Heal Your Body With Your Voice by Paula Joyce Apr27

Heal Your Body With Your Voice by Paula Joyce...

We all know the power of voice. Some voices are so beautiful that they can transport us, uplift our moods or bring us to tears. But voice is even more than we think it is. AT&T said that BioAcoustics is the medicine of the future. BioAcoustics Voice Spectral Analysis is a new process that can detect hidden or underlying stresses in the body that are expressed as disease. It can identify toxins, pathogens and nutritional supplements that are too low or too high. Vocal print can even be used to match the most compatible treatment remedy to each client. The introduction of the proper low frequency sound to the body, indicated through voice analysis, has been shown to control: pain, body temperature, heart rhythm, and blood pressure. It has also been shown to regenerate body tissue, and alleviate the symptoms of many diseases; in some cases, even those considered to be incurable by Western medicine. Please join us Thursday to learn more about this amazing healing process from its founder....

HOW HOLISTIC VETERINARY CARE CAN OPTIMIZE YOUR PET’S MOBILITY, LIFESPAN, AND QUALITY OF LIFE! by Hemda Mizrahi and Dr. Jill Elliot Apr27

HOW HOLISTIC VETERINARY CARE CAN OPTIMIZE YOUR PET’S MOBILITY, LIFESPAN, AND QUALITY OF LIFE! by Hemda Mizrahi and Dr. Jill...

Holistic veterinarian Jill Elliot, DVM, joined me on “Turn the Page” to share her recommendations on a vaccination protocol for cats and dogs. She also spoke about treatment approaches that have restored mobility in pets with musculoskeletal issues, and increased the lifespan of animals who have cancer. Listen to our conversation to hear about the remarkable successes she described, recognizing that, while many of Dr. Elliot’s patients have experienced notable quality of life improvements through her integration of conventional and holistic protocols, each pet’s response is unique. With the underlying objective of helping to facilitate the optimal wellbeing of your pets, Dr. Elliot provided the following additional guidance after the show. VACCINATION AND OPTIMIZING YOUR PET’S WELLBEING “Vaccinations are essential to protect your animal’s long term health and wellbeing. Core vaccination protocols change depending on your pet’s environment and routine or lifestyle. During your first vet visit with a new cat or dog, it’s important to discuss the veterinarian’s philosophy about vaccines and wellness care in general. If you feel pressured to vaccinate, or do anything else you don’t agree with, don’t be afraid to get a second opinion from another veterinarian. Try to find a vet office where you know you will be able to see the same veterinarian for every visit. In many large practices you might see a different vet each time, depending on their work and vacation schedules. Each vet may have a different philosophy, which can create confusion for you and your pet! Be open to new ideas and treatments. Veterinary medicine is constantly evolving. When there is a problem with your pet, in addition to discussing it with your veterinarian, you might ask your friends and neighbors what they do in similar situations. Many of my referrals come from...

The Gift of Rejection with Mary Norris by Cynthia Brian Apr27

The Gift of Rejection with Mary Norris by Cynthia Brian...

Every week, Express Yourself!™ will bring you a stimulating program based on a chapter from our award winning book Be the Star You Are!® for Teens. The Gift of Rejection “You’re too tall, you’re too short, you’re too pretty, you’re too ugly, you’re too young, you’re too old, your hair is too blonde, your hair isn’t blonde enough, your eyes are too blue, your eyes need to be brown, you have too much experience, you’re not experienced enough.”  No matter who you are, you will face rejection in life so it’s time to embrace it and move forward. Asya Gonzalex hosts the program beginning with chapter, The Gift of Rejection” by Cynthia Brian from the book Be the Star You Are!® for Teens followed by a lively conversation with The New Yorker copy editor, Mary Norris.  Norris expertly guides readers through the most common and confusing grammatical issues in her book, Between You and Me, Confessions of a Comma Queen. She reveals her rejections throughout her career and why it’s important to keep on keeping on. An informative and fun interaction with two women who love words and repel rejection. Bio Mary Norris Mary Norris began her professional career as a foot checker—dutifully checking patrons’ toes for athlete’s foot as they entered a Cleveland city pool—before working at a costume company and driving a milk truck. Humble beginnings for a woman who would come to spend more than three decades as a copy editor (or “prose goddess”) at The New Yorker, where she’s worked with such celebrated writers as Philip Roth, Pauline Kael, and George Saunders. Norris’s love of language, and her wish to help “all of you who want to feel better about your grammar,” led her to write BETWEEN YOU & ME:...

CIO Tomorrow – Leadership is About Results that Matter Apr26

CIO Tomorrow – Leadership is About Results that Matter...

The following post was written by Dr. Dale Meyerrose as part of the Columbus Business First’s CIO Tomorrow Conference. Dr. Meyerrose is one of the featured speakers in the Voice America Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations interview aired on April 26, 2016. If you were to take a “professional selfie,” what would you see?  What would others see?  How would the perceptions of each correlate—or not? Many of us in the technology business built reputations on our ability to keep the IT running, perform miracles on shoe-string budgets, manage IT projects, understand enterprises and processes, and respond to emergencies.  Our view of that selfie would likely reflect pride in our technical acumen and ability to deliver on many things.  Important, yes.  But in the macro-scheme of business, do those things really matter?  Do they earn you a seat at the decision tables within your respective organizations?  Do they compel the Board of Directors to seek you counsel?  The evidence over many years, lo decades, is clear—they don’t! Why don’t others, looking at that same selfie, see you as necessary for setting corporate strategy?  Linked with company performance and customer satisfaction?  Value your contributions as cultivating opportunities and revenue, vice as a cost center to be minimized?  A crucial player in the “big” decisions over the course of time?  Hmmm. In my view, the reason is that many CIOs (and CSOs and CISOs for that matter) don’t move beyond the “plumbing” of their younger years.  Make no mistake, the plumbing has to work and work well.  However, the skills that made us good technicians and program managers early in our career, don’t translate into the talent needed to lead complex organizations in today’s demanding business world.  Consequently, I believe it critical for CIOs to differentiate...

Take Care of Your Trees and They’ll Take Care of You! by Cynthia Brian...

By Cynthia Brian “Trees are poems the earth writes upon the sky” Kahlil Gibran It was a glorious sunny day, almost mocking the tragedy that was to come. As my grandfather mowed his lawn – something he’d done many times before – the limb of a diseased elm tree came crashing down on him. He was killed instantly. I write this week’s article as a cautionary tale. My grandfather knew the tree was diseased, but the city he lived in had not yet issued the permits needed to remove it. With this tragedy always in my heart, I am forever diligent in inspecting my trees. With this tragedy always in my heart, I am forever diligent in inspecting my trees. Trees are the life source of our world, offering so much for so little. Trees clean our air, provide shade, offer oxygen, filter run off drainage, and cool the air. Without trees, many species of birds, squirrels, bees, and other wildlife would not have habitat. Trees beautify a neighborhood, conserve energy in our homes, bear fruit, and offer climbing structures for adventurous children. Trees are harvested to make furniture, paper products, and firewood. Sitting next to a tree recalibrates our bodily energy. Property values are higher in residential areas with mature trees. Trees are indeed poems written in the sky. This past year moss began to form on the branches of the gigantic cottonwood tree that had voluntarily seeded itself in my front yard. Over the winter, mistletoe dangled from the heights, ivy strangled the trunk, and giant ugly mushrooms sprouted along the base. While other trees on the property had leaves unfurling when the vernal equinox approached, my cottonwood remained haunted. Over the years, Advance Tree Service had delivered free wood chips to...

Know and Understand the United Nation’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals by Luis Vicente Garcia...

The United Nations launched an incredible set of GOALS in 2015 called the Sustainable Development Goals or SDG’s. They are a set of world changing goals on very important areas for humanity that include, promotion, knowledge of important issues and a series of activities that will make the world a better place. Knowing these goals and understanding them is crucial and has many important implications for our future growth and development; but for me, it is more important to know what we as individuals, companies and institutions can do to promote and help achieve these important goals. It needs to start someplace and there is no better place than here on the radio show ‘Performing at Your Best: Mindset Evolution with Luis Vicente Garcia‘. Learning the SDG’s and understanding what we need to do in order to work together towards achieving them by the set date of 2030 is now of key importance. MANAGING INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE: THE TROUBLE WITH ADDED SUGAR by Hemda Mizrahi and Colleen Webb Apr21

MANAGING INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE: THE TROUBLE WITH ADDED SUGAR by Hemda Mizrahi and Colleen Webb...

Colleen Webb, MS. RDN, CLT, joined me on “Turn the Page” to share how food and nutrition can positively impact your ability to manage Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). IBD primarily includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Our conversation reveals how your dietary choices can enable you to manage this potentially debilitating condition. Colleen expands upon the guidance that she provided during the show by discussing the impact of ADDED SUGAR on your symptoms and state of health. Her suggestions offer benefits for overall health, regardless of whether or not you have active IBD. THE TROUBLE WITH “ADDED SUGAR” Colleen states, “Added sugar includes sugars and syrups added to foods during processing, preparation, and at the table. It does not include sugar naturally occurring in whole fruit or milk. Added sugar goes by many names, including high fructose corn syrup, agave, honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar, and evaporated cane juice. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a “healthy” sugar. Most of us are aware of the obvious sources of added sugar, such as sugar-sweetened beverages, cookies, cakes, and candy. Given that SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE “HEALTHY” FOODS MAY CONTAIN ADDED SUGAR, be sure to check nutrition labels. For example, nut butters may contain evaporated cane syrup or other sugars. Flavored yogurts, granola bars, store-bought smoothies, and cereals (even organic!) often have more added sugar than a serving of cookies! Most of us are consuming way too much added sugar, and studies have shown that people with active IBD consume even more added sugar than people without active IBD. The reality is that EXCESSIVE INTAKE OF ADDED SUGAR IS LINKED TO INFLAMMATION, DYSBIOSIS, AND A VARIETY OF CHRONIC DISEASES. Sugary foods and drinks can lead to GI upset, especially diarrhea, bloating, gas, and nausea.” COLLEEN’S RECOMMENDATIONS...

Mergers and acquisitions: 5 Key Drivers to Value Realization by Maureen Metcalf Apr20

Mergers and acquisitions: 5 Key Drivers to Value Realization by Maureen Metcalf...

Today’s post is a collaboration between Maureen Metcalf, Carla Morelli and Laura Hult focusing on mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and identifying key factors that drive success and failure. The authors are seasoned veterans who have participated in many transactions and seen similar themes. This post and its companion VoiceAmerica interview provide insights and make recommendations to improve the probability of success for your next transaction, whether you are acquiring, selling or involved in the integration. Research Indicates that Mergers and Acquisitions Often Fail to Deliver Desired Results The Financial Times Press’ A Comprehensive Guide to Mergers & Acquisitions: Managing the Critical Success Factors Across Every Stage of the M&A Process says that though studies have historically set the rate of M&A failure at 50 percent or more, recent years have found it to be as high as 83 percent. One might conclude that executives and boards would eschew M&A as a way to achieve growth and profitability in favor of less risky alternatives, but that has not been the case. Despite the warning signs, the number and dollar value of transactions has increased every year for the last 20 years. Failure Results from Management’s Lack of Knowledge or Unwillingness to Face Facts “The primary reasons for failures [are] related to the fact that it is easy to buy but hard to perform an M&A. In general, many mergers and acquisitions are characterized by the lack of planning, limited synergies, differences in the management/organizational/international culture, negotiation mistakes, and difficulties in the implementation of the strategy following the choice of an incorrect integration approach on the part of the merging organizations after the agreement is signed. Most failure factors indicate a lack of knowledge among senior managers for the management tools that enable coping with the...

Listen in as Paul takes us to that fine line where the ego and spirit become one seamless existence: time-space reality connecting with the current of All-That-Is resulting in music from the heart of universal love; it is Paul’s music we hear in Time Share’s openings and closings. Following his intuition and natural aptitudes for understanding music at an early age, Paul’s discoveries took him to his prior life as Romantic composer and pianist Edvard Grieg, born in the early 19th century. Paul chronicles this very personal journey in his book “Between the Lines – A Case for Reincarnation.” His spiritual studies took him to a deep understanding of “Seth,” the energy presence channeled by Jane Roberts. Lots to talk about with Paul!...

Living Awareness: Patterns of Connection by Cheryl Esposito...

Cheryl Esposito welcomes Peter Wrycza, founder of the Nirarta Centre for Living Awareness in Bali. Peter says: “In 1995 I stood in a grove of clove trees overlooking a river in a serene valley between the sea and the mountains and realized that this was my moment of choice. I could stick with my familiar work and territory in Europe. Or I could take the risk of buying land in a far-off place, and create a centre for people to connect with the core of their life.” Balinese philosophy emphasizes harmony between one’s own ‘small world’ and the wider world around us. The Empty Chair Around the Holiday Table by Rabbi Mel Glazer...

THE EMPTY CHAIR AT THE HOLIDAY TABLE The festive holiday tables were filled once with the loved ones who have been a part of our holiday meals for as long as we can remember.  Some were our grandparents, some our parents, some spouses and siblings, and some, our beloved children.  Last year, they were sitting right there in “their” chairs, next to us, laughing and celebrating.  How should we respond to the empty chairs, to the emptiness that fills our hearts with such sadness?  Holidays are supposed to be such a time of joy, but how can we be joyful without them?  Their chairs are empty, and our hearts are filled with heaviness.  What do we do? We have lost something profound, and we must realize it and verbalize it.  We have lost our loved ones, those who have taught us, raised us, and been our role models and teachers.  They are gone, we are left to go on without them, and it hurts.  They were connected to our lives for so long, and now, suddenly, they’re not here.  A part of them still lives inside us. And we have lost even more.  We have lost the order and the familiarity of sitting down together, in the very same seats that we sat in last year at this time.  We felt safe and comfortable, everyone was in their correct chair, all was right with the world.  But now, the order is all wrong.  The seating is different, because different people are sitting in those chairs.  When our loved ones die – or divorce out of the family – we are adrift, without rudders to guide us.  Not only do we miss them, but we miss the certainty of the familiar.  Who will sit in...

Bad Bosses: Are You One? by Maureen Metcalf Apr14

Bad Bosses: Are You One? by Maureen Metcalf...

This blog post is co-written by Mike Morrow-Fox and Maureen as a companion to the VoiceAmerica recording on Bad Bosses. Bill comes into the office. He is swamped by the sheer volume of work he needs to accomplish –  preparing for a high-visibility client meeting, meeting with his executive leadership, and consolidating information to create his monthly reports. On top of this, he has seven highly competent direct reports. He’s grateful that his team is so effective, because it means he doesn’t need to spend much time with them. He really likes his team and wishes he could do more mentoring, but for now, he needs to keep his head down and get his work done. As we read in the article, his approach is actually ineffective because he is not actively engaging them. In a January 2016 article published in the Gallup Business Journal, ‘Gallup has been tracking employee engagement in the U.S. since 2000. Though there have been some slight ebbs and flows, less than one-third of U.S. employees have been engaged in their jobs and workplaces during these 15 years. According to Gallup Daily tracking, 32% of employees in the U.S. are engaged — meaning they are involved in, enthusiastic about and committed to their work and workplace. Worldwide, only 13% of employees working for an organization are engaged.’ Bosses play a major role in employee engagement and disengagement. Engaged bosses drive engagement, while disengaged bosses drive disengagement and, even, active disruption. Let’s start with a definition. What is the difference between a leader and a boss? Leaders set the cultural tone and strategic vision; bosses are the employee’s conduit to the larger organization. We understand that there are some obvious characteristics that would make anyone a bad boss, like throwing...

Meet Linda: Connector, Translator and Maverick Who Builds Bridges in the EU Banking Sector...

With less than two months to go to the launch of Building Banking on Values, a new VoiceAmerica radio series I’m hosting that goes behind the scenes to tell the stories of the people, passion and positivity within the values-based banking and financing sector; I thought to introduce you to some of our guests. Meet Linda van Goor, Regulatory Communications Expert whose motto is to ‘connect, translate, empower’ when facilitating change in the EU banking sector.  Linda has worked for universities, the banking sector, De Nederlandsche Bank and the European Commission as a teacher, adviser, moderator, issues-manager, supervisor, regulator and trainer. She’s been explaining, connecting, coordinating, translating, drafting and applying European regulatory issues in the financial sector for years. The European idea “unified in diversity” has always been a guiding principle. Finding common interests and bridging the gap between legal text and day-to-day practice has been my guiding approach. Regulatory communication is my means to find common interests and to guide and empower people to solve problems, to cooperate across national or sector borders and to create opportunities. Colleagues in Brussels sometimes referred to this approach as “the Linda way” – listening until finding the essence of a problem or a legal text, the commonalities and common goals of the many parties involved, then explaining that essence in simpler words to others and finally inducing joint initiatives. That’s how Linda van Goor contributed to bringing home high impact legislation (especially Directive 2011/89/EU and related initiatives regarding complex financial groups) in full cooperation with respective Presidencies and the Council, Commission colleagues and the European Parliament, and under the responsibility of the European Commission. Making Sense of Buddhism by Paula Joyce Apr13

Making Sense of Buddhism by Paula Joyce...

A client recently asked me what I knew about Buddhism. She wanted to go somewhere to immerse herself in Buddhist practice as a way of learning more. I shared some basic information and encouraged her to begin her search with the internet. The fact is that Buddhism is not one thing and there isn’t even agreement on the number of main branches. There are numerous questions to clarify including which particular teacher appeals to you. Most of us are familiar with His Holiness The Dalai Lama and the Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. But do you know what they believe and what the differences are between the different forms of Buddhism? According to my guest for this show, there are five precepts that are essential to all forms of Buddhism: “don’t kill, don’t steal, don’t have excessive wants, don’t lie, don’t get high.” In fact, he says that you can summarize Buddhist precepts into one simple concept: Don’t be a jerk. Please join us Thursday to learn more about Buddhist wisdom and...

Congress Should Not Be a Part-Time Job by Rebecca Costa Apr12

Congress Should Not Be a Part-Time Job by Rebecca Costa...

What if the next President of the United States decided not to move to the nation’s capital? After the election, they announced plans to fly into Washington on Monday — keep office hours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays — and return home on Friday. What if they were comfortable sleeping on the sofa in the Oval Office, showering at the gym, and eating in the staff cafeteria when they were in town? What? You don’t like the sound of that? Welcome to the United States Congress. According to former Senate Majority Leaders, Tom Daschle (D) and Trent Lott (R), members of Congress presently work together three days a week, or less. So, no one knows any one any more. There’s no camaraderie, no communication, no socializing, no nothing. Given this environment, its no wonder government leaders can’t find common ground. Compromise takes time, cooperation, give and take. It’s a lot like a marriage — and we all know what the stats on long distance relationships look like. So how bad is it? The latest stats reveal that 78 percent of those elected to Congress now spend 40 out of 52 weekends a year at home. Tim Roemer, former representative from Indiana claims that Congressional “commuting” is taking a serious toll: “Despite a $174,000 salary, members of Congress do the job we elected them to do only ‘part time.’ The rest of the time, they are chasing money for their re-election campaigns.” Which means time away from the nation’s capital, and business. The days when leaders bonded over children’s birthday parties, a weekend neighborhood barbeque, and working side by side into the night to pass legislation, are all long gone. In fact, so many Representatives and Senators now commute that no voting is scheduled on...

What are Smart CIOs Doing? Apr12

What are Smart CIOs Doing?...

This blog is a collaboration between Angelo Mazzocco, CIO, Central Ohio Primary Care and Co-Founding Organizer of the CIO Tomorrow Conference, and Maureen Metcalf, CEO, Metcalf & Associates and host of the Innovative Leaders Driving Thriving Organizations radio program. The world is changing dramatically, and technology is leading this global transition. As technology leaders, you will be distinguished by your ability anticipate trends and recommend changes that leverage them before your competition does. This proactive ability to read what is happening and turn it into a competitive advantage is rare and highly valuable to companies. “Former Intel Chairman Andy Grove said that an inflection point, ‘occurs where the old strategic picture dissolves and gives way to the new.’ This seems to be happening with disconcerting regularity. Every day, contemporary executives confront a series of inflection points – situations in which received wisdom is no longer adequate or appropriate for the task at hand. Francois Hollande became the president of France on the promise of being “Mr. Normal.” His record-settingly low popularity suggests that, at least in France, there is no place for normal, as The New York Times put it. That may be true everywhere. Here’s the thing: Great leaders are able to imagine and hence control what is on the other side of the inflection point.” Thorton May, Innovative Leaders Guide to Implementing Analytics Programs One of the most common questions Maureen hears from technology leaders is: with all of the changes, how can I manage the deluge of information, identify the critical elements and stay current? To figure this out, she interviewed Angelo about his thoughts on his personal development to understand what shaped his thinking when he invited high-profile keynote speakers to the upcoming CIO Tomorrow conference. The event, held in...

Slowing Down, An excerpt from Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment Apr11

Slowing Down, An excerpt from Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment...

Slowing Down An excerpt from Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment by Ariel & Shya Kane It was a cold sunny day in New Jersey and the first thin layers of ice were forming on our pond. We were scheduled to go to Pilates that day, our private exercise class with a trainer, but we liked doing some cardio workout first. Usually, weather permitting, we would take a walk through town before our class. Even with the sun out the cold was not appealing, so we opted for a more rigorous half-hour of exercise on our treadmill and elliptical machines. Here is what happened: First, I noticed that I was watching the clock: Uhh-Oh, trying to get it over with… You know… What you resist persists and takes lonnngger. I mentioned to Shya that I was clock watching and we began to chat which took our thoughts away from the time. As we moved along, joked and sweated, I came to realize that something had been bothering me since the day before. I had made a couple of mistakes in the last few days. Not big ones, just a red flag that something in me was not quite as crisp as I would have liked. I was not operating from the bull’s eye of my own personal center. I mentioned it to Shya. I told him the little details that were plaguing my thoughts. Here is what he had to say: “Ariel, slow down. Just a little bit. You are trying to do too much, too fast.” And that was that. We finished our workout at home and then went to work out with our trainer. Class was fun. I didn’t try to get it over with. I exercised to the best of...

What Makes Breaking Up So Hard to Do? by Dr.Suzanne B. Phillips...

Most people would agree that “breaking up is hard to do.” Whereas there is a great deal of attention to the broken heart of a lost love, there is much less focus on the difficulty of being the one to break up a relationship.  Issues like fear of judgment, co-dependency, family expectations and dismissal of one’s own needs complicate the breaking up of a dating relationship.  Understanding and strategies offered. COLLABORATIVE COMMUNICATION: HOW TO STAND OUT AND OPEN DOORS THROUGH YOUR WRITTEN WORD by Hemda Mizrahi and Elaine Rosenblum Apr08

COLLABORATIVE COMMUNICATION: HOW TO STAND OUT AND OPEN DOORS THROUGH YOUR WRITTEN WORD by Hemda Mizrahi and Elaine Rosenblum...

How can you negotiate better, improve your self-presentation skills, and prevent misunderstandings that may emerge from e-communications, such as texting and emailing? Elaine Rosenblum, JD, an expert in COLLABORATIVE COMMUNICATION, joined me on “Turn the Page” to share tactics that will enable you to open doors through your written and spoken words. Listen to our conversation to hear the full range of her suggestions and illustrations. Elaine states, “To avoid potential miscommunication, SPECIFICITY is as important as shifting from judgmental to neutral language, especially in texting or emailing people you don’t know well, or in professional interactions.” She provides two examples: MICHAEL, AN EMORY MBA STUDENT PITCHING HIMSELF FOR A JOB Elaine suggests to Michael: Instead of  “I think I have the skills to do this job,” let your interviewers know, “I am an Emory MBA with four years of beverage marketing experience at Coca Cola and Starbucks. I can conduct business in English, French and Spanish.” FROM INDIANA UNIVERSITY TO GOLDMAN SACHS “Young people interviewing for first jobs typically only have internship experience and minimal workplace skills. It’s imperative for recent or soon-to-be grads to understand “transferable skills” and articulate what makes them uniquely interesting. This Indiana student was a poker prodigy at nine. Few college juniors can own this proposition. Poker also has transferable skills to Wall Street. The Goldman feedback was that telling an engaging “story” about his “poker gift” is what set him apart and landed him the “long-shot” position.  Even seasoned executives have to work to maintain their specificity when articulating.” MORE ON SPECIFICITY “Using “them,” “it,” or “that” as reference points in texting may not provide adequate context. While it takes more actual texting words, directly stating time and place or redefining who “them” or what “it” or “that”...

The College Visit: What Questions Should I Be Asking?...

College visits can be an incredibly valuable part of the college process—or they can be a big waste of time and money. Students and families can make these worth their while by thinking ahead about the kinds of questions they want to ask and of whom, and we’ll be offering guidance around both in this week’s show. In another of our ongoing segments on students’ college choices, this week we’ll hear from a student who chose the University of South Carolina after originally setting her sights on small liberal arts colleges. And finally, we’re running part two in our series on tuition reciprocity agreements with a focus on the New England Regional Student Program. April Garden Guide by Cynthia Brian...

“April hath put a spirit of youth in everything.” William Shakespeare The siren song of spring calls my soul to the outdoors as swiftly as the mermaid lures the sailor to the depths of the sea. The fragrance of the blossoms, the colors of blooms, the chirping of the birds, the croaking of the frogs, and the scent of green grasses speak to my deepest being. Our precious earth is in the process of re-birth and no matter how many years I’ve witnessed this evolution, I am always in awe. My camera captures thousands of photos, most of which looked so much better with the naked eye, yet I want to record the beauty. I am obsessed with the lilacs, wisteria, iris, freesia, fruit trees, wildflowers, and, especially the soothing sounds of the cascading creeks. Spring-how I love thee! As wild turkeys gobble gobble along the hillsides and into our streets unaware that turkey season is open for those who seek to bag a bird for a barbecue and as the deer begin to nibble our budding roses, it’s wise to consider protecting our delicate plants from our indigenous predators.  Wire, netting, and fences are our most effective armor.  El Nino has been a blessing in quenching our thirsty gardens, especially our lawns, yet the prodigious weeds, if left unattended will compete with our flowers for moisture in summer. Now is the time to take action. Every morning as I walk my property, I tell myself I’ll spend only an hour in the garden after work. However, the hour quietly melts into three or four and soon I’m weeding by flashlight. This is love. It’s springtime in our gardens and fun is pending! Go out and dig. ⎫ ADD edible flowers to your dining experience....

Reiki Connects You With Spirit, Assisting You in Healing Your Own Body, Mind and Spirit by Rebekah and Boyd Campbell Apr05

Reiki Connects You With Spirit, Assisting You in Healing Your Own Body, Mind and Spirit by Rebekah and Boyd Campbell...

April 11, 2016: Reiki is a Japanese holistic, light-touch, energy-based modality. It is “Spiritually Guided Life Force Energy” from an unlimited source. It is a gentle, relaxing and balancing healing technique, yet it is extremely powerful. Working as a support mechanism to the body, Reiki re-establishes a normal energy flow of ki (life force energy) throughout the system, which in turn can enhance and accelerate the body’s innate healing ability. Reiki does not require that the practitioner guides the energy with the mind, as the energy is guided by the higher power that knows what vibration or combination of vibrations are needed by the client. Find out how Reiki can benefit you. We will explore the incredible healing benefits reported by people who have learned Reiki and from those who have received Reiki.  We invite you to call in or email us to share your own experience with Reiki. A gifted orator, musician, and transformational leader, Kute’s passion is helping you reveal your passion and live it. Raised in Ghana, the son of a revered spiritual leader, Kute has a presence that inspires. He was age 8 the first time he spoke in front of 3000 people with his father by his side. By age 18 with speaking appearances in over 300 venues, Kute was getting restless.  Having the courage to choose his own way in the world rather than step into the role that awaited him as his father’s successor, he left for the U.S. with “two suitcases and a dream”. He knew he wanted to help others live their own truth, not the truth that anyone else had created for them. “What are you pretending not to know?” Kute asks as he takes you on a transformational journey to dig deep and tell yourself your truth. He dares you to “pick up the instrument that is your heart and play it fully.” There is liberation in being who you are meant to be, rather than living the story that others have created about you. Whose life is it, anyway? Join Cheryl Esposito & Kute Blackson in creating your next masterpiece:...

Innovate How You Lead: Create A Business Advantage by Maureen Metcalf Mar31

Innovate How You Lead: Create A Business Advantage by Maureen Metcalf...

What does innovating leadership really mean? Let’s start with the definition of leadership as a uniquely human activity that is intended to move an organization forward such that it improves the lives of the people it serves and simultaneously takes into consideration the rightful interests of the organizational members. It is important to note that each individual leader will lead in a manner that is authentic to his or her unique skills, abilities, personality, beliefs, values, and other influencing factors such as brain chemistry. Effective leadership encompasses both the science of leading and the heart of the leader. It requires heartfelt care, compassion, and authenticity to be truly effective. This does not mean leaders are soft, but rather they demonstrate compassion when taking tough action. Being a good scientist and understanding the theory is a good start but insufficient if the leader does not demonstrate deep care for the people being led and the people being served. Innovating leadership cannot be applied as a monolithic theory, or as a simple prescriptive measure. It occurs through your own intellect and stems from your own unique sensibilities. Let’s build a foundation from which to explore both innovation and leadership, which means talking about them in an entirely different context. Leadership is a process of influencing people strategically and tactically, effecting change in intentions, actions, culture, and systems to move the organization forward such that it improves the lives of the people it serves and simultaneously takes into consideration the rightful interests of the organizational members. Leadership influences individual intentions and organizational cultural norms by inspiring purpose and creating alignment. It equally influences an individual’s actions and an organization’s efficiencies through tactical decisions. Innovation, as an extension of leadership, refers to the novel ways in which we...

ARE YOU READY FOR SENSORWORLD? by Rebecca Costa Mar30

ARE YOU READY FOR SENSORWORLD? by Rebecca Costa...

Sensors, sensors, everywhere sensors.  In our clothes, our shoes, air conditioners, cars, diapers and beds. And what are all these sensors doing? They’re collecting and analyzing data of course – billions of discrete pieces of information every picosecond of every day so we can, a) make informed decisions and, b) automate all of the things connected by the IoT (Internet of Things).  Soon sensors embedded in my pajamas will determine I’m dehydrated from having a little too much fun the night before, then send a message to the 3-D food printer in my kitchen to make a drink designed to replenish my electrolytes.  Sensors will also heat my house the minute my car heads for home and tell me when my 16-year old is driving over the speed limit.   Sound far-fetched?  It shouldn’t. Recently, Senior Editor of Wired Magazine, Bill Wasik, reported, “A new device revolution is at hand: just as mobile phones and tablets displaced the once-dominant PC,  wearable devices are poised to push smartphones aside.” In truth, the U.S. sensor market is expected to surpass $15 billion in 2016, causing On World to forecast that by 2017, global shipments of wearable, implantable, and mobile health and fitness devices will be up 552% from 2012. Welcome to SensorWorld. Now sensors and data analytics are preparing to go where ‘no man has gone before.’ Tackling an activity we spend a third of our lives ignoring: sleep! Why sleep? The National Sleep Foundation reports that 43% of Americans rarely get a good night’s sleep, and 60% experience a sleep problem almost every night. A recent Gallup poll revealed that since 1942, the amount of sleep we get has decreased roughly a half an hour per night and continues to trend downward. And the Center...

How to WIN: Inspire with Insight, Grace and Action by Cheryl Esposito Mar29

How to WIN: Inspire with Insight, Grace and Action by Cheryl Esposito...

Cheryl Esposito welcomes Kristin Engvig, pioneering founder of WIN (Women’s International Networking), who has dedicated the past 20 years to women’s leadership and organizational change, inspiring others to create a world where business and society flourish and all people thrive. What do you do when the seed of an idea evolves into a vision, then becomes a force of influence and transformation for women around the world? If you are Kristin Engvig, founder of WIN, you breathe. You consider possibility. You build relationships. You step forward not knowing the outcome. You trust. You course correct if something does not work. What you don’t do is give up the core of the seed, the intent that was bigger than even you could imagine at the time, the values that nurtured the idea into being. This is not always the path of least resistance… A native of Norway, Kristin believes it is her responsibility to be a global citizen. Her career spans leadership roles at global corporations including JPMorgan & Citibank, to her current work as an international strategy and marketing consultant. In the midst of that journey, Kristin’s vision of “…a sustainable, feminine, global & authentic way of being in work, communities & life…” evolved into her founding of WIN (Women’s International Networking), which today is an independent global women’s leadership organization. Transforming ourselves in order to transform the world – one where business & societies flourish and all people thrive… building relationships to inspire possibility…stepping forward to take action, trusting that each step is a transformative moment for humanity. Every moment matters. Every person matters. Tune in every Friday at 10am PST to Leading...

HOW TO LEAD WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM YOUR EMOTIONS by Hemda Mizrahi and Pat Baxter Mar29

HOW TO LEAD WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM YOUR EMOTIONS by Hemda Mizrahi and Pat Baxter...

Pat Baxter, Ed.D., MS, CSA, author of “Cool Change: Turning Emotions Into Leadership Strengths,” joined me on “Turn the Page”  to discuss how emotions help us to be guided by our experiences, better manage relationships, and take productive action. Listen to our conversation about engaging the benefits, and minimizing the liabilities of expressing feelings at work. The ability to regulate one’s emotions is an important marker of performing well in high-pressure situations. The more limber you are in responding to stress, the more access you’ll be granted to influence others. Dr. Baxter expanded on our discussion after the show, by sharing additional tactics for constructively engaging emotions: EMPATHY IS A CRITICAL SKILL IN BUILDING STRONGER RELATIONSHIPS. Research shows that women are likely to have higher scores in certain Emotional Intelligence competencies (which can make them strong leaders!), especially empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand and relate to another’s feelings. Both empathy and emotional awareness are skills that can be learned. One of the most effective actions you can take to establish an empathetic relationship is to listen carefully and closely. When the person pauses or becomes quiet, repeat back what you heard (not word for word), using your own words to convey what you understood. Image Relationship Therapy, pioneered by Harville Hendrix, encourages the listener to then ask, “did I get it?” and “is there anything else?” This type of approach is foundational to coaching, counseling, and mediation given how supported, respected, and cared for the person speaking feels. It is a great strategy for deescalating a heated situation. BEING EMOTIONALLY AWARE ENABLES YOU TO GET “UNSTUCK” IN YOUR EMOTIONS. Emotional awareness invites you to pinpoint the triggers and other factors that contribute to your emotions, and to be empowered by the insights that...

The Brains of Leaders: Manage Your Thinking to Improve Your Effectiveness by Maureen Metcalf Mar29

The Brains of Leaders: Manage Your Thinking to Improve Your Effectiveness by Maureen Metcalf...

The following post is by guest Gary Weber, Subject/collaborator in neuroscience studies at Yale, Institute Of Noetic Sciences, Baumann Institute, Center for Study of Non-Symbolic Consciousness, Johns Hopkins, Penn State. It accompanies a Voice America Interview about how leaders can manage their thinking to improve their effectiveness. I found the conversation about how the brain actually works and how we manage our thinking versus our perception of what we are doing quite fascinating. For me, the take away was that our brain functions much differently than we were taught and by updating our understanding, we have the opportunity to reduce our stress and improve our effectiveness dramatically. From Gary’s work: One of our great, and common (mis)conceptions is that we need “thoughts” to speak – that we “think up”, consciously, what we say before we say it.  As an experiment, take a few minutes and watch carefully what you say, and see if you do think up what you say.   Go ahead, just do it… Do we know what we’re going to say before we say it?   Or do we just hear it as it is said, and then try to see if it was a “good” thing or if we might have “misspoken”? The quieter your internal narrative is, and the closer you watch, the easier it is to see that you have no idea what is going to be coming out when speech happens. An excellent paper was just published in “Psychological Science” entitled “Speakers’ Acceptance of Real-Time Speech Exchange Indicates That We Use Auditory Feedback to Specify the Meaning of What We Say”, by Andreas Lind, et al., from the Swedish universities at Uppsala and Lund. What Lind and his colleagues did was to see what would happen if...

A Simple Solution to Loneliness by Paula Joyce Mar26

A Simple Solution to Loneliness by Paula Joyce...

Being lonely is not the same as being alone. You can be married, a member of a book club or a CEO and still be lonely. 1 out of 5 people are lonely and that number is increasing. Even though loneliness is not classified as a mental health disorder, it does affect our health and well-being like depression or anxiety do. In fact, Time Magazine recently ran a piece entitled, “Why Loneliness May Be The Next Big Public-Health Issue.” Clearly we need to take this seriously. Studies have shown that chronic loneliness increases mortality, inhibits one’s immune system, increases blood pressure, detrimentally impacts sleep patterns and has negative health consequences on a par with obesity, alcoholism and cigarette smoking. It’s even associated with dementia. Yet loneliness is not just an issue for seniors. In fact, nearly 60% of those aged 18-34 say they are lonely often or sometimes compared to 35% of those over 55. Please join us next Thursday to learn the causes and cure for being lonely....

Grow a WildFlower Garden with Cynthia Brian...

“May all your weeds be wildflowers.” When I was a child weeds and wildflowers were synonymous. I would meander through the hills and creeks with my handy Golden Nature Guide called “Flowers: A Guide to Familiar American WildFlowers” along with notebook, paper, and a Brownie camera to capture the images and properties of as many specimens that I could find. Trillium, morning glory, lupin, California poppy, clover, stargazer, brodias, columbine, buttercups, and mustard all captivated me. I would pick the flowers to quickly bring home to iron between wax paper and catalogue into my wildflower scrapbook. In a field of specimens, I’d dig a plant up with the attached roots to transplant into my personal flower plot. What I found out is that wildflowers aren’t fussy. They grow in all kinds of soil, don’t need water once they are established, and add stunning textures and vibrancy to your landscape. 1. Find a place where the flowers will get at least six hours of daily sunshine. Wildflowers need lots of sunshine. 2. Before spreading the seed, clear the dirt. Purge all weeds, grasses, or any other growth from the area. Turn the toil with a hoe or a tiller. 3. Rake the soil. 4. Add sand to the seeds at the rate of ten parts sand to one part seed. This will help you to see it when you spread it. Use a seed spreader if you are seeding a big area, or feel free to sprinkle by hand. 5. Don’t cover the seed with soil. It does need to be compressed for better germination either by walking on it or rolling it. I use a five gallon bucket to roll over the seeded soil in any smaller locations. 6. Water the seeds regularly until...
