–and my workouts–with a mobility prep that moves my body in three planes from head to toe.” He suggests that you follow these steps to do the same, PERFORMING EACH MOVEMENT FOUR TIMES: 1. “Start with the HEAD. Move it gently and fully, up and down, side to side and into rotation. 2. Next the SHOULDERS and ARMS. Straight arms up and down in front of the body, then side-to-side. While holding the arms out from the sides, twist one...

Our True Nature: Original Innocence by Cheryl Esposito Jun07

Our True Nature: Original Innocence by Cheryl Esposito...

Cheryl Esposito welcomes GP Walsh, author of The Tao of Allowing: Surfing on the Law of Attraction. Friday June 10, 2016 10:00 am Pacific Time A master meditation teacher and often called the Irreverent Sage, he asks: “Have you ever wondered: Why does self-help promise so much and deliver so little? Why is spiritual practice so damn hard? Why is the world messed up? Why do I keep working on myself and never get fixed?” Uh-huh. We thought so. GP Walsh wants to be sure we understand the sacred…the sacred is our true nature. He says we are born into “original innocence” –where all is possible, and we haven’t yet forgotten who we are. In that state, there’s no need for self-help. When people are looking outside of themselves for deep answers, he says “look closer” because the answers reside within. He recommends that we “begin the practice of allowing; surrender to the wisdom of what is.” So, how do you actually “do” that? Join Cheryl Esposito & GP Walsh to master the Tao of Allowing! Missed the Show at 10am? Listen to the rebroadcast at 10pm PST Pacific (1am Eastern) Past Episodes are available On Demand and Podcast Ready. CLICK HERE TO LISTEN Share This Show!...

Innovation: How to Make It a Predictable Business Process by Maureen Metcalf Jun06

Innovation: How to Make It a Predictable Business Process by Maureen Metcalf...

This blog is written as a companion to an “Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations” interview between Maureen Metcalf and Urko Wood: Innovation: How to Make It a Predictable Business Process Many leaders struggle with how to drive revenue growth. And yet we know, from study after study, that the key to successful growth is having a clear understanding of customers’ unmet needs. Even technology-driven companies, if they are going to be successful long-term, must understand and satisfy their customers’ needs. So a simple and reliable growth strategy is to discover your customers’ unmet needs and address them. Why, then, is this so hard? Why do so few companies do this successfully? The number one reason why companies don’t successfully execute this simple growth strategy is because there is widespread confusion about what a customer need really is. Many people mistakenly believe that customers have “latent unarticulated needs, needs they cannot articulate.” This is simply false when we understand what a customer need really is. Theodore Levitt said “People don’t want to buy a ¼ inch drill; they want a ¼ inch hole!” This quote reveals the difference between a need and a solution. The “drill” is just a solution, not a need. The solution could be a pick, a punch, a laser, or some yet-to-be-invented tool, but none of these are customer needs. True customer needs are functional, emotional, and/or social tasks that people want to accomplish and they are totally independent of solutions (how needs get met).  The task of “making a ¼ inch hole” is the true customer need. This thinking can be applied to any industry. For example, 1. P&G understands that “people don’t want to buy a mop; they want to clean the floor.” This enabled them to create Swiffer,...

Community College Education Outcomes, Using a 529 Plan to Pay for College, Greek Life Jun03

Community College Education Outcomes, Using a 529 Plan to Pay for College, Greek Life...

Much has been written lately about the amount of debt incurred by students pursuing bachelor’s degrees at four year institutions. But what about community college? We’ll welcome Jessica Braithwaite, a postdoctoral research associate at the Community College Research Center at Columbia University’s Teachers College, to the show to discuss whether or not this is a viable option for many students. Conscious Capitalism: What All Leaders Should Know by Maureen Metcalf Jun02

Conscious Capitalism: What All Leaders Should Know by Maureen Metcalf...

This blog is written as a companion to an “Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations” interview between Maureen Metcalf and Thea Polancic that aired on VoiceAmerica. Polancic is a managing partner of ClearSpace, LLC, a Chicago-based consulting firm that helps leaders, teams, and organizations grow and thrive. She is also the founder and executive director of the Chicago Chapter of Conscious Capitalism, Inc. As we talk about the trends we face between now and 2050, there are many challenges. According to a McKinsey study released in May 2016 summarizing its recent survey of global leaders, “Over the next five years, nearly all respondents expect a disruption in the global economy due to volatility. And they are much likelier now—43 percent, up from 29 percent in 2013—to expect that potential disruptions to the economy will be very severe. This is a greater share even than those who expected very severe disruptions in 2010, in the wake of the global financial crisis.” In this time of volatility where our once effective models for doing business are breaking down, we are seeing new models emerge that promise to alter how we look at business. On “Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations,” we have focused on the leader of the future and the organization of the future. One model we believe is very promising is Conscious Capitalism. As a person running a for-profit business with a greater mission, I am surprised by how many people have very negative comments about business. While I assume this is not a personal assault, it is hard to hear the level of anger directed at corporations and not see a larger systemic issue. So, in this blog and in the interview, I explored the pillars of Conscious Capitalism and how it can be implemented...

Pet funerals-Today I Would Officiate by Rabbi Mel Glazer...

Many years ago, when I was beginning my career as a Rabbi, the phone rang in my study. The following conversation took place: She: Hello, Rabbi, I have some terrible news (she said, crying) Me: What happened? She:  My dog died. When can we have the funeral? Me: (as gently as I could) Ruthie, I’m so sorry for your dog’s death. We don’t have funerals for animals, we only have them for humans. She: (as if she didn’t hear what I just told her, she was in shock): I know, but when can we have the funeral? The conversation continued, until she finally understood. Part of me wondered why she didn’t “get it,” and part of me wondered why I didn’t “get it.” I grew up with dogs. I loved them, I hugged them, I cuddled with them, I even got up at 5AM to walk them. I cried when one of them got run over and died, and I cried when the neighbor said our dog was too loud, and we had to give him away. I knew exactly how Ruthie felt. So why was this such a moment of anxiety for me? Answer: I was unwilling to symbolize the loss of her dog. My tradition said no funerals for animals, and that was that. Today, I know better. Today I know that when there arise life-and-death situations which remind us of how little real control we have in our lives, we create religious (or other) rituals to take back some of that control. It’s not everything, but it’s something. And it makes us feel better. Like when we return from a funeral. Pets are members of our families, sometimes they are the only ones we can talk to when we need emotional...

Sexuality and Imperious...

Every week, Express Yourself!™ will bring you a stimulating program based on a chapter from our award winning book Be the Star You Are!® for Teens. What is sexuality? Most people will immediately assume we are talking about engaging in a sexual act, however, sexuality is not just about sex. From birth until death, every person is a sexual being. Host Asya Gonzalez interviews Christian author, Heather Letto, about her Ascension series first book, Impervious. The residents of Impervious survived the War of Annihilation. And though the city is chockfull of pleasures to tantalize and entertain, a beast lurks in its corners. This Beast—a mysterious and terminal illness—has killed off most of Generations One, Two and Three. And as Gen-Four prepares to take the stage a provocative, yet questionable, new method to avoid an untimely death becomes a cultural rage. Sexuality is dealt with subtly and innocently in her novel.  The Gift of Sexuality by Cynthia Brian and Heather Brittany is read by Asya from the best seller, Be the Star You Are!® for Teens and Asya also reads the review of Impervious. Sexuality defines our gender and can be a complex aspect of our personality. It is how we feel about ourselves. Respect yourself! Guest Bio: Heather Letto Heather Letto was born in the hills of Ohio and raised in the ‘burbs of Chicago where she still lives… most of the time! In My Sister’s Garden – A Wistful Romp through a Drought Resistant Oasis by Cynthia Brian...

“Spring is the time of the year, when it is summer in the sun and winter in the shade.” – Charles Dickens One of the great things about growing up on a farm in the boondocks is that your tribe is your family. We five siblings were as thick as thieves as we climbed trees, worked the fields, pulled fences, drove tractors, branded cattle, and planted the spring garden. We played, we quarreled, and we dug in the dirt together. By the time May arrived, we ached to get our hands grubby in the vegetable patch. Waiting for the vegetables to sprout and be harvested taught us patience and responsibility. Of course, Mom’s beautiful flower gardens would already be abloom by this time of year getting us into constant trouble because we were forever picking bouquets not only for her, but, for teachers, 4-H leaders, and Sunday masses. As we grew into adults, our love of the earth grew as well. Following in the big shoes of my Father, my brother continued the family tradition of being a farmer and has one of the most beautiful vineyards in the county. Our Mother’s love of gardening instructed the gardens of her girls. Recently I walked with my sister Debbie through her eclectic garden. There is a saying that “you can take the girl out of the country, but you can never take the country out of the girl.”  With Deb, she’s never left the land where we were born.  She is a country cowgirl through and through. She’s always adorned with her cowboy hat, rodeo belt buckle, and boots! She hunts, fishes, grows her food, and would have relished being a pioneer in the 1870’s. Debbie and her husband are the ultimate recyclers and re-purposers....

Dr. Nick Martin and Rev. Linda Martin: A Different View of Ego – Transform the ego from being your enemy to being your friend. by Rebekah Campbell and Boyd Campbell May23

Dr. Nick Martin and Rev. Linda Martin: A Different View of Ego – Transform the ego from being your enemy...

In case you missed the show on May 23, listen to the recorded archive now! “Two Voices” reside within each of us: Ego and Spirit. The one you listen to will profoundly impact your life for better or worse. It will be reflected in the way you work with others, your close relationships, your ability to love yourself, achieve your potential and know your purpose, grow your mind, deal with change and manage conflict, cope with stressors and stress, and live with genuine happiness. An unconscious, imbalanced ego often shouts loudly through issues of power, flexibility or vulnerability and drowns out the softer, steadier voice of Spirit. The major challenge we face as humans is recognizing how our own distinctive unconscious egoic voice is drowning out the voice of Spirit. Join us as Dr. Nick Martin and Rev. Linda Martin share their strategy that can transform the ego from being your enemy to being your friend. It creates a partnership within you that allows you to hear the voice of Spirit and, in doing so, opens the door to EgoSpiritualism—a consciousness in which our healthy ego self has the ability to merge and unite with our Divine...

Cybersecurity — Thriving in a High-threat Environment: Five Key Tenants by Maureen Metcalf & Dr. Dale Meyerrose May23

Cybersecurity — Thriving in a High-threat Environment: Five Key Tenants by Maureen Metcalf & Dr. Dale Meyerrose...

This post reflects a collaboration between Dr. Dale Meyerrose, major general, U.S. Air Force (retired), president of the MeyerRose Group and Maureen Metcalf, founder and CEO of Metcalf & Associates, and is written in conjunction with an interview on VoiceAmerica aired on May 24, “Cybersecurity: Thriving in a High Threat Environment.” Dale sees “cyber” as much a language as the medium over which data flows. In turn, cybersecurity is about ensuring trust in virtual functions and services. One often thinks cybersecurity is the job of specialists working in an information technology (IT) services organization, or of analysts in the security shop. Yet, when something goes wrong, it cannot only affect the very health and reputation of an entire organization, but possibly its existence. Over the past five years, the headlines have been replete of examples of high-profile organizations and individuals who have had their data, records, and identity compromised by criminals, terrorists, governments, and “evil doers.” As a consequence, many have formed opinions based on impressions created by the media—many of those impressions may not be grounded in fact. So, what is the proper context? There’s a tendency to focus on the large number of compromised records in some of the more infamous cases, particularly involving retail and entertainment firms, and the U.S. government. Yet, these sensational cases aren’t necessarily the largest in numeric terms. We are familiar with these cases for reasons other than strictly the number of compromised records and/or identities. The publicity of these crises were likely for other reasons, such as participant notoriety, shock value, timing, potential liability, among other aspects. We tend to forget that cybersecurity issues exist in the context of the outside world and the human experience in general. Inserting “cyber,” or “e,” or “I” in front...

Joyce Bender’s Trip to Seoul with the State Department...

May 22, 2016 – written by Joyce Bender of Disability Matters: Today was the final day of my U. S. State Department International Information Program visit to meet organizations that focus on employing South Koreans with disabilities.  I have enjoyed every meeting, every presentation, every person I met, and my new friends from the embassy.  They make me proud to represent our country. Our first meeting of the day was with the Korean Employment Security Association for the Disabled to talk about employment and the Disability Equality Index (DEI) founded by the American Association of People with Disabilities and the US Business Leadership Network.  The 20 people in the room were all people with disabilities focused on creating employment opportunities, and all were very passionate about their work.  They want to learn from the U.S., about successful practices.  I spoke first and then I introduced Mary to explain the DEI.  Mary was part of the DEI Advisory Committee that worked to build this benchmarking tool that scores companies on their disability inclusion policies and practices. She gave a thorough presentation and answered many questions. At the end, we were in a group photo and all of sudden they all shouted—“Lead On.”  I was so shoGeon Hyeong and Joyce Bendercked!  I did not know that our friend from the State Department told them about Justin Dart’s famous words that I had taught at the Center for Independent Living earlier in the week in Changwon.  I was just overwhelmed! The group was so appreciative and very gracious. They escorted us out and were thanking us as we left the building. We left with the embassy delegates and went to a luncheon sponsored by Women with Disabilities Arts and Culture. We were with a small group...

Why Diversity Makes Sense In Our Global Economy! by Marcia Zidle May17

Why Diversity Makes Sense In Our Global Economy! by Marcia Zidle...

Diversity has to be more than a moral business imperative, but a catalyst to achieving business objectives. Not only are we in a global market where we must compete with people of different cultures and backgrounds. We must also recognize that the United States is now highly diverse and many of these groups have considerable economic power. The real question leaders and business owners have to ask is: How can we leverage the intellectual and creative ability of our diverse talent? Only then does diversity make sense. On this episode of The Business Edge, my guest Telvin Jefferies, answers that crucial question and many others about benefits and challenges of a managing a highly diverse workforce.  As a global chief Human Resources Officer, he has driven change in large companies and now is the CEO and Founder of Careergistics™ Listen to This Podcast and Learn: The new definition of diversity; it’s more inclusive and perceived as more fair; How to embrace diversity in the workplace without changing the way you operate your business; Current best practices in diversity that can be employed without added cost that will lead to big dividends; Why a well thought out diversity strategy is not just for big companies but also for start-ups and small companies; and the impact of generational differences, especially millennials, in your talent management and customer service initiatives. The key take away: Tap the brain power of all your employees. Regularly bringing a mix of people together (different age groups, different departments, different lengths of service, etc.) to focus on a current business problem. Realize that differences in experiences, thinking and approaches can lead to better solutions. If you feed them, appreciate them and recognize them you’ll be amazed at what results you’ll get. Maybe...

Executive Perspectives – Lessons That Drive Success by Maureen Metcalf May17

Executive Perspectives – Lessons That Drive Success by Maureen Metcalf...

This post focuses on lessons learned from several senior executive interviews on VoiceAmerica Radio. I want to thank everyone who was willing to participate; I have had the honor of talking to a range of highly accomplished executives from a variety of industries and backgrounds. Let’s start with an example of an employee whose experience mirrors of one of our top interviews: people drive your success. Susan walked into her new job and was delighted that on her first day, her intuition about accepting the position proved correct. She left a great job (on paper) to be part of a professional organization that would be a better fit. She’d been looking for a place where the leaders understood that taking care of their people caused the organization to actually be more efficient and effective. She’d had plenty of experience with organizations that gave lip service to employee engagement and becoming a best place to work, and yet, at the end of the day, she didn’t feel engaged. She felt harassed by ongoing assessments and pressure to deliver better scores rather than inspired by a true effort to improve the organization. Now she was the VP of Talent in an organization that genuinely treated people with respect. They recruited for mindset and offered ongoing training to ensure employees could meet the changing needs of the workplace. After doing the interviews, I wanted to see what themes emerged from the group and share with readers who may not have had the opportunity to listen to all interviews. Themes: 1. People differentiate your business and your ability to deliver on your unique brand as well as retain customers. Treat your people well and they will treat your clients well. Treat your people badly and they will be...

Being Awake and Fully Alive by Paula Joyce May11

Being Awake and Fully Alive by Paula Joyce...

Have you heard people say that we need to shift from a mode of Human Doings to Human Beings? In other words, we need to do less and be more. But how do you do that? We live in a world where we have to get things accomplished. Food has to be bought and prepared, someone has to work to pay the bills, etc. It feels like an unattainable fantasy. Cara Bradley in her book, On The Verge, takes the mystery out of it. She has developed some very specific ways that you can focus on being. Often we try to make things more complicated than is necessary. I once heard Wayne Dyer explain how simple it is to fit meditation into your day. He said, when you’re driving, you have to stop your vehicle at a red light several times during the course of the trip. He used those moments to meditate, to connect within. Easy and powerful. Please join us Thursday when Cara will provide you with some very simple and specific ways to experience life fully with more energy, enthusiasm, clarity and confidence....

Bad Bosses: Are You One? by Maureen Metcalf & Mike Morrow-Fox May11

Bad Bosses: Are You One? by Maureen Metcalf & Mike Morrow-Fox...

This blog post is co-written by Mike Morrow-Fox and Maureen as a companion to the VoiceAmerica recording on Bad Bosses. Bill comes into the office. He is swamped by the sheer volume of work he needs to accomplish –  preparing for a high-visibility client meeting, meeting with his executive leadership, and consolidating information to create his monthly reports. On top of this, he has seven highly competent direct reports. He’s grateful that his team is so effective, because it means he doesn’t need to spend much time with them. He really likes his team and wishes he could do more mentoring, but for now, he needs to keep his head down and get his work done. As we read in the article, his approach is actually ineffective because he is not actively engaging them. In a January 2016 article published in the Gallup Business Journal, ‘Gallup has been tracking employee engagement in the U.S. since 2000. Though there have been some slight ebbs and flows, less than one-third of U.S. employees have been engaged in their jobs and workplaces during these 15 years. According to Gallup Daily tracking, 32% of employees in the U.S. are engaged — meaning they are involved in, enthusiastic about and committed to their work and workplace. Worldwide, only 13% of employees working for an organization are engaged.’ Bosses play a major role in employee engagement and disengagement. Engaged bosses drive engagement, while disengaged bosses drive disengagement and, even, active disruption. Let’s start with a definition. What is the difference between a leader and a boss? Leaders set the cultural tone and strategic vision; bosses are the employee’s conduit to the larger organization. We understand that there are some obvious characteristics that would make anyone a bad boss, like throwing...
