Cheryl Esposito welcomes John Renesch, global futurist, humanitarian & author, passionate about business, human consciousness & possible scenarios for our future. His book The Great Growing Up: Being Responsible for Humanity’s Future is a Next Generation Indie Book Awards Grand Prize winner. A businessperson & CEO who started, ran, & sold enterprises, John says commerce is key in shifting human consciousness to create a future of possibility that will allow humanity to transcend the inevitable future being projected from current trends. We are future shapers. We play a role in how the world will be tomorrow, next year & coming generations. John’s challenge: give conscious thought to what we want, rather than passively sitting around while a random or even “accidental future” reveals itself. And, while we’re at it, stop pretending that what we are doing has no impact on the future. (Note to self: no excuses!) Tune...

How to Build a Brand People Can’t Resist. By Marcia Zidle Aug29

How to Build a Brand People Can’t Resist. By Marcia Zidle...

Branding is not your logo: it is how people perceive, understand, and react to your business. Branding helps people make decisions about you. But when your brand isn’t consistent or emotional, it can sabotage both your sales efforts and your leadership efforts. My guest on this episode of The Business Edge is Dacia Coffee, the CEO of The Marketing Blender, who helps companies achieve next-level growth by aligning the sales cycle with story, psychology and branding. She loves developing the message and directing the words that connect people to one another and inspire action. Listen to this podcast and learn:: The answers to the four key questions for your brand Examples of amazing brand and what makes them amazing; What’s your “truth” and why it’s so important for your customer How to create a “Buyer Persona” and use it for messaging and differentiation. The importance of consistency; everyone, not just marketing, must know and live your brand The key take away:The importance of your WHY! Branding is about determining the purpose of your business; knowing your customers and their pain points; and communicating what you provide and how you serve them better than others. It’s connecting the head (the facts and features) with the heart (the emotional tug) that makes them want to do business with you rather than someone else.   Tune...

So it wasn’t surprising that she introduced me to James Van Praagh by putting Talking to Heaven into my hands when my mother passed away. His book changed my life, opening doors in my mind that I am still exploring. Although my book shelf has gone through several rounds of down-sizing, his book remains in a place of honor. When Voice America invited me to host my own radio show, it was a given that James would be on my wish list of dream guests. That was a little over two years ago. Last week, a cricket was in my home for the first time in many years. I knew that its’ presence was significant. Crickets are...

Healing Abandonment, Heartbreak and Loss By Dr. Paula Joyce Aug26

Healing Abandonment, Heartbreak and Loss By Dr. Paula Joyce...

The word abandonment conjures up images of a mother leaving her baby on the church steps. In actuality, it means that and much more. All of us experience feelings of abandonment, loss and heartbreak from big loss, like sudden death or an unexpected divorce to small losses that chip away at our heart, bit by bit. The losses that we usually minimize or brush away include not being recognized for our successes, being excluded from a party or being ignored when we see a good friend out with someone else. If we do pay attention to these kinds of slights, people often say we’re too sensitive. Because most of us do not want to feel the pain of abandonment, loss or disappointment, we often skip over it or bury it. These unhealthy responses usually result in rage, numbness or depression. Acknowledging that the pain is real and needs to be addressed, sets us on a journey that allows us to feel and heal. Please join us Thursday to learn how to resolve abandonment and overcome self-sabotage. Susan Anderson is the author of The Abandonment Recovery Workbook, as well as Taming Your Outer Child and The Journey from Abandonment to Healing. The founder of the Outer Child and Abandonment Recovery movements, she has devoted the past 30 years of clinical experience and research to helping people resolve abandonment and overcome self-sabotage. Susan is a psychotherapist who through the abandonment recovery movement, offers a program of support groups and new techniques. She leads workshops across the country and reaches out through her website to bring her message of healing to abandonment survivors as well as clinicians. Please visit her online at...

The Business Interpretation of Performance: ENGAGEMENT – “The MAGIC of the Martial Arts of Business Series Aug26

The Business Interpretation of Performance: ENGAGEMENT – “The MAGIC of the Martial Arts of Business Series...

In this path of understanding how to apply Martial Arts principles into our business leaves, we need to know what engagement is and how to bring it into our companies and team members. Engagement can take many forms and as we advance in our deepest knowledge of what we do, we have to learn how to focus, how to make it happen, how to create an engagement environment and above all, how to inspire creativity from our people. This is the third part of what Winston Price and I have called ‘the Martial Arts of Business Series’. From the concept of intent to mind-shift we now come to learning how to be and become engaged. In other words, we will learn how to create an engaged organization. It is very important to anticipate and understand the market place and our businesses; as a result, we need to change our attitude, our vision and our Mind. Thus engaging better we can change our mindset and improve our performance. As we know, Martial Arts are systems and traditions of combat practices, which are practiced for a variety of reasons: self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, entertainment, as well as mental, physical, and spiritual development. Business and Entrepreneurship, on the other side, are a combination of creative activities that bring out innovation, competition and practices that generate the new ideas and concepts that bring us the best products and services into the market place. Combining them will require discipline, persistence, skills and a creative artist view. And we will be doing all of this focusing on performance, empowerment, motivation and a defining mindset in order to create a stronger level of ENGAGEMENT in our organizations. Develop the “The MAGIC of the Martial Arts of Business Series”. Performing...

This little monkey will keep you smiling as you watch my favorite actress Crystal, use her natural monkey talents to help a young girl find her true heart’s desire. This film is heartwarming, entertaining, funny and adorable all wrapped up into one great movie. One of my favorite things about this film is that no CGI is used. This film is very down to earth and it is good to get a break from all the amazing graphics taking over movie theaters today. There are ups and downs just like in real life and that is what makes this film endearing and believable. The acting in this is believable. I love all the different characters in this film, but my absolute favorite character is Gibby (Crystal, a capuchin monkey).  She is hysterical, cute and there when you need her. Crystal has...

Is Your Well-intended Project Oversight Actually Obstructing Progress? By Maureen Metcalf Aug23

Is Your Well-intended Project Oversight Actually Obstructing Progress? By Maureen Metcalf...

This post was written by guest blogger, Kathleen Starkoff, founder, president and CEO of Orange Star Consulting in conjunction with a VoiceAmerica  interview that on aired on August 23: How Can You Successfully Implement Large Scale Change? Most of us have had the occasion to be participants in, or witnesses to, complex mission-critical system-based projects like Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) conversions, company mergers, or acquisitions. Personally, I have engaged in hundreds of complex projects, and what often strikes me is the profound impact that overseeing executives can sometimes have that inadvertently complicates the effort. Have you observed any of these common oversight practices and their unfortunate consequences? • Single-dimension coaching is when one parameter, like the implementation date, formally or informally defines success. To be sure, the implementation date is often an important target established, presumably, with good reason. Further, on-time delivery represents a critical and challenging aspect of project management. A simple and emphatic message like “deliver on time” is compelling. When such a focus is established, well-communicated, and emphasized, one can assume that this primary focus will be achieved. Unfortunately, the primary parameter’s success is often achieved at the cost of lesser parameters, like poor quality or missed functionality, the sting of which lives on long after the implementation date. Leaders who coach from a balanced perspective—understanding and appreciating the inter-dependencies of dates, plans, scope, and resources—will encourage better holistic outcomes. Further, leaders who support a preemptive plan for talent, time, and/or financial contingencies for the inevitable unforeseen circumstance, at levels commensurate with the initiative’s complexity, channel the team’s energy solidly on execution. • Overly optimistic coaching is an environment where analysis and reporting tends to be unduly positive because influential leaders, who define the culture, value optimism. In project delivery, like...

How can a psychic medium help me heal By Dr. Mary Anne Chase...

Jennifer Henry is passionate about her ability to offer spiritual readings! A reading is a reflection of a person’s “inner process.” It will reflect back to them the deeper meaning behind whatever challenges they may be facing, and through that understanding, come to greater levels of self-love and compassion for others. Readings also offer reassurance about their soul’s journey, and guidance about their highest path and next steps.   They offer insights and understanding about whatever topic is on their mind, help them heal from hardships and loss, and also discover the emotional component that is contributing to health concerns. A spiritual reading also proves that there really is no such thing as death, and that our soul never dies....

The Stress Solution By Dr. Paula Joyce Aug19

The Stress Solution By Dr. Paula Joyce...

Stress is not the problem. Whether we react or choose to respond to stress is the key to solving the problem. There is no denying that stress is high and actually increasing in the USA and throughout the world. What is surprising is that a recent survey found that 53% of Americans do not get support from their doctors to manage their stress yet about 70% of doctor visits are stress-related. On top of this, we know that stress hormones cause long-term health problems like a lowered immune system, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, weight gain, depression and anxiety. Just like stress is not the problem, medication is not the answer. We must get to the root of the problem and solve it. Otherwise, the damage to our bodies is still happening under the surface on a continuous basis. What’s amazing is that we can actually solve the stress problem with empathy, eliminating the negative stories that we tell ourselves and other empowering tools. Please join us Thursday to learn how to de-stress. Arthur P. Ciaramicoli, EdD, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist and the chief medical officer of Soundmindz.org, a popular mental health platform with 42,000 registered users and an annualized download rate of 150,000 for three apps Ciaramicoli has developed. Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations By Maureen Metcalf Aug18

Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations By Maureen Metcalf...

This post reflects a collaboration between Dr. Dale Meyerrose, major general, U.S. Air Force (retired), president of the MeyerRose Group and Maureen Metcalf, founder and CEO of Metcalf & Associates, and is written in conjunction with a VoiceAmerica interview that aired on August 16, “Emerging Roles of the Board and Cybersecurity.” Many aspire to join boards, and other leaders aspire to manage their boards in order to promote organizational success. Much has been written about responsibilities of boards of directors, but few distinguish those task lists from the essential roles of a board and its directors. By understanding those few, basic requirements of a board, the savvy leader can maximize effectiveness in driving organizational success. Dan walked into the board meeting to discuss the company’s performance and strategy going forward. He was confident that this would be a smooth meeting because he meets regularly with board members and has a clear understanding of their values and past guidance. As a veteran CEO, he understands the importance of working closely with his board and that progress means that the entire senior leadership team is working from the same “sheet of music.” Key to his success as a senior corporate official is to comprehend everyone’s role and anticipate the board’s needs as they work together to ensure the organization’s success. So, what does Dan know regarding “board basics” and roles that allow him to have this confidence? 1. He understands the importance of a collective corporate conscience. Board members must ensure that the entire organization acts in a socially responsible and ethical manner. While it is true that public corporations have the primary goal to deliver stockholder value and create sustained value, they must also act in a legal and responsible manner in the process. We...

The Gift of Talk By Cynthia Brian...

Every week, Express Yourself!™ will bring you a stimulating program based on a chapter from our award winning book Be the Star You Are!® for Teens.  “The human voice is the most beautiful instrument of all, but the most difficult to play.” Are you a talker? Do you know how to communicate effectively? Veteran reporter of Health Rap, Alex Pawlakos, joins hosts Asya Gonzalez and Brigitte Jia about how important it is to communicate with your doctor. A doctor can correctly diagnose your symptoms, arrive at a conclusion and a course of treatment, but only if you TALK to him or her. In a world where actions speak louder than words, Artist Jenna Rose Simon proves that the healing act of art and the written word can speak volumes when seen through the eyes of those in need of healing. It rekindles our passions, arouses our senses, and keeps us in shape.  Gardening is a terrific activity for maintaining joint flexibility, bone density, range of motion, and most of all quality of life. We have to garden wisely, however, if we don’t want to be complaining about aches, pains, bug bites, cuts, and injuries, of which I’ve had more than enough to last my lifetime. Do a good deed for yourself and heed some handy, healthy tips to safer, happy gardening experience. If you are already a gardener, you know the joys and benefits. For those who are about to begin, get ready for a strenuous workout with the music, smells, and tastes of nature. Getting Going 1. If you have any injuries or illnesses, like all activities, consult your physician before beginning. 2. Choose a time of day where you can dedicate an hour or so to the task. 3. Wear a hat, sun block, gloves, and comfortable clothing. 4. Warm up your body with a few stretches or a brisk walk before beginning. 5. Despite your enthusiasm, pace your work and avoid being in the same position for extended periods. For example, if you are weeding, switch to pruning after 45 minutes. 6. Use a hand truck to move large, heavy sacks, and potted plants. 7. Keep your feet on the ground when cutting limbs or harvest fruit. Use a ladder only when you have a spotter. 8. Use the best tools that are strong, yet lightweight. 9. Give your back a break. Too much twisting and bending can cause strain. Consider raised beds as...

Business – Its An Ever Moving Story! What Makes a Great Customer Experience? By Marcia Zidle...

Business – like life is always changing. When your business is dealing with customers’ life changes, for example moving them from one place to another whether it’s across town or across the world, you need to keep a cool head, a caring heart and project management hands. My guest on this episode of The Business Edge is Francey Beall, one of the owners of Fantastic Moves. Francey knows each customer’s move represents a significant transition in their life. She tells how she and her management team have built a culture that truly cares about the customer’s experience. Here moto is Happy Employees = Satisfied Customers….but really we want them to say it was Fantastic …not just satisfied. Listen to this podcast and learn: How her motto is translated daily in doing business the “fantastic” way;why marketplace changes lead to the rebranding of their business that was doing well; their hiring method: Selecting employees who are both skilled and have the right attitude; the way to build a culture that truly cares about the customer’s experience: I can attest to that because I was a recent customer; and how the three owners work as a team aligning priorities and responsibilities which results in a better work environment and a better bottom line. The key take away: Take care of the employee who will take care of the customer. Make sure employees are in positive frame of mind especially if they are the interface between the customer and the company. If a valued employee comes in worried about a water bill that’s due today and they don’t have the money, pay it for them. Discuss later how they may pay you back. What you want is an employee who is totally focused on satisfying the customer...

ENGAGEMENT: The MAGIC of the Martial Art of Business Series Part #3 Aug11

ENGAGEMENT: The MAGIC of the Martial Art of Business Series Part #3...

ENGAGEMENT: The MAGIC of the Martial Art of Business Series Part #3 We already know that creating an excellent team requires dedication, training, commitment and a shared vision. We also need to engage our team members and align them with what we, as managers or business owners, want to achieve in our companies. We need to learn how to engage our employees so they become team members; how we change their mindset so they work on improving on a continuous basis and how to include a new level of thinking and creativity into what they do. At the end, we have an engaged team that delivers better products and services. This is what we all need to achieve. And we will be doing all of this focusing on performance, empowerment, motivation and a defining mindset in order to create a strong MIND-SHIFT. Join Winston Price and Luis Vicente Garcia in this second part of the “The MAGIC of Martial Arts of Business Series”, as we explore how ENGAGEMENT will be a crucial part of your growth and success and we will guide you to create Magic in your company and develop “The MAGIC of the Martial Arts of Business Series”. Christine Hassler is the author of 20 Something, 20 Everything; The 20 Something Manifesto; and the national bestseller Expectation Hangover: Free Yourself from Your Past, Change Your Present and Get What You Really Want, which was recently released in a new paperback edition. She left her successful job as a Hollywood agent to pursue a life she could be passionate about. For over a decade she has been sharing her passion to ease suffering on the planet as a speaker, retreat facilitator and life coach. Christine believes once we get out of our own way, we can show up to make the meaningful impact we are here to make. Visit her online at http://www. christinehassler.com. Disappointment can rule our life, drain our energy and keep us stuck in destructive emotions like: bitterness, anger, regret, blame, shame, guilt. Alternatively, we can ask questions like: What am I learning? How am I growing? What doors opened when that one closed? We have a choice. We can let our emotions overwhelm us or we can take charge of our life. Some of us have learned to rush past disappointment with platitudes like, Life Happens. Maybe you are in acceptance or maybe you’re burying feelings you don’t want to acknowledge. If it’s the latter, that pain will continue to hurt you until you face it. I have learned to use my disappointments to heal, grow and change my life. Whether it was leaving a marriage, jobs, friendships, volunteer positions or organizations, when I asked meaningful questions and allowed myself to look deeply within, I was able to let go of the past and live in the joyful present. Please join us Thursday to learn how you, too, can transform your life....

Jean Houston is a legend in her own time. To say she is forward thinking is an understatement. A true visionary for what is (beyond the obvious), and what can be, she speaks to the complexity of our times as being an indicator rather than a problem. HOW TO WRITE A PROFESSIONAL-LEVEL BOOK THAT WILL SELL By Hemda Mizrahi & Janet Spencer King Aug10

HOW TO WRITE A PROFESSIONAL-LEVEL BOOK THAT WILL SELL By Hemda Mizrahi & Janet Spencer King...

Independent book editor and publishing expert Janet Spencer King  joined me on “Turn the Page” to discuss how to become a published author.” In this post, Janet offers additional advice to help make your book a success! WILL MY BOOK BE A SUCCESS? Janet shares, “Just about every client I have ever had asks me the Big Question: “Will my book be a success?” No one can answer this question upfront; there simply isn’t a way to determine if a book—however good it is—will do well. However, there are several factors to keep in mind when you decide to write and publish your book. Fiction writers need to keep writing! Most first-time fiction authors can’t expect to sell many books. But we fiction readers are a greedy bunch—when we find an author whose work we like, we want more. Authors who hang in there, writing another and yet another novel, have a much better chance of being discovered. It may not be until the third or even fourth book, but once success starts creeping in, readers are apt to go back to purchase your previous titles. The beauty of being a self-published writer is that your books live on in perpetuity unlike traditionally published ones, most of which are pulled off the market well within the first year. Many non-fiction writers have the advantage of an existing platform that will help sell their book. Given that non-fiction is often based on a successful business, or expertise in particular areas, these authors may already be doing presentations, holding workshops, and in other ways meeting people who are in their reader niche. Read books in your genre that are currently popular—you’ll find out how to handle many areas in your own book by learning what other authors...

The Gift of Survival By Cynthia Brian...

Every week, Express Yourself!™ will bring you a stimulating program based on a chapter from our award winning book Be the Star You Are!® for Teens. “Sometimes you have to get knocked down lower than you have ever been, to stand up taller than you ever were.” Hosts Asya Gonzalez and Brigitte Jia welcome Health Rap Reporter, Alex Pawlakos and Book Smart Reporter, Maria Wong as well as special guest Dr. Kyra Mesich to talk about survival. Alex focuses on the health benefits of happiness, meditation, humor, support of friends, walking in nature, and prayer as part of survival strategies. Patients that cope the best with illness are those who learn to take control of their lives and find the joys that still exist in their lives. After receiving her doctoral degree, Kyra Mesich, PsyD went on a quest to understand sensitivity from a truly holistic perspective leading her to study extensively in the field of integrative health. She is the author of The Strength of Sensitivity. She talks about surviving sensitivity to be empathetic through holistic, intuitive healing, and emphasizes the importance of listening to your inner voice. Maria shares her favorite summer read, Lily King’s novel, Euphoria, which primarily focuses on the struggle to survive by three anthropologists in the 1930’s in Papua New Guinea.  The book is suited for adults and mature teenagers ranging from 14-18 as it covers gruesome topics including brute violence and cannibalism. The standard dictionary definition of survival is the state or fact of continuing to live or exist, typically in spite of an accident, ordeal, or difficult circumstances. Maria believes that survival includes the ability to bounce back and learn something from your experiences. Trust your gut. Be a survivor. Guest Bio: Kyra Mesich, PsyD...

Is This My Shirt…Really? By Ariel & Shya Kane Aug05

Is This My Shirt…Really? By Ariel & Shya Kane...

Is This My Shirt…Really? By Ariel Kane In the summer of 2013, we were in Cambridge, England, leading a series of seminars when Shya unexpectedly had a dramatic episode that we later discovered was an extremely rare condition. Other people who went through this type of episode have generally viewed it as a deeply upsetting, fearful event. But fortunately for the two of us, being present and taking things moment-by moment had prepared us to deal with this circumstance with humor and ease. This is what happened from Ariel’s point of view: Many of us dream about having the ability to live in the moment, to drop our story and discover the world anew. Shya and I had that experience. Well, Shya did, but that doesn’t mean he remembers it. It started on a Wednesday in Cambridge, England. Shya and I were scheduled to lead a seminar about Instantaneous Transformation for a local group that evening and we had some “afternoon delight” followed by a nap. We thought we would feel refreshed, but it didn’t work out the way we had planned. We were lounging in bed, enjoying a bit of post-coital languor, drowsy and sated and drifting toward sleep. Lying on our left sides, I had placed Shya’s hand on my shoulder. Several weeks prior I’d had shoulder surgery and I was still feeling its effects. His hand was warm and soothing on the ache and our conversation would have been largely forgotten had things not taken a sharp turn. “Ariel,” Shya said, “when you had your shoulder surgery, I know we spent the night in an apartment but I can’t remember where it was.” “Neither can I,” I replied. “How did we get that apartment?” he asked. “Through the hospital.” “What was...

EXPAND YOUR BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT BEYOND REFERRALS THROUGH STRATEGIC DIGITAL ADVERTISING CAMPAIGNS By Hemda Mizrahi and Jim Hohl Aug03

EXPAND YOUR BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT BEYOND REFERRALS THROUGH STRATEGIC DIGITAL ADVERTISING CAMPAIGNS By Hemda Mizrahi and Jim Hohl...

How can you build and sustain a steady volume of satisfied customers? Jim Hohl, CEO and Co-Founder of Visify, a New York City-based digital advertising agency, joined me on “Turn the Page” to share how you can transform your P&L by meeting prospective clients where they are in their readiness to buy! Listen to our conversation to learn about the approaches that have worked well for his own business, and to benefit from Jim’s special offer for listeners of “Turn the Page!” This post expands on the advice that Jim provided during the show. Here’s what he added to help you advance your marketing results: FOCUS YOUR MARKETING EFFORTS ON YOUR IDEAL CLIENT “When business owners are asked to identify their ideal clients, they often say “I can sell my widget or service to anyone.” Marketing to “everyone” is a losing game for two big reasons: 1) you literally cannot afford to do it – there are just too many people to reach and trying to do so will quickly bankrupt you, and 2) your message won’t resonate with everyone. Do you think the message Rolls Royce uses would appeal to Hyundai buyers, even though they both ostensibly sell the same product? Absolutely not. Having an ideal client avatar in mind does not mean that you won’t sell to those who do not fit that profile; it means that you won’t ACTIVELY MARKET to them. HOW CAN YOU FIND A MESSAGE THAT WILL RESONATE WITH YOUR IDEAL CLIENTS? Jim recommends creating a grid that identifies their “before” and “after” states for the following: WHAT THEY HAVE (e.g., for a massage therapist: sore feet > relaxed feet), HOW THEY FEEL (frustrated > rejuvenated), WHAT THEIR AVERAGE DAY IS LIKE (moving around is painful, so they...

The most dangerous former operative of the CIA is drawn out of hiding to uncover hidden truths about his past. “Why would he come back now?” CIA Director Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones). KIDS FIRST! Film Critic Gerry O. comments, “What happens when you are impressed by emotional acting, an exciting soundtrack and heart-thumping stunts? You get the perfect action thriller.” See his full review below. Jason Bourne By Gerry O., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, Age 14   What happens when you are impressed by emotional acting, an exciting soundtrack and heart-thumping stunts? You get the perfect action thriller –  next installment in the Jason Bourne series. This dramatic action film doesn’t contain one single joke and it is not a romance flick either. The characters experience multiple adventures and is a non-stop action-filled film  with an exciting scene at least every three minutes, keeping the viewer engaged the whole way through.   Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) has taken to boxing matches for money, but everything changes when a friend of his, Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles) comes to him with a flash drive filled with top-secret CIA information. Jason goes on a dangerous adventure where he loses friends, makes new enemies, finds old ones and more all to uncover his past when he was part of the CIA and what happened to him. This story may sound confusing if the viewer is unfamiliar with previous Bourne stories. Although you can guess what happened in previous events as the film attempts to explain what Matt’s character is trying to achieve,...

Endgame – Based on a true story that will stimulate a multitude of emotions By Morgan B....

Chess doesn’t gather nearly the audience that head bashing sports do, but every now and then the film industry turns to this highly intellectual sport for inspiration. Endgame follows 5-year-old Jose (Rico Rodriguez, Modern Family) who has learned how to play chess like his grandfather and joins the Brownsville school team where he has the chance to use his skills and, for once in his life, find himself in the spotlight. Based on a true story, this film will touch your heart and perhaps inspire you to indulge in the game. KIDS FIRST! Film Critic Morgan B. comments, “This film is a wonderful combination of emotions – one minute you are sad and crying, then the next you are happy and laughing.” Benjamin P. adds, “Endgame is an interesting film with some good characters and memorable performances, but the plot could use a little work.” See their full reviews below. Endgame Reviewed by Morgan B., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, age 11 https://youtu.be/31KmOydJpsg   Chess, the game that is so simple, yet so complex and difficult is coming to your TV screen in this great film called Endgame on DVD. This film is a wonderful combination of emotions – one minute you are sad and crying, then the next you are happy and laughing. I love that the film does this and that it really makes you feel like you are there.   The acting in this film is very well executed, but my favorite character is Jose (Rico Rodriguez) who is one of the stars of Modern Family. He is goodhearted and loves to play chess just like his grandmother or Abuelita in Spanish (Ivonne Coll) who starts teaching him the game of chess at the age five. Jose is going through a tough...

Improve Development Plan Impact by Completing Reflection Questions By Maureen Metcalf...

This blog is a companion to the interview series with Christopher and Sheila Cooke on the VoiceAmerica Business Leadership show “Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations.” This four-part series, “Leaders Building Self-Awareness by Stepping Through the Worldview Membrane: Learning to Engage Your Organization,”. The third interview Hidden Insights the Flow in the Gap a conversation talking to two accomplished leaders who took the LeaderView Assessment about their results and how to interpret them to build on their success. This conversation includes a discussion on how their specific data helps them discover their leadership strengths and biases. As we listen to the leaders, Carla and Jim talk about their assessment results and how they will use the results of their 360 degree assessments to have conversation with those providing input. For those following the conversation and building your own development plan, I wanted to provide additional materials.  If you take the LeaderView Assessment, you will receive an interpretation manual as part of the package. The reflection questions below are intended as a follow-on to the blog post that provided the assessment for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT). This exercise provides an opportunity to apply a structured reflection process we use throughout the Innovative Leadership series.  We believe reflection is a critical skill for leaders and this exercise is designed to provide you valuable information as well as building this key skill. Once you complete your SWOT analysis it is time to further clarify your direction using reflection questions. Our reflection questions follow a consistent format. We recommend that you define your intentions, actions, culture, and systems using the following questions: • “What do I think/believe?” reflects your intentions, • “What do I do?” reflects your actions, • “What do we believe?” reflects the culture of...

Preparing for What’s Next: Leveraging Your Company’s Life Cycle By Marcia Zidle Aug01

Preparing for What’s Next: Leveraging Your Company’s Life Cycle By Marcia Zidle...

Here’s one of those simple, but profound questions, entrepreneurs need to regularly ask: What am I focusing on now vs. what should I be focusing on NOW? After a successful launch, entrepreneurs have a choice. They can sit back and continue doing what they have done so far or they can recognize the need to prepare for what comes next. Too often entrepreneurs make the wrong choice to stay the course using the logic “why mess with success.” Why You Should Mess With Success! My guest on this episode of The Business Edge is Dr Mary Lippttt, author of Brilliant or Blunder: 6 Ways Leaders Navigate Uncertainty, Opportunity and Complexity. As an internationally recognized leader in strategic thinking and executing change, Mary tells why there’s good reason for entrepreneurs to refocus their priorities based on changing realities. And one of those realities is that 50% of new businesses fail. Therefore, successful entrepreneurs must change what they do and how they do to have sustainable growth. Listen to this podcast and learn: Why knowing your company’s life cycle helps you focus on what’s important; the six result-driven mindsets and how they impact an entrepreneurs decision making; how to avoid leadership blind spots and distractions to make smarter strategic decisions; how to use specific mindsets to build an aligned and committed team that’s ready for change; when to use your gut and when not when dealing with uncertainty, opportunity or complexity. The key takeaway: To prevent getting stuck with a single viewpoint, your leadership should encourage diversity of thought and openness to new perspectives. Therefore build a team that can tap into the six different mindsets especially in uncertain and complex situations. Don’t fall back on the tried and true.  Mess with...

It is a manifesto for a “transpartisan America.” Stephen’s years of researching and preparing for this book brought him to what today may seem like an unlikely worldview – some may call it magical thinking. Dinan’s solution calls for each side of the two party political system to grow up and evolve, rather than vilify each other and fight. We must move toward embracing a sacred vision of national unity. Can you imagine all political perspectives being held as a valuable yet incomplete contribution toward the emerging whole? Buzz On! By Cynthia Brian...

By Cynthia Brian *I am weary of swords and courts and kings.  Let us go into the garden and watch the minister’s bees.   Mary Johnston There is a symphony playing daily in my garden. While my husband turns on the stereo to listen to his favorite tunes, I merely open my door or window to hear the melodic concert of nature. My favorite musicians include the thousands of bees buzzing, hummingbirds bustling, birds singing, frogs croaking, water trickling, owls hooting, and crickets chirping. Sometimes the hawks or turkey vultures swoop low with the sound of their flapping wings creating a “whoosh, whoosh” like a strong base. The orchestra changes by the minute as the pollinators search for nectar that produces one out of every three bites we consume. This week as I was sitting on my porch putting on my boots, a hummingbird came to inspect the red mandevilla blooms next to me, then, rapidly moved to hover three inches from my nose for about ten seconds. It was a magical moment photographed in my mind. With much of summer spent outdoors, I’ve had individuals tell me that they don’t like to be in their gardens because of their fear of bee bites. Honeybees, bumble bees, and other native bees are passive as they busily forage. They are not interested in humans and will only sting to defend themselves. With the thousands of bees serenading in my landscape, the only times I have been stung is when I’ve tried to rescue a bee from a swimming pool, fountain, or other water feature. (Of course, if you are allergic to bees, it’s always good to have an updated pen of epinephrine on hand.) Yellow jackets are meat eaters. Although these black and yellow carnivorous...

The Ghosts of Christmas Past: How Retailers Can Avoid a Repeat of 2015’s Challenging Holiday Season – Part 2 What to Do Now Jul21

The Ghosts of Christmas Past: How Retailers Can Avoid a Repeat of 2015’s Challenging Holiday Season – Part 2 What...

This post is written by David S. DuBose, Director of Supply Chain Solutions, Sedlak This three-part series explores a number of near-term and long-term moves retailers can make to eliminate or minimize holiday season fulfillment headaches and ensure their supply chain is up to the task. In part one of the series, we identified the issues retailers faced during the holiday season of 2015. Specifically, retailers were unequipped to handle the surge in online sales and a prolonged holiday shopping season. In this second section of the series, we detail the specific actions retailers should take now to improve their operative efficiency and achieve success. Retailers should start by analyzing the 2015 season’s volumes to understand where things broke down. Two dimensions, in particular, are important to explore: 1. One is product flow: How does merchandise flow through the network? What are the routings? How does it get from factories through the distribution network—and how does this add to or limit flexibility? 2. The other is capacity: What are the capacity and flexibility of the different nodes in the network—the central DC, regional DCs, and any consolidation points or pooled distribution points? Did carriers and suppliers provide sufficient capacity? Other important capacity levers to analyze include pick faces, throughput, parking, storage areas, staging, and sorters/conveyors. Ideally, this analysis should be done at the SKU level (or, at minimum, the product group level) so a retailer can fully understand the amount of space needed in the DC for each item’s slot. Such insights can indicate whether the projected product flow for the upcoming season will overwhelm the DC’s ability to store and fulfill product. In some cases, spreadsheets will do the trick. But for a growing number of retailers whose network complexity has mushroomed, more...

CASTING YOURSELF AS THE HERO OR HEROINE OF YOUR LIFE STORY by Hemda Mizrahi and Nicole Cutts Jul20

CASTING YOURSELF AS THE HERO OR HEROINE OF YOUR LIFE STORY by Hemda Mizrahi and Nicole Cutts...

Success Coach and Clinical Psychologist Nicole Cutts, Ph.D., joined me on “Turn the Page” to discuss the benefits of seeing your life as a hero or heroine’s quest, and how to clarify and achieve your vision of success. Dr. Cutts is the author of “The Adventures of Isabelle Book I: The Embryo Goddess and the Morpho,” a heroine’s quest adventure novel with a purpose. CASTING YOURSELF AS THE HERO OR HEROINE OF YOUR LIFE STORY Dr. Cutts states, “Have you thought about how much easier your life would be if you were a super hero? I know I have. Think of all the great super hero powers there are! Flight, invisibility, extraordinary strength, and one of my favorites, the ability to breath under water like Aquaman. Although it’s not realistic for humans to be super heros, we can all be heros or heroines if we choose to be. While being a heroine does not come with super powers, it does come with special abilities and great advantages. Even if your life does not become a literary work, you are writing your own life story, so why not cast yourself as a heroine or hero of this story?” YOU AND YOUR VISION: A COSMIC MATCHMAKING PROCESS! She shares, “A VISION is an idea, state of being or concept that you have regarding what you “want” in your life, or what you want your life to be. This phenomenon has been referred to by other terms, such as dreams, callings or aspirations, to name a few.  Human beings experience feelings of want, longing or desire toward a vision. I view the union of a vision and a person as a COSMIC MATCHMAKING process! My Vision Realization Continuum (VRC) model asserts that both you and the vision...

Building Leadership Success- Using Assessment Results to Increase Effectiveness by Maureen Metcalf Jul20

Building Leadership Success- Using Assessment Results to Increase Effectiveness by Maureen Metcalf...

This blog is a companion to the interview series with Christopher and Sheila Cooke on the VoiceAmerica Business Leadership show “Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations.” This four-part series, “Leaders Building Self-Awareness by Stepping Through the Worldview Membrane: Learning to Engage Your Organization,” begins July 12. The second interview is a conversation that talks about spotting the patterns, talking to two accomplished leaders who took the LeaderView Assessment about their results and how to interpret them to build on their success. This conversation includes a discussion on how their specific data helps them discover their leadership strengths and biases. As we listen to the leaders, Carla and Jim talk about their development goals, I wanted to provide companion information to leaders who are following along. If you take the LeaderView Assessment, you will receive an interpretation manual as part of the package. Following is the development process we use in the Innovative Leadership Fieldbook and Workbook series. Research since the late 1970’s has shown that such biases are actually the basis of your leadership strengths. Through a process of assessment and self-discovery, leaders build self-awareness, learn what it means to step through the worldview membrane, and learn how to dramatically increase engagement in their organizations. After taking the LeaderView Assessment, and others you might find valuable such as the Metcalf & Associates assessments for resilience and innovative leadership, along with integrating information from other sources such as performance appraisals it is time to synthesize what you have learned about yourself. We recommend using a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats worksheet (SWOT) shown below. We invite you to complete your own SWOT analysis. Keep in mind that your strengths and weaknesses tie back to your vision for yourself from last week’s post. We are very excited...

If You Get Upset Try Saying Yes! by Ariel & Shya Kane Jul18

If You Get Upset Try Saying Yes! by Ariel & Shya Kane...

If You Get Upset Try Saying Yes! an excerpt from Practical Enlightenment by Ariel & Shya Kane People often erroneously think that once they wakeup, transform, have an enlightening event or series of events that they will never get upset again. There is also a misconception that years of looking at your life buys you something and that you should have permanent relief from getting disturbed. Getting upset is not a failing, but to the mind that wishes to “get somewhere,” the mind that wishes to achieve enlightenment, it is. Have you ever said to yourself: I thought I was over that already I don’t like being upset I hate this I don’t wanna be upset Those thoughts are all about resisting this moment of now and being a No to how your life is showing up. Most of us have the idea that enlightenment and transformation will save us from the domination of our lives. We think that if we become enlightened we’ll have power over sickness, fatigue and getting upset. So we strive to calm our minds, quiet the voice in our heads and gain control over our environment. Here is the good news and the bad news: You have no control over how life shows up. It’s bad news if you’re trying to be in control because life doesn’t really care what you want. The good news is that you can discover how to be a Yes to how your life is unfolding in the moment and then miraculously, disturbing forces cease to disturb. The paradox is that you have no control, yet when you are a Yes to your life, you have ultimate control because what is happening becomes your choice. But you can’t do being a Yes in order...

DIGITAL MARKETING TIPS FOR ENTREPRENEURS AND SMALL BUSINESSES by Hemda Mizrahi and Doug Motel Jul18

DIGITAL MARKETING TIPS FOR ENTREPRENEURS AND SMALL BUSINESSES by Hemda Mizrahi and Doug Motel...

SEO and Social Media Coach Doug Motel, Founder of Site Optimized joined me on “Turn the Page” to discuss how to build brand recognition and attract qualified traffic to your website. Our conversation focused on resources that the Internet offers FREE OF CHARGE to improve SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION. Listen on demand to learn more. As a bonus after the show, Doug shared insights on COMMON MISTAKES that entrepreneurs and small business owners make in their marketing efforts: POOR QUALITY PROFILE PICTURES ON SOCIAL MEDIA “If your logo has an image of your building and the company sign, chances are it will not work well as a profile picture on Facebook or other social media platforms. The reason? When you are posting on your feed, or contributing to a conversation on someone else’s feed, your photo is resized to a very small square, possibly as tiny as 50 x 50 pixels (about 0.5 inches x 0.5 inches). No matter how much you love your business card logo, verify that it is legible when reduced to a small square before using it on social media.” GO BEYOND POSTING MARKETING-RELATED UPDATES: SHARE COMPELLING CONTENT THAT YOUR TARGET MARKET WILL LOVE “Being viewed as a valuable resource and attracting followers to your social media sites requires that you share great curated content, as well your own content. Curated content includes press, articles, blogs, or videos that your audience really needs to see. If your followers can count on YOU to be the clearinghouse for important information, they will be happy to consider your other (more mercenary) updates as well.” PROVIDE A CALL TO ACTION “If you are going to direct people to your website (which I recommend highly) or other places where your original content is sitting, suggest that they...

Hot, Hot, Hot by Cynthia Brian...

By Cynthia Brian “There shall be eternal summer in the grateful heart.” ~ Celia Thaxter When it’s hot outside, I want to be in the garden.  I find it challenging to sit in my office writing articles or producing radio shows when nature beckons me to be nurturing the earth. In summer I spend several hours of every single day digging in the dirt whether it’s early in the morning or after dusk because my chores are never finished.  My gardening wardrobe usually consists of my bathing suit and shorts allowing me a quick cool down with a spray from the garden hose.  As my daughter was working in her garden in her bikini she telephoned to declare that she was carrying on our family tradition. “I realize I come from a long line of bikini gardeners, “ she giggled.  I thought of titling my next gardening book, The Bikini Gardener, but then perhaps readers would expect to see beautiful bikini clad bodies instead of gorgeous gardens. I promise not to be photographed! Baby, it’s hot outside and we gardeners have work to do.  We have to be water conscious, yet we see the bare spots in our landscape and yearn to make our personal paradise a more beautiful place. What are our options? Planting annuals and perennials offer the answers to filling in those areas that just never seem to seed well.  Between the turkeys, deer, and raccoons, our landscapes have many hurdles to overcome and I’m determined to continue to find ways to succeed. Here are a few of my favorite recommendations for adding sparkle, individuality, and excitement without the extra water and work this season. ⎫ Sun loving vinca (Catharanthus roseus) crave six hours of sunlight a day and do well...

The Ghosts of Christmas Past: How Retailers Can Avoid a Repeat of 2015’s Challenging Holiday Season Part 1 – The Challenges of 2015 Jul14

The Ghosts of Christmas Past: How Retailers Can Avoid a Repeat of 2015’s Challenging Holiday Season Part 1 – The...

This is a guest post by David S. DuBose, Director of Supply Chain Solutions, Sedlak This three-part series explores a number of near-term and long-term moves retailers can make to eliminate or minimize holiday season fulfillment headaches and ensure their supply chain is up to the task. By most measures, the 2015 holiday season was one many retailers would like to forget. For starters, sales for the season in the United States were underwhelming, increasing by a less-than-expected 3 percent to $626.1 billion. But an even bigger problem was that operational challenges caused many retailers to have trouble satisfying customers shopping their online stores. They were frequently out of stock. One study revealed out-of-stock rates on Cyber Monday were at an all-time high, with 13 out of 100 product views showing an out-of-stock message—over twice the normal rate. Other data showed a similar problem: Thirty-five percent of online sales volume went toward retailers’ Thanksgiving Day sales, leading to “a lot more out of stocks” on Black Friday than expected. They also had difficulty delivering online orders. According to one study, it took an average of nearly seven days, or 20 percent longer than the previous year, for orders placed on Cyber Monday to arrive. The same study found unexpected delays in 9 percent of the United Parcel Service ground orders analyzed, suggesting a network under duress. And UPS’s on-time delivery rate for ground packages fell to 91 percent the week of Cyber Monday, down from 97 percent a year ago. What Was the Problem? Why the struggles? The biggest reason was retailers’ inability to accommodate the surge in online shopping, which continues to wreak havoc with retailers’ shipping. For the first time, more U.S. shoppers in 2015 bought online (103 million) than in stores...
